American Samoa
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. American Samoa is a United States territory in the South Pacific Ocean . Settled as early as 1000 BC , Samoa was "discovered" by European explorers in the 18th century. International rivalries in the latter half of the 19th century were settled by an treaty in which Germany and the US divided the Samoan archipelago. The US formally occupied its portion - a smaller group of eastern islands with the excellent harbor of Pago Pago - the following year. (see History of Samoa for more.) American Samoa was organized as a territory of the United States on February 20 Curious facts:
  • Made in the USA - Goods manufactured in territories or protectorates of the United States can be labeled 'Made in the USA' Not to be confused with the adjacent nation of Samoa

Introduction American Samoa Western Samoa
Introduction
Samoa is not just one island, but a group of islands called an island chain. The eastern islands in the chain are called American Samoa, and they are territories of the United States. The western islands in the chain are called Western Samoa, and they are an independent nation. All of the Samoan islands used to be called the Navigator Islands because of the beautiful, finely-craftead canoes that the Samoans made.

American Samoa is an "unorganized, unincorporated Territory" of the United States, and is the only U.S. possession in the southern hemisphere. It consists of the islands of Tutuila, Manu'a (Ta'u, Ofu and Olosega), Swains Island and Rose Atoll. Its total area is 76.2 square miles. The Samoan Islands extend from 168ƒ to 173ƒ east longitude, and from 13ƒ to 15ƒ south latitude. American Samoa occupies the 168ƒ-171ƒ longitudinal portion of the archipelago, the eastern part of the Samoan Archipelago. Rainfall varies from 120 to 200 inches annually, with an average temperature of 80ƒF. The climate is hot and humid; erosion and biodegradation are rapid. Swains Island and Rose Atoll are both atolls. Rose Atoll is 80 miles east of Ta'u and consists of two low sandy islands - Rose Island and Sand Island - encompassing a 2000m (6500ft) wide lagoon with a total land and reef area of 1600 acres. Rose Atoll is a U.S. National Wildlife Refuge. Swains Island is ring-shaped atoll encompassing a large brackish water lagoon about 230 miles north of Tutuila; it is privately owned.

Samoa Geography Samoa is an independent state and member of the Commonwealth and the United Nations.
It consists of two main islands (Upolu and Savaii) and seven smaller ones with a total land area of 2934 sq. km. The capital is Apia, on Upolu.
Samoa’s nearest neighbor is American Samoa, to its east. Samoa lies 8 degrees east of the International Date Line and 13 degrees south of the equator.
On this map you will notice Samoa designated as W.Sam (for its former name of Western Samoa), just South of Tokelau and West of American Samoa (Am Sam.). Samoa SPBD is now operating in close to 50 villages spread out across the island of Upolu.
SPBD's main offices are in Apia, in the centre of Upolu's North coast.
SPBD is ambitious to open operations on the island of Savaii within the next 18 months. Financing for this operation reamains the key hurdle.
Note that in 1997 Samoa legally changed it's name through the United Nations. Many map makers however still refer to Samoa as Western Samoa (hence the name in bold on this map.) Demographics Samoa has a population of approximately 170,000, most of who live on the two main islands. Most live in small rural villages, along the coasts which fringe the mountainous interior. Ethnic Samoans, who are Polynesians, make up 93% of the population. Europeans, account for less than 1% of the population. The remaining 6% are people of mixed Polynesian and European blood. The population is 99.7% Christian. Forty percent of the population is under 15 years of age.
