Whether we talk of tectonic plates that collide beneath us, the mythic, terrifying kingdom of California (and its first Queen, Calafia), the harvest of arugula on our plates and the merlot in our glasses, shifts in the California electorate or failures of the state legislature, we do so in stories, narratives are the stories we tell ourselves (and others) and those stories are changing quickly, even by California standards. Expanding a recent California Council for the Humanities initiative, we involve political scientists, earth scientists, digital specialists, writers, artists, shapers of public policy, economists, urban geographers, elected officials, vintners, journalists, foundations and associations, and the lay public in broad discourse about California stories.
The 2003 conference explores a wide range of issues, and presentations include our boom-and-bust economy (busted) and budget mess (again), Indian casinos, the Silicon Valley redivivus , recent and coming fights over energy and water, the obvious sanity of regional planning and why it is not adopted, Capitol politics through the eyes of journalists who cover it,
Keynote speakers and events include Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Gary Snyder

Grant to campus seeds regional humanities center
By Susanne Rockwell The National Endowment for the Humanities announced Monday it is giving UC Davis $379,000 in seed money and the opportunity to create one of 10 regional humanities centers. "It’s great news," said Jay Mechling, professor of American studies and center project director. "UC Davis is going to have a high-visibility, high-impact center for the humanities for the study of the Pacific United States." Dedicated to the cultures in the region, the new Pacific Regional Humanities Center will have many institutional partners in the five Pacific states and three territories, Mechling said. The goal is to give the public an ownership of the humanities outside of an academic setting. Proposals include education for public school teachers and students, radio and television documentaries, graduate student outreach to book clubs and historical societies, public programs at community centers, traveling art exhibitions, and Web sites. The grant represents a sea change in perspective for the humanities at UC Davis, said Elizabeth Langland, dean of the Division of Humanities, Arts and Cultural Studies.

The Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU) attached to the Department of Botany in the College of Natural Sciences of the University of Hawai'i, was founded in 1973 as a cooperative project with the National Park Service (NPS). In 1992, the Unit came under the wing of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the federal agency responsible for science in the Department of the Interior. USGS, NPS and the University of Hawai'i have a cooperative research program in Pacific Islands ecosystems administered through the PCSU Hawai'i. The Unit facilitates research efforts between the University and Department of the Interior and other federal agencies, departments of the State of Hawai'i and private organizations. The unit's primary focus on the conservation of Hawai'i's natural resources in protected habitats, such as national parks and wildlife refuges and the state's natural area reserves. Studies on cultural resources are also conducted particularly where they interface with natural resource management, a not uncommon situation in Hawai'i. Studies are also conducted in the National Park of American Samoa, and War in the Pacific National Historical Park in Guam and its associated unit in Saipan. Today, PCSU has over 180 employees and 100 projects, working behind the scenes to support a wide range of partners engaged in some of the most significant conservation biology and cultural/historical research in the world.
