Country Info Angola Introduction Angola General Data Angola Maps Angola Culture ... Angola Time and Date Angola History Back to Top Angola is that the Stone Age hunters and gatherers of the region were displaced by metalworking Bantu as early as the 7th century ad. The country was on the migration routes of peoples from the north and east, which resulted in considerable mixture of populations. Thus, the culture of the Lunda, on the Kasai River in the east, affected the Chokwe to the extent that they are now known as the Lunda-Chokwe. When the Portuguese arrived in 1483, seeking the legendary kingdom of Prester John, as well as precious metals, they found the realm of the Bakongo well established. The ruler of the state welcomed the newcomers, and in 1491 Portuguese traders and missionaries bearing gifts were sent to the court of Manikongo (king) Nzinga Nkuwu, who converted to Christianity. Also converting was the succeeding manikongo, Afonso I, who also accepted Portuguese guidance in the administration of his realm. The nationalists, however, were split into three rival groups: the National Front for the Liberation of Angola (Frente Nacional de Libertação de Angola, or FNLA), the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (Movimento Popular de Libertação de Angola, or MPLA), and the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (União Nacional para a Independência Total de Angola, or UNITA). All three had armed forces in the field, but none made much headway until the revolution in Portugal in April 1974 (see Portugal: History). After that, the whole Portuguese colonial empire began to fall apart.

Basketball The Nairobi University Games earned Angola a bronze medal in men's basketball and, in retrospect, can be considered as the take-off point for Angolan athletics. The jersey colors worn by Angolan athletes were rapidly becoming more recognizable not only in Africa, but throughout the sporting world. That same year, the men's basketball team ascended to the highest competitive ranks at the IX All-African Championships, held in Rabat. Coached by Mario Palma, the Angolan squad had a modest debut, finishing third from last. Within two years, at the All-African Games in Maputo, the junior men's basketball team captured the gold medal, winning in a fashion that seemed to presage a decidedly golden future for Angolan basketball. These hopes were soon doused when, at the X All-African Championships in Mogadishu, the national team, under Coach Vitorino Cunha, finished dead-last in the tournament. By 1981, the popularity of basketball, in particular, sparked an upsurge of participation; almost overnight, baskets and backboards sprung up at every street- corner, henceforth converted into roundball courts. Exactly four years after securing its first medal in basketball, the Angolan National Team shocked those present at Alexandria's XI All-African Championships with skilful play that vanquished mighty Senegal and earned it a silver medal, bested only by the host Egyptians. It was the beginning of a "show" by the best generation of Angolan players ever, who were later crowned with three All-African titles.

Angolan Art Gallery Visitors to Angola can view and purchase Angolan art pieces at the numerous art galleries that are becoming more and more commonplace in Luanda. They include: Humbi-Humbi : The first art gallery in Luanda, it is located at Largo Rainha Ginga, 31
Cenarius : This gallery is also a cafe and a bar at night. Located behind the Ministry of Defense, it is open from 4:00 p.m. until late in the evening.
Ellinga : A cultural center with a small gallery that sometimes will carry exhibitions of foreign artists. It is located at Largo Tristao da Cunha
Espelho da Moda : Here local artists sell their work. Closer to a handicraft center than a true gallery, it has a large selection of Angolan art. It is located at Rua Sequeira Lukoki, 63.
Hotel Le Presidente Meridien : Located on the Marginal, the Hotel often hosts exhibitions of various local artists. (Note: When buying art in Angola, you must have an export permit. The permit can be obtained at the Ministry of Culture at Rua Major Kanhangulo, 77. Also note that it is illegal to take ivory into most European countries and the US unless you have a certificate.) For those who cannot visit, we present the virtual Angolan art gallery

http://www.angola.org/culture/sports/hand.htm
Team Handball In team handball competition, the women's squad has also earned three African Championships for Angola. Deprived of the spotlight and glamour accorded international basketball, the women made their debut in rather unsteady fashion, squandering their first big chance, in Luanda, at the 1985 All-African Championships, with a disappointing fifth-place finish. The next two years, however, witnessed the onset of the "true" history about to be written in this endeavor, starting with the win earned by "Ferroviário de Angola" women's team in the African Champions Cup, held in Owerri, Nigeria. The accomplishments of the national women's squad, under Coach Alberto Ferreira, are especially significant in light of the fact that none of their titles benefitted from the home-court advantage. Each was earned on foreign soil, which, given the immensely biased officiating currently prevalent throughout Africa, makes it a feat truly worthy of respect. Who cares about the extreme and protracted suffering of the Angolan people? Who looks at the conflict beyond asking who is right or wrong? Who is the lesser devil, MPLA or UNITA? Both Jonas Savimbi (left) and president José Eduardo dos Santos(right) are at fault with the Angolan people. Angolan civil society has been denied the right to exist for many years, rendering it too weak to stand up to the MPLA and UNITA. The denial of a voice for the Angolan people has been underpinned by various international attempts to mediate. All the Peace Agreements, from Alvor (Portugal), in 1974, to Lusaka, in 1994, were negotiated only by those parties that had major economic and political stakes in the conflict.

Art and Culture of Angola As with most African art, the wooden masks and sculptures of Angola are not merely aesthetic creations. They play an important role in cultural rituals, representing life and death, the passage from childhood to adulthood, the celebration of a new harvest and the marking of the hunting season. Angolan artisans work in wood, bronze, ivory, malachite or ceramic mediums. Each ethno-linguistic group in Angola has its own unique artistic traits. Perhaps the single most famous piece of Angolan art is the Cokwe thinker, a masterpiece of harmony and symmetry of line. The Lunda-Cokwe in the north eastern part of Angola are also known for their superior plastic arts.
Other signature pieces of Angolan art include: The female mask Mwnaa-Pwo worn by male dancers in their puberty rituals. polychromatic Kalelwa masks used during circumcision ceremonies Cikungu and Cihongo masks which conjure up the images of the Lunda-Cokwe mythology. Two key figures in this pantheon are princess Lweji and the civilizing prince Tschibinda-Ilunga. the black ceramic art of Moxico of central/eastern Angola Prior to the late 1980s, all marketing of handicrafts were under the control of Artiang, an arm of the Ministry of Culture. However once this commercial monopoly over the production of art was removed, art in Angola blossomed. As the wooden masks and statues of Africa have grown in popularity in the West, the handicraft industry in Angola has sought to meet the demand for African art. The stylized masks and trinkets that are created to catch a tourist's eye are commonly known as "airport art." They are pieces produced in series, to the taste of the average tourist, but lack any real link to the deeper cultural undercurrents of the people.
