What is amnesia? Another severe type of memory disorder is called retrograde amnesia. Retrograde amnesia is also usually caused by brain injury or disease. In this condition, individuals have trouble remembering events in their life that occurred prior to the brain injury. These people do not lose all their memories. Usually, the memory loss is worst for events just before the injury; events from long ago are more likely to be safe. For example, if a man developed retrograde amnesia in middle age, he might have excellent memory for his childhood, nearly complete memories of young adulthood, and progressively less memory for the years leading up to his brain injury. There have been reports of persons with memory disorders being unable to remember that they are married, if the marriage took place shortly before the brain injury that caused the amnesia. Currently, there is no known way to restore memories which have been lost through retrograde amnesia. Usually, when a person has a brain injury resulting in a memory disorder, there is some degree of both anterograde and retrograde amnesia. Often, the anterograde amnesia is more severe and more difficult to deal with. For this reason, scientists and doctors often just use the word "amnesia" to refer to a general condition involving severe anterograde amnesia and some degree of retrograde amnesia.

To Everything There Is A Season . Return Home Town Hall DFME for October 13, 2002 Amnesia The intelligentsia blew its collective top last Sunday when in a taped CBS 60-Minutes segment Jerry Falwell violated every rule in the handbook of political correctness:
“I think Mohammed was a terrorist. He - I read enough of the history of his life written by both Muslims and – and - non-Muslims, that he was a - a violent man, a man of war.”
We didn't know Mohammed, of course, but the uproar in his defense was in marked contrast to the remarkable lack of attention paid to what was arguably the report's more controversial quote. This was the one provided by the former head of Israeli intelligence, Yossi Alpher who said:
"We have to get God out of this conflict if we’re going to have any chance to survive as a healthy, secure Jewish state.”
Finding common ground with the enemy is an understandable impulse and usually a wise one. But it too has its limits. We would ask Mr. Alpher, for example, whether he believes that taking God out of the conflict helped the Jews survive their erstwhile German oppressors? History would seem to indicate otherwise; that rather than appeasing the church-inspired bigotry of their German hosts, Jewish efforts to remove Judaism from the equation (by either abandoning it, "reforming" it, or converting) only antagonized the Germans further. Now one might ask what the alleged self-abnegation of nineteenth century German Jews has to do with defusing the present conflict with the Arabs? Can't Jews maintain their religious identity in a dialogue of mutual respect with the Arabs? To which we would reply - apparently not. According to Hazoni (see

About ebooks and their formats An "ebook" is an electronic book, a book in electronic format that can be read on a desktop computer, laptop computer or hand-held device. It is a convenient, modern and ecologically friendly way to read book-length material: ebooks are easy to buy, easy to read and easy to store. There are several electronic formats and reading devices available for reading ebooks. Books in the CER eBookstore are in both PDF (Portable Document Format, favored by Adobe) and LIT (Microsoft Reader format) which are the most popular formats for ebooks at the moment and work with most computer operating systems (IBM PC, Mac, etc) and other devices.

Films involving Amnesia Major films are those films which generally focus on Amnesia.
Minor Films are those in which Amnesia plays only a minor role or is used for comedy, thriller, horror purposes. Most of the films in this category are minor. The introduction of a character with amnesia is often tied in with some dire event in their past which is gradually revealed. This is usually murder. Another way in which amnesia is used as a plot device is to rekindle the lost romance between a husband and wife. Home page

AMNESIA
Experimental research on memory began with the publication of Ebbinghaus' Uber das Gedachtniss in 1885, but the clinical description of amnesia dates from even earlier. Korsakoff described the amnesic syndrome that bears his name in 1854. And in 1882 Ribot published Les Maladies de la memoire , with a detailed description of the consequences for memory of brain insult, injury, and disease, as well as a theory of memory and amnesia. On the basis of his observations, and Hughlings Jackson's principle that ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny, he concluded that brain disorder produces a progressive loss of memory that affects memories in the reverse order of their development. Thus, in traumatic retrograde amnesia, memories for events occurring immediately before the accident are most likely to be lost. This principle, now known as Ribot's Law, does not always hold, but it was an important first step in the journey from clinical description to scientific theory.
For reasons that are not completely clear, clinical and experimental study of amnesia languished for the first half of the 20th century, but was revived by Talland's 1965 monograph

by Vanessa DiMauro and Lisa Schlegel Nowhere in history has there been such a slippery issue around information dependability. In the oral tradition, it was the responsibility of the storyteller to insure that their narrative be passed down from generations to generation. This was the critical and imperative function of the storyteller. The storyteller took their charge with great pride and accountability to pass on the craft as well as the stories. The listener kept stories safely in their own memory, or relied on the storyteller to repeat it on request. This model cannot possibly support the volumes of firehose of information we wade in each day. Then, of course came text based records which required a scribe to take down, in print form, the letter and the information. Although this was of a more traditionally scholarly bend than the storyteller, the scribe provided a valuable service to the community in matters of public record and legal documentation as well as historical documentation. Then came the printing press, the Dewy decimal system and the birth of public libraries. All of these cultural evaluations which involve the sharing of information were critical in the evolution of learning. Text was safely kept in public as well as private libraries. If you are fortunate or rich, you would have access to a well stocked library.

Mankind in amnesia. By Immanuel Velikovsky. Mankind in amnesia. ImmanuelVelikovsky described his work on collective amnesia

Mankind in Amnesia
By Immanuel Velikovsky
Mankind in Amnesia
Immanuel Velikovsky described his work on collective amnesia as follows: "Mankind in Amnesia has to do not only with the past, like my other books primarily it has to do with the future, a future not removed by thousands or tens of thousands of years, but the imminent future, on whose threshold we now stand." The subject that Immanuel Velikovsky has chosen is the psychological condition and case history of the human race. Virtually every aspect of human behavior, every pattern in human history, and every article of human belief, if examined and illuminated in the light of the thesis of this book, reveals how human thought and action have been shaped and molded by repressed collective memories of cosmic catastrophes that befell our ancestors as recently as one hundred generations ago. In the section "A Collective Amnesia" of Worlds in Collision , published in 1950, Velikovsky outlined his principal psychological thesis. His theory of collective amnesia explains the inability of people to look at the overwhelming evidence of global catastrophes from all parts of the world that is unequivocally there, and the unwillingness to see the implications of that evidence. Velikovsky put this as follows in Worlds in Collision The memory of the cataclysms was erased, not because of lack of written traditions, but because of some characteristic process that later caused entire nations, together with their literate men, to read into these traditions allegories or metaphors where actually cosmic disturbances were clearly described.
