Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 29, 1980 Release # 80-032
Commission Files Complaints Following Fatal Accidents On Amusement Park Rides
WASHINGTON, D.C. (August 29) The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission late yesterday issued formal complaints involving amusement ride accidents at three major amusement parks located in Texas, California and Illinois. A two-count complaint was issued against the owner and the operator of the "Skyride" at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas in connection with a fatal accident which occurred on October 21, 1979. The second complaint was issued against the Marriott Corporation which owns and operates "Willard's Whizzer" roller coasters at its Great America amusement parks located in Santa Clara, California (near San Jose), and Gurnee, Illinois (north of Chicago). A fatal accident occurred on March 29, 1980, at the Great America park in Santa Clara. Both complaints charge that the corporations failed to report to CPSC in a timely fashion as is required by law potentially hazardous defects in the rides and previous accidents which have caused injuries to consumers. The law permits the Commission to seek civil penalties of as much as $500,000 from a company which fails to report to CPSC a defect that could create a substantial product hazard. The complaint against the State Fair of Texas also seeks correction of existing defects in the Skyride.

More Injuries On Amusement Park Rides
WASHINGTON According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) emergency room injuries from amusement park rides rose 87 percent over five years. Injuries at amusement parks that were serious enough to warrant emergency treatment rose from an estimated 2,400 in 1994 to 4,500 in 1998, Ann Brown, the commission's chairwoman, wrote in a recent letter to Rep. Edward Markey, D-Mass. In August alone there were four deaths from separate incidents in amusement park rides. These injuries and deaths may be the result of lax inspection and regulation of the amusement part industry. They certainly represent a heavy toll for victims who seek the excitement and recreation of the numerous amusement parks throughout the nation. In states like Florida amusement parks attract thousands of patrons daily with most taking at least one of the highly publicized thrill rides. The CPSC regulates so-called "mobile" rides that are hauled from carnival to carnival, but not rides at amusement parks and other permanent sites. To regulate rides at permanent sides, the commission would need at least a $5 million increase in its budget and additional staff, Brown said. Regulation of amusement parks is now left to state and local authorities. Brown said 14 states plus the District of Columbia do not have inspection programs.

Student teams own and operate an amusement park construction company. The task, to design, build and operate four popular park rides, focuses on all aspects of the construction process (including budget, labor, materials, design and the actual construction). Experiments with the built rides determine affects of energy, speed, acceleration and gravity with considerations for safety, operating costs and profit, and weather. The unit is rounded out with the design and implementation of marketing plans plus ride adaptations to accommodate design brief specifications.

29. The Thrill Of The Ride - Do Amusement Park Rides Fascinate You?
Do not rock or shake cars. Report problems to the park. Don't let yourself becomean accident, follow these rules when riding all amusement park rides.

Please Visit our Advertisers News The Thrill of the Ride Would you strap yourself into a canvas wrap, attached to a bungee cord and be tossed around fifteen stories off the ground? Would you climb into a small car, buckle up the seat belt and plunge down a wooden track? Do you like being flipped upside down at racing speeds around hairpin curves? Thrill Seekers
I will be the first to admit it. I do not like roller coasters, wild rides, bungee jumping or anything that tosses me around and makes me what to throw up when I get off of it. Having said that....this past week I spent a day at Canada's Wonderland near Toronto, Ontario. The popular theme park is home to many thrill rides. If the long lines of kids were any indication, most people don't feel the same way I do. What I don't quite understand is, what is it that makes you want to ride these things? Is it the danger? The feeling that you are out of control? Do you like the feeling of helplessness? What is it that makes so many of you want to actually strap yourself into these things and for a few short minutes get the thrill of flying? There is nothing new about roller coasters. The world's oldest standing roller coaster dates back to 1902. The first coasters rode on rickety wooden tracks.

Amusement Park Physics Since the early 1900's and the construction of the park at Coney Island, we have been fascinated with amusement park rides. We love to feel the rush of going up and down on a roller coaster. Or feel our bodies being pushed to the wall in the tea cups or tilt-o-whirl. Or even experience total freefall on rides that drop us over 100 feet straight down. But have you ever wondered why we feel and experience the rush on these rides? Well, in case you haven't already guessed it, it's all about PHYSICS!! Select one of these pages below to learn more about how each of these concepts applies to our favorite rides. amusement park rides AT THEME PARKS ELSEWHERE Injuries on rides are typicallynot required to be reported so no one really knows just how many occur.
http://www.scambustersusa.com/amusement park rides at theme parks and elsewhere.
Injuries on rides are typically not required to be reported so no one really knows just how many occur. In fact, hundreds do occur but state lawmakers may not be aware of them because amusement parks are allowed to police themselves concerning these matters and are not held accountable by any government agency or law in most all states!
Neck and back injuries are reported to occur during many rides, as well as some cases of brain bleeding or hemorrhages and conceivably a multitude of other injuries considering the violent, body-shaking nature of many rides.
Critics complain that when you load small children on heavy machinery that is potentially traveling at high rates of speeds, the public should be aware of specific rides’ safety track records and the amusement parks should be held accountable for the safety and injuries sustained during these rides, all of which should be made public; and more explicit warning signs on rides may not always be enough.

Parents and Youth Encouraged to Follow Safety Regulations
Wednesday, May 22, 2002 The State Labor Department today reminded New Yorkers that families and tourists again will be able to enjoy rides at amusement parks and carnivals to the maximum by following basic safety guidelines this season. "As summertime rapidly approaches, New York State is home to hundreds of amusement parks and traveling carnivals," said State Labor Commissioner Linda Angello. "The Department of Labor takes great pride in ensuring the safety of New York's families and visitors at these venues and we will continue these efforts in the future." The State Department of Labor enforces amusement ride safety throughout the state, except in New York City. Labor Department staff inspect all rides at stationary parks at least once a year, and rides at traveling carnivals or fairs are inspected every time the ride is set up in a new location. A ride cannot be operated without a permit from the Labor Department.

Study: Amusement Park Rides Do Not Cause Brain Injuries
(Philadelphia-WABC, October 16, 2002) Roller coasters don't cause brain injuries. That according to a new study done by the University of Pennsylvania, which found that the rides do not produce enough "head rotational acceleration" to cause bleeding or swelling of the brain. Photos From Our Report On The Potential Dangers Of Coasters
Still, other researchers and lawmakers disagree, citing dozens of reports of brain injuries since 1979. The reports lead New Jersey lawmakers to pass the first statewide limit on gravitational or "G-forces" on rides. The researchers, whose study was published in Wednesday's Journal of Neurotrauma, used a mathematical model to predict the effect the rides with high G-forces would have on the head and neck.
