February 1st, 1999 2000 started without a hitch here as everywhere else in the world. The whole Y2K bug thing turned out to be either one of the biggest hoaxes ever foisted on a gullible public, or a ringing endorsement of the skills of IT people around the world who dealt with the problem. So who’s behind the bombings? No-one has claimed responsibility for the attacks, although the prime suspect is a Muslim vigilante group called PAGAD (People Against Gangsterism and Drugs). PAGAD were suspected also of the 1998 Planet Hollywood bombing that killed two people and injured dozens of others. But is PAGAD responsible here? It seems possible that they are, despite their protestations of innocence. An interesting twist in the case has occurred more recently, however. A police informer, cocaine addict and, according to outgoing police chief George Fivaz, "chronic liar" named Deon Mostert was arrested as a suspect in the bombings. While details are not clear, it appears that he may have been arrested while in the company of two anti-corruption squad police. It turns out that Mostert is not actually a suspect after all, but instead has made allegations that the bombings are a result of an extortion racket involving police and security firms.

Ladies and Gentlemen, For a long time, the cultural landscape of South Africa has been out of balance. To this day, one does not often see, around the country, the memorials and monuments that represent the heritage of most South Africans. It is only now that the first tangible moves towards redress are being made - to re evaluate "the conventional" wisdom of history, and to listen anew to the narratives and experiences of our elders. Ladies and gentlemen, as you know, the earliest major confrontations of Anglo-Boer South African War took the form of tree sieges - in Ladysmith, Kimberly and Mafikeng. The Boer military tactic to surround the enemy, blocking their exit and entrance, then waiting for them to surrender, had succeeded more than once in Boer efforts to conquer local African kingdoms and was to be, once again, their main strategy. In that war, Mafikeng was the first to come under siege. Mafikeng, home of the Barolong, had seen many significant battles over many generations, mainly skirmishes for control of this strategic terrain between the Barolong and the Khoisan. These were later to be followed by skirmishes with a succession of missionaries, traders, Boer trekkers, whit entrepreneurs and British colonisers.

    History of Paul Kruger
OOM (UNCLE) PAUL STEPHANUS JOHANNES PAULUS KRUGER
    Youth:
Paul Kruger (Stephanus Johannes Paulus Kruger) was born on October 10 1825
He joined the trek party of Hendrik Potgieter and the family moved to what later became known as Transvaal, to try an establish and independent state.
    Settling in the Transvaal:
At age 16, Paul Kruger was entitled to choose a farm for himself. He chose a farm at the base of the Magaliesberg mountains and settled there in 1841.
In 1842 he married Maria du Plessis wife and infant son died soon after. It is presumed the double death is likely to have been caused by Malaria. Paul Kruger then married Gezina du Plessis, Kruger emerges as leader: strong leadership qualities started emerging. He eventually became Commandant-General of the then South African Republic , later known as Transvaal. His leadership skills became more prominent when he was appointed member of a commission of the Volksraad the Transvaal Republican Parliament who were tasked with drawing up a constitution.

    THREE TREE HILL LODGE
Andrew Ardington, in partnership with legendary Anglo-Zulu war historian David Rattray, has created a lodge that evokes the drama and tragedy of the Anglo-Boer war.
Set on Three Tree Hill, the lodge offers panoramic views of the Spioenkop Battlefield, as well as Spioenkop Nature Reserve, home to white rhino, giraffe, zebra, and a host of smaller mammals and birds. The Idyllic setting belies the tragic events that were to unfold on January 24 1900, when Boer and Brit fought over Spioenkop in the bloodiest battle of the Anglo-Boer war.
With the majestic Drakensberg as backdrop, Andrew, whose grandfather took part in the siege of Ladysmith, introduces guests to the origins and causes of the Anglo-Boer war. On the following day, Andrew takes guests on a tour of the Spioenkop battlefield itself, where he brings to life the tragic events of January 24. With historic figures like Winston Churchill, Louis Botha, and Mohandas Gandhi all featuring in the battle, the story of Spioenkop is a fascinating and moving tale.
In keeping with the historic atmosphere, Three Tree Hill Lodge has been constructed using wood and iron so as to resemble the housing kits brought out from Britain in the nineteenth century. The lodge is stylish and extremely comfortable, with no luxury spared.
