Introduction
The SPL's Anatomy Browser project brings a rich, highly detailed, hierarchical view of human anatomy to ordinary computers or workstations. Please view some of our growing collection of anatomic data sets. To view the examples below, all you need is the Java software environment (version 1.1.3 or later) running on your computer. By using Java applets through your web browser, there's no software installation needed. (Please note that some of the examples are quite large, and may take several minutes to download their data over slow network connections.)

The anatomy atlas project
The SPL, together with Division of Neurosciences at Harvard Medical School, has been engaged in making a detailed morphological brain atlas since 1990. In collaboration with several other groups, this work is now being extended to other parts of human anatomy. Projects exist for the chest and abdomen, spine, pelvis, the inner ear, and the knee. As improvements in imaging technology continue, we are just beginning to incorporate other type of information into the morphological "landscape".

Cross Section Of Ear
Cochlear Partition Organ Of Corti Cross Section Of Ear : consisting of the outer ear, middle ear, and inner ear Outer Ear: Comprising the pinna ear cana l, and outer layer of the eardrum . Sound enters the ear canal. At the eardrum, sound energy (air pressure changes) are transformed into mechanical energy of eardrum movement. Pinna : The pinna is composed of cartilage and has a relatively poor blood supply. It presence on both sides of the head allows us to localize the source of sound from the front vs. the back. Our ability to localize from side to side depends on the relative intensity and relative phase of sound reaching each ear and the analysis of the phase/intensity differences within the brainstem. And, of course, the lobe of the pinna is handy for single or multiple hoops, loops, diamonds, etc. Cartilaginous Portion of External Ear Canal The ceruminous and sebaceous glands in the cartilaginous portion of the ear canal combine to produce cerumen. A web page is an electronic document written in a computer language called HTML , short for Hypertext Markup Language . Each web page has a unique address, called a URL or Uniform Resource Locator that identifies its location on the network. A website has one or more related web pages, depending on how it's designed. Web pages on a site are linked together through a system of hyperlinks , enabling you to jump between them by clicking on a link. On the Web, you navigate through pages of information according to your interests.
Home Sweet Home Page
When you browse the World Wide Web you'll see the term home page often. Think of a home page as the starting point of a website. Like the table of contents of a book or magazine, the home page usually provides an overview of what you'll find at the website. A site can have one page, many pages or a few long ones. If there isn't a lot of information, the home page may be the only page. But usually you will find at least a few other pages. Web pages vary wildly in design and content, but many use a traditional magazine format. At the top of the page is a masthead or banner graphic, then a list of items, such as articles, often with a brief description. The items in the list usually link to other pages on the site, or to other sites. Sometimes these links are highlighted words in the body of the text, or are arranged in a list, like an index. They can also be a combination of both. A web page may also have images that link to other content.

Even though the Internet is a global network, in many ways it resembles a small town, with similar services. Let's say you want to send or receive mail. The Internet has electronic post offices. There are online libraries with millions of books and periodicals you can use any time of the day or night. Chat rooms are the Internet equivalent of 24-hour coffee shops, with people eager to gab anytime you want. The World Wide Web is like a giant mall, where you can shop, order a pizza, preview a movie, and listen to radio stations from around the world. All of these represent different ways of using the Internet. In the real world you travel to different places over the same network of roads using different modes of transportation. You might use a car for a pleasure trip and a truck for hauling lumber. Getting around on the Internet works much the same way.

A guide to the many parts of the human eye and how they function. The ability to see is dependent on the actions of several structures in and around the eyeball. The graphic below lists many of the essential components of the eye's optical system. Click a term for more information

When you look at an object, light rays are reflected from the object to the cornea , which is where the miracle begins. The light rays are bent, refracted and focused by the cornea, lens , and vitreous . The lens' job is to make sure the rays come to a sharp focus on the retina . The resulting image on the retina is upside-down. Here at the retina, the light rays are converted to electrical impulses which are then transmitted through the optic nerve , to the brain, where the image is translated and perceived in an upright position!

THE ANATOMY OF A HEAD INJURY
Injuries involving some type of blow to the head are among the most common in our society. Some 700,000 people in North America suffer traumatic head injuries each year, and between 70,000 and 90,000 are left permanently disabled. Head injuries can range from relatively minor damage to the scalp and face such as lacerations, abrasions and bruising to more serious consequences involving damage to the brain. While traumatic brain injury occurs much less frequently, it is important to know how it is identified and what to do for the person. Loss of consciousness, even for a very brief period, is one of the clearest indications that the brain may have been affected by a blow to the head. A confusional state involving uncertainty about time, date, and location and/or a period of memory loss for the events surrounding the head injury are also indicators of trauma to the brain. Any of these symptoms following a blow to the head should be taken seriously. With the most severe symptoms, loss of consciousness for more than a few minutes, the person should receive immediate medical attention. With less severe symptoms the person should be watched for a period of several hours after the head trauma. The person's state of consciousness, orientation to time and place and immediate memory function (e.g., remembering a series of four numbers) should be evaluated periodically during this time. Any evidence of deterioration may be a sign of the delayed effects of brain injury due to swelling or internal bleeding and require that the person receive medical attention as soon as possible. Some appreciation for how and why these symptoms arise will provide insight into why even a seemingly mild blow to the head may have very serious and potentially life-threatening consequences.
