College of Wooster The Center is pleased to share with you the syllabi for introductory courses in American religion that were developed in seminars led by Dr. Katherine Albanese of the University of California, Santa Barbara. In all of the seminar discussions, it was apparent that context, or the particular teaching setting, was an altogether critical factor in envisioning how students should be introduced to a field of study. The justification of approach, included with each syllabus, is thus germane to how you use the syllabus. For the personal use of teachers. Not for sale or redistribution.

A common question that arises when people are asked to donate their organs and tissues or those of their loved ones is: "Is my decision compatible with my religious beliefs?" A recent Gallup Survey found that less than 10 % were aware that their religion has laws and doctrines governing organ and tissue donation. Though answers may vary from one denomination to another, research has found that a majority of religions do support organ donation. The following are just a few of the findings: Locate the religious affiliation of your interest from the list below.

Ms Kallas-Way despatches depression from Ima Wimp.
This issue will deal solely with the problems of my most miserable correspondent so far, Ima Wimp. Ima is the inaugural winner of the Outlaw Golf T-shirt as she has related the most tragic tales of ineptitude, over the last couple of months. She would have been a prime candidate for the Outlaw Golf Girdle, but that prize was only manufactured after Ima's correspondence ended.
Dear Ms Kallas-Way I desperately want to learn to play golf well. It's all I've ever wanted to do since my six-month birthday. I spend two or three hours every night weeping because I can't realise my one and only deep and passionate ambition.
(Weep and wail no more, Ima. It plays hell with your distance judgement. Staple your top eyelid to your brow and your bottom eyelid to your cheek.)
But you see, my Amish religion doesn't allow me to play golf. I tried using a hand carved wooden club, and tucking my long skirts into my bloomers, but it just didn't work. My conscience made me suffer so much for being frivolous and worldly. Also, I am crippled. I have one wooden leg, one hand missing, my left ear came off in an accident and I am horribly scarred on the face. I have heard that people as terribly crippled as I am are unacceptable to fine golfers such as yourself.

appropriate materials to use in early childhood programs.  It provides links
to research projects and institutes, federal resources, and professional
organizations. It also has a catalog of both reviewed and described resources
for interventions.  The reviews of materials are completed by two experts who
then provide recommendations for use and adaptation.  Some materials have
full text included on the site.  Finally, the site lists some publications
including review guidelines for assessing materials and technical reports
describing literature reviews on early childhood related topics.  The site was created for information purposes, so it does not have “extras” that might be more interesting to look at.  Because of the amount of information included, it might sometimes be difficult to find a piece of information.  However, the wealth of information included should make this one of the first resources for finding appropriate materials.

[ Religion ] Cuisine Apparel Textile Arts Ceremonies ... Authors The Amish religion can be traced back to the Swiss Brethren, one of several branches of the Mennonite religion. The Mennonites, named after Menno Simmons a Dutch Anabaptist leader, suffered much persecution because they opposed the union of church and state, and the practice of infant baptism. During the late 17th century, the Amish led by their founder Jacob Amman split from the Swiss Brethren due to differences on interpretation of the Dordrecht Confession of 1632. Jacob Amman’s interpretation of this document was stricter than that of the Mennonites. This document endorsed the practiced of shunning or Meidung, and foot washing. Excommunicated members fall under the Meidung or the “ban”. The members of the church avoided associating with them, and did not eat with, talk to, buy from, or sell to them until they asked for and received forgiveness from the congregation. Jacob Amman believed that this practice should also require that a spouse of a person under this ban should not sleep with them until they repented. He also believed in shunning members who left the Amish church or married outsiders.

When visiting Pennsylvania to study the Amish you should go to BIRD IN HAND AND INTERCOURSE. These are the largest settlements of Old Order Amish in PA. These are people who are Anabaptists. An Anabaptist believes in adult baptism. Children are not baptised. They must be at least sixteen years of age, but most likely eighteen or older. The community wants the members to be sure they are willing to abide by the difficult rules of the Ordnung. Once a person is a member of the church they either keep the rules or risk shunning. Some rules...no radio, no TV, no worldly magazines or newspapers. Amish must stick to the prescribed form of dress for men and women. Their homes also must fit within the community. There is no electricity, but kitchens can look modern with the use of propane gas for the refrigerator. But forget the dishwasher. That is considered too modern. Letter from the Old Order Amish Churches, Wilton Wilton, Hillsboro, La Valle, Logansville, Readstown, Viroqua, Chaseburg and Cashton, Wisconsin, 4 February 1995 to Lt. Col. Kent Adams, Environmental Division, Andrews Air Force Base, MD, USA Dear Lt. Col. Adams, Over 300 years ago our ancestors in Europa were forced to move from place to place to survive severe persecution. Later they found a permanent home and freedom of religion in Pennsylvania where the first law guaranteed “That no person... who professes him or herself Obliged in Conscience to live peaceable and quietly under civil government, shall in any case be molested or prejudiced for his, or her conscientious persuasion or practice.” Here, our forefathers tilled the soil and handed down from generation to generation the religious values and traditional that preserve our “old way.” These include continuing to do all fieldwork with horses without the assistance of motorized vehicles. However, 29 years ago, increased population and heavy traffic forced a small group of Amish farmers to come to the Kickapoo Valley area of Wisconsin, in search of the peace of a less-populated area. Others followed and our farming communities of about 625 families continue to grow. We are writing to you because we are shocked and saddened to hear that the Air National Guard plans two new air corridors in which, each year, 2,151 training flights will fly at levels as low as 100 feet-over an area in which approximately 5,000 Amish people live. We plead with you to stop this plan because it would be alien and disastrous to our entire, simple, way of life including our religious beliefs, physical safety, and livelihood.

    History
During the Reformation in 16th Century Europe, Luther and Calvin promoted the concepts of individual freedom and the priesthood of all believers. In what has been called "the radical reformation" , some religious reformers took these beliefs to a logical conclusion; they preached that the believer should separate themselves from all secular activities. One of the largest groups, the Anabaptists promoted: baptism during adulthood after confession of faith, instead of during infancy the total separation of religion from and state worship services in the home rather than at church The religious movements that they founded are called "free churches" as contrasted to the state churches which were normal for the time. Their groups were simple associations of adult Christians. Most groups were wiped out in wars or programs of genocide which were organized by various governments, and both the main-line Protestant and Roman Catholic churches. The Mennonites are named after Menno Simons (1496-1561), a Dutch Anabaptist leader. They were severely persecuted and fled to Switzerland and other more remote areas of Europe. The Amish began as a split-off sect of the Swiss Mennonites during the late 17th century. Their founder was Jacob Amman, who based his beliefs and practices on the writings of Simons and on the 1632 Mennonite

    Definition:
The Amish are a Protestant anti-modernist religious group founded in the 1690s by Jakob Ammann, a Mennonite preacher who criticized other Mennonites for their failure to adhere to traditional standards. Ammann was able to attract followers from among the Mennonites in Switzerland, Holland and Germany. In the early 1700s they began to immigrate to the United States where their communities thrived. Today, Amish live in rural areas, refuse to use electricity and other modern things, and dress very plainly. They are, perhaps, the most visible of all religious "dissenters" in the United States - those who endeavor to fully isolate themselves from wider American society. They don't vote and they don't enlist in the military, but they do pay taxes. In addition with trying to live as close as possibly to the ways of members of the early Christian church, the Amish also follow a practice introduced by Ammann known as "shunning" (

The move of Amish into small businesses was documented by Donald B. Kraybill in his recent book, Amish Enterprise ...
