Anglo Boer War (1899 - 1900)
The Siege and Relief of Ladysmith Although the Anglo Boer War started on the 11th of October 1899, it did not reach Ladysmith until the 30th. Then the apparently invincible British garrison in Ladysmith, under the command of General Sir George White, suffered a humiliating defeat at the battle of Nicholson's Nek with over 1000 casualties, most of whom were taken prisoner. Fortunately, the Royal Navy arrived literally in the nick of time and turned a major disaster into one of smaller proportions. Retreating forces from the battles at Dundee and Elandslaagte had increased the numbers at Ladysmith which, although they gave more fighting power to Sir George White, also meant more mouths to feed and therefore put more strain on the supplies. The internment proper began on the 2nd of November when the telegraph lines were cut and the railway line blown up just beyond what was to become the Intombi Camp hospital. For 118 days, over 20 000 people, consisting mainly of military personnel, civilians, Indian and Native helpers, were imprisoned within the town and were to suffer the ravages of disease and starvation on an unprecedented scale.

South Africa, UK and Australia
commemorate the Anglo-Boer South African War of
30 May 2002 On 31 May 1901 the Treaty Vereeniging was signed at Melrose House in Pretoria. The peace treaty signed by the British High Command and the two Boer Republics ended one of the bloodiest wars on South African soil. On 1 June 2002 South Africans will commemorate the Anglo Boer/South African war of 1899-1902 during a ceremony at the Rand Regiments Memorial in Johannesburg. The memorial was rededicated in 1999 and now stands in honour of all men, women and children, whether white or black, friend or foe, foreigner or South African. During the ceremony wreaths will be laid by various Embassies and descendants of those involved in the war, in honour of all persons, who died during the war. Speakers include Dr Ben Ngubane, Minister of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology; Major General Sir Granville-Chapman who will speak on behalf of the British Government; General (retired) C Viljoen; and Lieutenant General P Leahy from Australia. Since 1999 Government embarked on a programme of commemoration whose theme was to investigate the involvement of black people in the Anglo Boer/South African War. Highlighting this aspect of the war has meant that it is now widely accepted that this did not only involve white men and women. Recent historical research shows evidence that women, the elderly, children from black and white communities were victims of diseases and starvation.

The Boer War
by Neil Parsons The Boer War, otherwise known as the South African War or the (Second) Anglo-Boer War started at midnight on the night of Wednesday-Thursday October 11th-12th, 1899. The first hostile act of the war was actually deep inside Botswana, when Boers sabotaged the Cape-Rhodesia telegraph line somewhere near Mahalapye in the early hours of Thursday October 12th. On Friday the 13th the war began in earnest with a Boer attack on a British armoured train at Kraaipan south of Mafikeng. The Boers planned to capture Mafikeng and advance through Botwana, to capture Bulawayo and Zimbabwe. African soldiers were deeply involved in the war, particularly in and around Botswana. Barolong, Bakgatla, and Bangwato fought on the side of the British. Bahurutshe, Bagananwa and others fought on the side of the Boers. Hence the war is usually called the South African War by historians today, to stress the fact that it was much more than just an Anglo-Boer War.
