Cabeza de Vaca was the first European to describe America from Florida through Arizona. His writings are the oldest written history we have of Native Americans. He set the stage for the Conquest of this continent. This Site describes Cabeza de Vaca's eight year journey based on his own writings. DeVaca's translated narration is available on the Internet, thanks to PBS. That narration, annotated in 4 parts here, is a large part of this presentation. What Vaca privately told two powerful Conquistadors who followed him into North America, Coronado and DeSoto, may never be known. Chaco Canyon, San Juan Basin, NM

Ideal for shorter-term drumming and decor, they have deep tone and are handprinted (using non-toxic inks) with petroglyph-inspired designs. Available in 16" octagonal only. Free beater included. This traditional rawhide handle is available ONLY with these designs or plain in 16" octagonal. Free beater included. Millennium Labyrinth

The size of their tribe has been on the rise They are almost the only native Americangroup that is larger were too few to present any threat to the anasazi.
http://www.santafe.com/history/The_Navajo.html
The Navajo The Navajo are part of the Apache, a mobile, independent group that has been traced to roots in Canada's Northwest Territories and Alaska. Their language is of Athabascan stock, and can still be understood, to some degree, by tribes in the North-Country. The name "Apache" is a corruption of a Pueblo term, Apachu, variously suggesting a translation as "strangers" or "enemies," depending on the context. This reveals the age-old antagonisms that have existed between the Pueblo (including the Hopi) and the Apache.
The Apache were hunter-gatherers who survived by constantly moving into new, fresh hunting grounds, drifting on as game was thinned, and by being tough and aggressive. This tradition of expansion and migration repeatedly brought the Apache into conflict with the prior inhabitants of the new lands which they were entering Relations between the Apache and the more-settled groups that they met during these wanderings were generally strained, at best.
At least one sub-group of the Apache found a comparatively rich land and way of living, in the Four Corners region, where they showed great flexibility, intelligence, and willingness to adapt to new ideas. These sharp-witted members of the Apache nation adopted a lifestyle which allowed them to abandon their long tradition of constant wandering and total dependence on hunting. This was a revolution for this tribe, but the tribal members were a quick-minded and observant band, who watched the world around them, and displayed a willingness to learn from what they saw.

Ruins of the Ancient Ones, the "Anasazi" in the Navajo language, and their rock art are found in abundance around the Four Corners (Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado).
The Anasazi are the most romanticized and the most studied of the prehistoric Southwestern cultures. They seem to have lived in the most beautiful locations and left thousands of stone houses, cliff dwellings and goods behind.
They are believed to have initially emerged from the same archaic cultural milieu as the other regional groups, migrating into the Four Corners area around 100 B.C. Evidence of the Anasazi Culture exists from southwestern Colorado and southeastern Utah, throughout northeastern Arizona and northwestern New Mexico.
While in their formative stages, the Anasazi evolved from hunter-gatherers to agriculturists, but they remained more reluctant than the Hohokam and Mogollon to become sedentary until around 500 A.D., when their culture began to evolve rapidly. They borrowed coiled pottery-making from the Mogollon, as well as communal Great Kivas.
The Anasazi were dry farmers who relied on capturing unpredictable rainfall for the growth of crops. After 1000 A.D. their culture reached its maximum population and geographic distribution, due to more efficient farming methods. They established trails and roads and created points from which signals could be relayed, as a form of communication. They engaged in a thriving trade, especially of their distinctive black-on-white pottery and turquoise.

Alogonquin "Algonquian" is not the name of a native tribe or nation; it is a language family, like "romance" or "indo-euoropean". There are no "Algonquian Indians". There are dozens of North American Nations that speak Algonquian languages all across the United States, but the languages and their speakers are as different from each other as French and Spanish and Italian are. Most of the New England tribes spoke Algonquian languages, and many of the "Indian" words common in English today - such as raccoon, succotash, Massachusetts, moccasin, etc. - are from one or another of the Algonquian languages, such as Abenaki, Wampanoag, Nipmuc, Penboscot, Shawnee, Delaware, etc.

New Review: Return of the Anasazi by Wee Dilts
Follow Ups Post Followup ebooksnbytes Message Board Posted by EBookCritique.com on August 28, 19102 at 12:31:00: EBookCritique.com, a new Book Review Website, has just released a review of "Return of the Anasazi" by Wee Dilts. Here is an excerpt:
Have you ever wondered what happened to the Anasazi Indians? Have you speculated about how the Egyptian pyramids came to be, or pondered the truth behind stories of aliens? "Return of the Anasazi" by Wee Dilts is a fictional story centered around the lost civilization of the Anasazi Indians. For those of you who aren't familiar with this piece of American history, the Anasazi Indians were an ancient Native American tribe who lived in the southwest area of the United States. Famous for their pottery and cliff dwellings, the culture "disappeared" sometime around the 1200 A.D. period in history. The term "disappeared" is used because the Anasazi dwellings were left completely intact. It is as if the people simply walked away, taking no pottery, tools, or personal possessions with them. In "Return of the Anasazi", Dilts weaves an intricate tale that explains many of these historical mysteries, while simultaneously addressing the valid and modern-day issue of the Earth's environment.
