    The Cambridge Ancient History
Volume 14 , Late Antiquity: Empire and Successors, AD 425–600
Edited by Averil Cameron, Bryan Ward-Perkins, Michael Whitby
In stock With Volume XIV The Cambridge Ancient History concludes its story. This latest volume embraces the wide range of approaches and scholarship which have in recent decades transformed our view of Late Antiquity. In particular, traditional political and social history has been enormously enhanced by integrating the rich evidence of Christian writing, and the constantly expanding results of archaeological research. A picture emerges of a period of considerable military and political disruption, but also of vibrant intellectual and cultural activity. The volume begins with a series of narrative chapters. These are followed by sections on government and institutions, economy and society, and religion and culture. A section on the provinces and the non-Roman world marks the rise of new and distinct political and cultural entities. This volume, and the CAH, ends in around AD 600, before the Arab conquests shattered for ever what remained of the unity of the Roman world.
    Reviews
‘Cambridge’s production standards are exemplary. This volume is self-recommending.’ Martin Brooke, Church Times

    Handy Ancient History Homepage
Welcome to the past. Have you ever wondered what life was like before Christianity?
This page focuses on four major groups of pre-Christian literate civilizations. It makes no claims of being all-inclusive in either subject matter or links. However, if you have either a natural curiosity or a need to do research for that pesky Western Civilizations 101 paper, this site can help.
Eventually, this site will include links to language instruction on the web, mostly focused on Latin classes.
For now, the civilizations included are broken into the following four catagories.
  • Roman
  • Greek
  • Nordic
  • Mesopotamian
There are a great number of generic sites which cover both the Greek and Roman worlds. Those links I have catagorized under Antiquity . If you are looking for specific information, feel free to go directly to the Roman, Greek, Nordic or Mesopotamian links. However, the general Antiquity sites should not be ignored. There are some real gems there.
    Texts
Text submissions are always welcome. Acceptance is entirely at the discression of the editor. There are no guarentees made for quality or accuracy of research.
Due to the eccentricites of HTML, there are a few guidelines necessary for submission.
