[Countries] American Samoa
(territory of the US)
Background: Settled as early as 1000 B. C., Samoa was "discovered" by European explorers in the 18th century. International rivalries in the latter half of the 19th century were settled by an 1899 treaty in which Germany and the US divided the Samoan archipelago. The US formally occupied its portion - a smaller group of eastern islands with the excellent harbor of Pago Pago - the following year.

American Samoa American Samoa is the only US territory in the South Pacific. In the 19th century, the Samoan Islands were divided among Germany, Britain and the US. The current arrangement began in 1899. Legally, the US Department of the Interior administers the islands. Because American Samoa is an unincorporated, unorganized territory, however, judicial jurisdiction over most cases lies with the local courts. Capital: Tutuila - in the villages of Utulei and Fagotogo, in the vicinity of Pago Pago Bay Governor: Mr. Tauese P. Sunia Population: 60,000 – approximately 95% living on Tutuila The native culture is Polynesian, with most islanders having relatives in both Hawaii and Western Samoa. Many believe that both Asians and Polynesians migrated to the islands long ago; both strands may be seen in the faces of the people. Europeans first visited the islands in 1722. Among the native population, there is significant German and Scottish blood. Many Samoans go into the military and stay for a full career. There is a special bond between the Samoans and the US Marine Corps.

The Samoan archipelago is located between 168º and 173º West Longitude, and 14º35' and 13º20' South Latitude, in the South Pacific. It is considered part of the "Polynesian Triangle" of islands that stretch from Rapa Nui (Easter Island) in the east, to New Zealand in the west, and as far north as the Hawaiian Islands. The nearest major islands to the Samoan archipelago are Tonga, located approximately 750 miles to the south-southwest, and Fiji, approximately 780 miles to the southwest. The Samoan islands are almost completely volcanic in origin. Historically, the intra-island cultures of the Samoan archipelago have many affinities, were close traders, and were sometimes combatants. Since 1900 the Samoan islands have been divided politically between the U.S. territory of American Samoa to the east, and the now independent nation of Samoa to the west.
