A recent visitor asked for information about a forbear who served in the British 80th Regiment: I think your best source is the Australian Joint Copying Project (AJCP) which has microfilmed most records in Britain dealing with Australia. This includes regimental records (which of course returned to Britain with the regiments when they left Australia). AJCP is available in the State Library of Victoria, the National Library (and other State Libraries). The other course is to contact the Public Record Office in London where most original regimental records are.

The Boer War
David Cody , Associate Professor of English, Hartwick College
There were really two Boer Wars. The first, in 1880-81, began after D'Israeli had annexed the South African Boer Republicsthe Transvaal and the Orange Free Statein 1877. After making repeated attempts to repeal annexation, the Boers under Kruger revolted and secured limited self-government. After gold and diamonds were discovered in the Transvaal, tensions between native Boers and British "uitlanders," aggravated by guerrilla raids and the repressive policies of the British Governor of the Cape, became more intense. After the Boers attacked Cape Colony and Natal in October 1899, the second war, which lasted until 1902, was underway. British forces at Ladysmith, Mafeking, and Kimberley were surrounded and besieged until relieved by counter-attacks by forces under Roberts, the British commander-in-chief who had been the hero of the Indian mutiny. Between September 1900 and the peace of Vereenigning in May 1902, Boer commandos fought a prolonged guerrilla war against the British, who responded by putting Boer civilians in concentration camps.

[14th to 28th February 1900] by Ken Gillings, Anglo Boer War Centenary Committee Following the expiry of the Boers ultimatum to Great Britain, on the 11 th October 1899, the Boers invaded Natal from the Transvaal and Orange Free State. The first battle was fought on the 20 th October at Talana, followed on the 21 st at Elandslaagte. The Boers advanced, and Ladysmith became besieged from about the 2 nd November. Scouting parties proceeded southwards, almost as far as Pietermaritzburg, with the battle of Willow Grange being fought between Estcourt and Mooi River on the 23 rd November. The main British force commanded by Gen. Sir Redvers Buller VC, was , meanwhile, advancing from Durban, and the Boers, commanded by Cmdt. Gen. Piet Joubert, realised that they would be in danger of being trapped against the Thukela River, and withdrew to what has become known as the Thukela Line. [11 December 1900.] by MS Coghlan, KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Museum Service Vryheid in the south-eastern South African Republic, had been captured in September 1900 by Lieutenant-General H.J.T.Hildyard's 5th Division, as British forces pushed the Boer commandos out of Natal. The town was garrisoned by 900 men, mostly the 2nd Battalion, Royal Lancaster Regiment (six companies), under command of Lt.Col.J.M.Gawne of the Royal Lancs. Most of this garrison was situated on Lancaster Hill, a dominating feature on the northern outskirts. Key posts were Royal Garrison Artillery emplacements at North Gun Point and South Gun Post, with a central camp on a plateau called Mounted Infantry Plateau. Although the hill was in the process of being further fortified with stone breastworks, the garrison had grown complacent by the time a 1200-strong Boer force approached from the north in December. At approximately 02h00 on the 11th, the Boers launched several almost simultaneous assaults. Mounted Infantry Camp was overrun after total surprise was achieved, but North Gun Point, with a steep approach for attackers, held out, as did South Gun Post overlooking the town. The British soon regrouped, and apart from the loss of several minor outposts, successfully withstood continuous attack throughout that day. Their most prominent casualty was Lt.Col.Gawne himself, who had led a relieving column from Vryheid. He was killed attempting to reach North Gun Point from the lower plateau.

The Anglo-Boer War: 1899-1902
It is generally accepted amongst historians that the Anglo-Boer War was caused by the need of the Afrikaner (South Africans of mostly Dutch, French and German origin) to protect their vested interests in South Africa against a British effort to expand political and economic interests in southern Africa. The discovery of diamonds, at what is now the town of Kimberley in the Northern Cape, and the discovery of gold in what is today known as the province of Gauteng, not only rendered the Afrikaner Republic( in what was then called Transvaal) the wealthiest and most powerful nation in southern Africa, but also caused an inflow of mostly British expatriates to the diamond and gold fields of the Transvaal and Northern Cape. In a quest for political power to gain control of wealth in Southern Africa, the British forces, supported by two local British businessmen, Cecil John Rhodes and Alfred Beit, planned to take over the Transvaal Republiek. When these plans became known by the Boere, it was decided to invade Northern Natal and the Northern Cape, which resulted in the now famous sieges of the town of Ladismith and Mafikeng. After the relief of the town and the successful annexation of the Transvaal by British forces, the Boere continued with successful guerilla warfare. The British forces retaliated by concentrating Boer women, children and farm workers in camps after burning Boer homesteads throughout the country. Approximately 22000 British Soldiers and 7000 Boer Warriors died in the campaign. It is estimated that between 18000 and 28000 Afrikaner women and children died in the concentration camps. The black population, who mostly fought with the Boere in a non-combatant capacity, but also cooperated with the British, also suffered because of the war. Progress is now being made to determine the exact number of non-whites killed during the war and to identify places of burial.

BBC Radio retrospective on the Anglo-Boer war, 1899-1902
By Brian Smith 29 September 1999 Use this version to print This October marks 100 years since the outbreak of the second South African War, better known as the Boer War. Over the next three years the centenary will be celebrated in South Africa with a variety of anniversaries and memorials. A number of books are planned for release and a spate of broadcasts will mark the occasion. One such programme was aired on BBC Radio 4 during two weeks in mid-September. Entitled The Boer War , it was narrated by the historian Denis Judd, author of Empire: The British Imperial Experience, from 1765 to the Present The programme made use of aural archives and interviewed a number of leading historians. It also employed actors to speak the words of historical accounts of the day, and in one instance interviewed a 109 year-old woman who remembers the war as a nine-year-old girl. It made for an absorbing programme.

TIP: You can search this page by using your browser's find or search function
The Anglo-Boer War is said today to be the last of the `gentlemen's wars' , the `last Colonial war' and the `forgotten war'. It was soon overshadowed by World War 1, the unprecedented bloodbath of 1914-1918. Earlier during the Anglo-Boer War, the well-ordered forces of Greater Britain were put to the test by irregular commandos of Afrikaners (of Dutch extraction) which included swift-moving, mounted farmers armed with deadly Mauser rifles and bitter determination. Although described as the Anglo-Boer War, many nationalities were drawn into the conflict. There were Australian, New Zealand, Canadian, Ceylonese forces and Indian cavalry and, on the side of the Boers, Germans, French, Russians and Irishmen. Americans and Irishmen fought for both sides.
