Monuments, Mills, and Missile Sites: Thirty Years of the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) October 26, 2000 - May 20, 2001 The Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) documents historically significant engineering and industrial works throughout the United States. Established in 1969, HAER is administered by the National Park Service, with the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and other engineering societies serving in an advisory capacity. The Library of congress is the repository for the collection. Over the past three decades, the Historic American Engineering Record has created a singular public archive documenting engineering marvels and industrial icons. This exhibition showcases a tiny fragment of HAER 's legacy. Many of the sites were recorded as key examples of the technological advances that emerged from the increased industrialization and mechanization of the 19th and early 20th centuries. February BOOK REVIEW - by Carol Standish A s the Nineteenth century marched on, an increasingly sizeable portion of the Western world was stirred, not shaken, by the entrepreneurial brainstorm of one Frederic Tudor. A “diminutive, pig-headed” Bostonian, Tudor was one of the most remarkable businessmen of his times. The Frozen Water Trade by Gavin Weightman (Hyperion, 247pp, $23.95) is the story of the man “who dedicated most of his life to supplying ice to the tropics,” long before the invention of artificial refrigeration. D uring his privileged childhood Frederic and his siblings enjoyed ice cream and iced drinks in the summer. Ice cut from the farm pond in winter was stored in an icehouse for the express purpose of warm weather refreshment. In the summer of 1805, Frederic, then 22, and his older brother William were enjoying that very luxury at a family picnic when it dawned on Frederic (so the story goes) that there was money to be made shipping such a commodity to the West Indies and other hot climates. T he first square-rigged sailing vessel to carry a cargo of ice left Boston on February 10, 1806. The departure was reported in the Boston Gazette:

The USArray Initiative Introduction. Images powerfully shape our thinking about nature. Consider what our understanding of North American tectonics would be like if our best image of the continent's topography was as blurred as the one shown below, at left (Figure 1). First-order features like the Cordillera are barely resolved and the characteristic topography within provinces like the Basin and Range and Great Valley are obscured beyond recognition. Yet it is precisely such a fuzzy view of the lithosphere and deeper mantle that we currently bring to the four-dimensional problem of understanding the structure, evolution, and dynamics of the North American continent. At a workshop in Albuquerque last March, jointly sponsored by the National Science Foundation and IRIS (Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology), seismologists and geologists discussed the design and implementation of an ambitious plan to explore, map, and develop an integrated understanding of North American geology. Proposed is the development of a facility, USArray, that amounts to a "Hubble telescope for the Earth sciences" (Levander, et al., 1999). In this article, we would like to introduce this initiative to the broad Earth-science community represented by GSA and invite input and participation.
