Prince Albert en die Anglo-Boer Oorlog 1899 - 1902/ Prince Albert and the Anglo-Boer War 1899 - 1902 by Helena Marincowitz
The Anglo-Boer War left its mark on communities throughout South Africa. Local historian Helena Marincowitz has traced Prince Albert's Anglo-Boer War stories . Some came from chats with residents in our retirement home - personal reminiscences with their own pathos, and humour. Others were discovered after far-ranging research. They have been gathered into a book - available in English and Afrikaans, which is on sale at the Fransie Pienaar Museum tel: 023 5411 172 and the Tourism Bureau tel: 023 5411 366. Helena's book is well illustrated with photographs from the period and includes a map which indicates two Anglo-Boer War routes , one to the north and the other to the south of Prince Albert. Visitors can follow the steps of the local commando's, see the sites of skirmishes and the graves of those who lost their lives. see the site where five British cannon (Howitsers) were positioned to prevent Boers entering Prince Albert at Scheepersrus (the Kriedouw cheese farm) you can see the old hollow pear tree in which eight captured soldiers’ Martin Henry rifle barrels were bent by the Boers at Remhoogte visit the lonely, unmarked grave of Johannes Klue, the Boer Rebel, who died in February 1901

The start of the Boer Offensive
The Anglo-Boer War began with British territory being invaded by the Boers at four points: in the east into Natal, in the north-west of the Transvaal towards Mafikeng, in the south-west towards Kimberley, and across the Orange river into the Eastern Cape. The invasion routes were directed at railway lines which would be used to bring British troops towards the Boer Republics. When war broke out there were not enough British troops in Southern Africa for an invasion to be expected immediately. A large part of the British army were still at sea, and other divisions were still to be sent to South Africa. Under these circumstances the British army leadership decided that those forces already near the Republics should adopt a defensive stance until reinforcements arrived. When superiority in numbers was achieved, an attack could immediately be launched. The war would then be ended successfully within a few months by subdividing the Boer Republics. In retrospect the best policy for the Boers would have been a blitzkrieg. Their only chance of winning the war was to destroy the relatively small British forces near the Republics. From there they should quickly have invaded the most important port cities in an effort to stop the British reinforcements from landing in South Africa. However, this they failed to do. The Boer forces became bogged down in laying siege to Ladysmith, Kimberley and Mafikeng and in so doing gave the British the opportunity to master superior numbers.

The Siege of the Elandsriver Staging Post
4 - 16 August 1900
You would think that war is about winning and losing. But it is sometimes unclear, even a century later, which side actually won the war - or won the peace that followed. - Thomas Pakenham
  • Historical Overview of the Siege of Elandsriver / Braklaagte Reports on the Centenary Commemoration Historical Overview of the Siege of Elandsriver / Braklaagte Elandsriver / Brakfontein can be seen as the last of the conventional battles and the first in the guerrilla phase of the war. It was also the first of many fought for control of the Pretoria - Rustenburg route. A British garrison under Colonel Charles Owen Hore had been occupying a post at Brakfontein for some weeks. Brakfontein was about to be evacuated and its 505 mainly colonial troops redeployed. The Republican force comprised some 500 men from the Lichtenburg, Marico and Krugersdorp Commandos, commanded by General de la Rey, General Lemmer and Commandant Steenkamp. On the night of August 3 – 4, de la Rey’s forces surrounded the camp and at first light, opened fire on a detail going to water horses. The artillery fire caused carnage among thousands of animals and the stench of rotting carcasses eventually proved as much a discomfort during the 13-day siege as was the persistent Boer shelling and sniping.

The Boer War and the Dreyfus Case
The Situation in South Africa A cartoon which was a forerunner of the Transvaal War and the railway between Capetown and Cairo was that entitled " The Rhodes Colossus ," which appeared in Punch December 10, 1892. It was by the hand of Linley Sambourne. It shows a colossal figure of Cecil Rhodes standing on a map of Africa with one foot planted in Egypt and the other at the Cape. In his hands he holds a line suggesting the telegraph wire connecting the two places.

Although the German Government refused to interfere in the protracted struggle in the Transvaal, the sympathy of Germany with the Boers found expression in a host of cartoons, bitterly inveighing against British aggression. Contact A Survey of Memorials to the Second Anglo-Boer War in the United Kingdom and Eire By : Meurig Jones (This essay was first published in the Journal of the Africana Society, Anglo-Boer War Centenary Issue, No 15 1999. issn 0379-6574) This paper derives from the work of the Anglo-Boer War Memorials Project of which the author is co-ordinator. The Project has been running for the past ten years under the auspices of the Victorian Military Society to record all memorials around the world to the Second Anglo-Boer War, 1899-1902. A written and visual catalogue consisting of photographs, slides, contemporary and modern postcards and even brass rubbings has been amassed with details of over 1100 memorials worldwide. Central to this work is the recording of the names listed on memorials. Over 17000 names are recorded on computer and cross-referenced with the official casualty rolls and other sources. The result is a unique archive with a wealth of material for military, social, family and art historians. What follows is a report on work in progress concentrating on the memorials in the United Kingdom and Eire, of which there are 971 on record. Introduction In 1899 Britain was at the height of empire. An unprecedented 60 years of economic, military and material expansion resulted in a tiny nation island laying claim to three-quarters of the globe, and ruling much of that. Empire brought with it a vast increase in personnel wealth. The majority of the population were better off in 1899 than in 1799 and for the few, there were vast fortunes amassed from overseas ventures. Given that over 1000 memorials were erected in the United Kingdom and Eire it is clear that very many people had or earnt sufficient money to give some towards a memorial fund.

The Russians and the Anglo-Boer War
by Apollon Davidson and Irina Filatova
Published by: Human and Rousseau/Combined Book Services 287 pp. £17.99
When we were at school 70 years ago, a quarter of the World's map was coloured red to denote the territories of the British Empire on which the sun never set. Britain did not acquire this largest Empire in history by chance, or by mere luck, Britain fought its way at every turn in the face of jealous rivals such as Russia, France, Spain and Germany. Even when transport was slow and the motorcar and aeroplane were not yet in service, Britain could despatch half a million troops to South Africa to protect the long route to India via the Cape. Jews played a major part in Britain's ascendancy in the 19th Century. Benjamin Disraeli whose family were members of the Sephardi Bevis Marks Synagogue, acquired the shares of the Suez Canal with the help of the Rothschilds and he made Victoria Empress of India.
