In a marriage of techniques used in interventional radiology and vascular surgery, physicians at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center have created an "endovascular stent graft" and successfully used the device to repair an aortic aneurysm with a minimally invasive procedure. Although the pioneering effort was motivated by a desire to help an 82-year old patient deemed too weak to withstand the open surgery that is traditionally performed to repair an abdominal aortic aneurysm, doctors believe a similar method will one day become the standard of care for many patients.
"Although we're using specially crafted apparatus, we're making the same kind of repair that is accomplished with surgery," says Jeffrey P. Carpenter, MD, associate professor of surgery, division of vascular surgery. "The important difference is that instead of working from the outside of the patient, we work from the inside. Our new procedure is much less invasive, so the patient is spared the risks and debilitation associated with major abdominal surgery."
The endovascular stent graft was fashioned by assistant professor of radiology Richard A. Baum, MD, with devices that are commonly used in angioplasty and surgical procedures. Self-expanding wire stents tiny, stainless steel scaffolds were sewn together and then encased

Aortic rupture, chest X-ray Aortic aneurysm Alternative names Return to top Aneurysm - aortic Definition Return to top An abnormal dilation of the abdominal portion of the aorta (the major artery from the heart). Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top Abdominal aortic aneurysm involves a dilation, stretching, or ballooning of the aorta. The exact cause is unknown, but risk factors include atherosclerosis and hypertension . Abdominal aortic aneurysm may be caused by infection, congenital weakening of the connective tissue component of the artery wall, or rarely, from trauma.
Abdominal aortic aneurysm can affect anyone, but it is most often seen in men 40 to 70 years old. A common complication is ruptured aortic aneurysm. This is a medical emergency where the aneurysm breaks open, resulting in profuse bleeding into the abdominal cavity. Ruptured aneurysm occurs more frequently in patients with larger (>5cm) aneurysms.

Chlamydia pneumoniae Causes Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm
Antibodies to Chlamydia pneumoniae are rarely found in children less than five years old; the primary infection usually occurs between ages 8 and 16. Reinfections occur throughout childhood, and the rate of infection is higher among men than women. In non-elderly people it causes mild respiratory symptoms, but may cause pneumonia in the elderly. Indications of the presence of Chlamydia pneumoniae have been found in the majority of studies which have looked for them. C pneumoniae was found in 11/25 aortas, 5/9 iliac arteries, 2/5 femoral arteries, and 1/2 iliac veins, by PCR in AAA specimens. It was also seen in vascular tissue from 3/6 "ostensibly normal" liver transplant donors, which showed some atherosclerotic changes. "The figures are perhaps conservative as it is possible that more specimens would be found to be C pneumoniae positive if a larger amount of tissue was examined." (Detection and widespread distribution of Chlamydia pneumoniae in the vascular system and its possible implications. G Ong, BJ Thomas, AO Mansfield, BR Davidson, D Taylor-Robinson. J Clin Pathol 1996 Feb;49(2):102-106).

Aneurysms
(En español) Most people think that an aneurysm means bleeding in the tiny blood vessels of the brain. Actually, aneurysms are a balloon-like bulge in a blood vessel, and they can also affect the larger vessels in your body. (These larger vessels are called arteries.) An aneurysm happens when the pressure of blood passing through part of a weakened blood vessel forces the vessel to bulge outward, forming what you might think of as a thin-skinned blister. Not all aneurysms are life-threatening. But if the bulging stretches the artery too far, this vessel may burst, causing a person to bleed to death. An aneurysm that bleeds into the brain can lead to stroke or death. Where do aneurysms happen in the body?
  • In the arteries that supply blood to the brain. This is called a cerebral aneurysm.
In parts of the aorta. The aorta is the large vessel that carries blood from the heart to other parts of the body. Aortic aneurysms can happen in the area below the stomach (abdominal aneurysm) or in the chest (thoracic aneurysm). An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is usually located below the kidneys.

The Aneurysm Center
Aneurysm (aneurism) is a bulging out of part of the wall of a blood vessel. There are a number of different types of aneurysms including an abdominal aortic aneurysm and a cerebral or brain aneurysm. An aneurysm forms where the wall has weakened, often due to the build-up of plaque. It may also be an inherited condition or a complication of high blood pressure (hypertension). Left untreated, aneurysms may tear or burst (a ruptured aneurysm). An aortic aneurysm is also known as an abdominal aneurysm, thoracic aortic aneurysm or abdominal aortic aneurysm. This condition is characterized by the ballooning out, of part of the wall of the aorta, the main artery carrying oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the rest of the body. If accompanied by an aortic dissection , it is classified as a dissecting aortic aneurism. A condition called polyarteritis nodosa has been associated with abdominal aortic aneurism. Cerebral aneurysms (brain aneurysms or berry aneurysms) are the bulge in the wall of a blood vessel in the brain (one of the cerebral arteries). A cerebral aneurism (brain aneurism) is typically found where the arteries branch at the base of the brain. The cause is unknown, but smoking increases a person's risk of developing this condition, which can lead to a stroke or transient ischemic attack Ventricular aneurysms (ventricular aneurisms) are the bulging or ballooning out of part of the wall of one of the heart's lower chambers (ventricles), usually the left. They also known as a ventricular septal aneurisms, interventricular aneurisms or simply a septal aneurisms.

Aneurysm
What is an aneurysm?
An aneurysm is the dilation thinning and ballooning or bulging out in part of the wall of a vein, artery, or the heart. An aneurysm may be small and not cause any symptoms.
What causes an aneurysm to form? An aneurysm may be caused or aggravated by disease (such as atherosclerosis or hypertension), injury, or an abnormality present at birth. How are aneurysms diagnosed? In addition to a complete medical history and physical examination, diagnostic procedures for an aneurysm may include any, or a combination of, the following:
  • computerized tomography scan (Also called a CT or CAT scan.) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) - a diagnostic procedure that uses a combination of large magnets, radiofrequencies, and a computer to produce detailed images of organs and structures within the body.

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm and Low Back Pain
Norman Engel, MS, DC, DABCO An aneurysm, by definition, is a sac formed by the dilatation of the wall of an artery, a vein or the heart. The chief signs of an arterial aneurysm are the formation of a pulsating tumor and often a bruit is heard over the swelling. Sometimes there are symptoms from pressure on contiguous parts. The aorta is the largest artery in the body. It arises from the left ventricle, ascending and bending over the heart, descending anteriorly to the thoracic and lumbar vertebrae. It splits at L-4 into the common iliacs, femorals, tibials, and dorsalis pedis arteries, supplying the lower extremities. The average diameter of aorta is 2.0-2.5 cm. More than 90 percent of abdominal aneurysms are associated with atherosclerosis and can cause leg pain (claudication), numbness or fatigue. An artery may be sclerosed (hardened) but if the lumenal diameter isn't altered, there is no aneurysm. Most abdominal aortic aneurysms do not produce symptoms, but some people feel a pulsating sensation in the abdomen. These silent (asymptomatic) aneurysms are often recognized by careful physical examination. Abdominal aortic aneurysm is most likely to occur in people older than 60 years, and it affects men more often than women.

... Hans Stecher The first word we hear from the average person when an individual complains of a massive headache, collapses, and dies in a matter of days is "aneurysm". A relatively common bleed in the third compartment of the brain from which nearly everyone of us has had a friend or relative die. However, according to Dr Azad Esack, a consultant neurologist, there are really four types of Intracranial Bleeds in the head from which bleeding can occur in several areas, so that a patient who collapses and dies from a brain hemorrhage could have suffered from any of the four and not necessarily an aneurysm, which is caused by a rupture of a congenital defect in the wall of a blood vessel in the brain. Stress, for instance, can cause a rise in blood pressure which puts pressure on the already weak system and gives rise to this bleed. The "Aneurysm" and "Aterio-Venous Malformation" described as a abnormal collection of blood vessels may both give rise to one of the types, Sub-Arachnoid Bleeding.
