  • Background and development
  • In May 1995 UNICEF Angola asked Norwegian Refugee Council for the secondment of an education expert to give technical advice on the development of a rapid response programme for education. The agency had been distributing boxes of teaching aids and equipment, but there was no resource material or guidelines for teacher training, nor for the teaching of basic reading, writing and mathematics. In order to consider the possible use of the UNESCO-PEER programme called Teacher Emergency Package, TEP, a feasibility study was undertaken by the expert. It was recommended to UNICEF to seek co-operation with UNESCO-PEER and UNHCR. The latter initially asked NRC to undertake emergency education projects in the provinces of Uige, Zaire and Moxico. The Angolan Ministry of Education agreed to mandate three of their experienced staff, to working on the adaptation of a TEP for Angola. I.1 Development of a TEP for Angola

Mommy, where do capoeiristas come from?
C apoeira is a Brazilian martial-art. It is not clear whether the art form originated in the "senzalas" (African-Brazilian slave quarters), or whether the art was merely being practiced in Brazil as it was back in Africa. Either way, capoeira is of African root, and it is notable distinctly through the rituals and movements of capoeira, which mirror those of certain African tribes. During the 17th century these slaves formed "quilombos," in resistance to slavery. This came about after the Portuguese founders in Brazil had a dispute with Dutch founders, which weakened the structure of order within the Portuguese colonies and contributed to runaway slaves. The quilombos were inhabited in large part by these runaway slaves, and they practiced in the art of capoeira for mental, physical and combative training. Of these quilombos, the "Quilombo dos Palmares" was the most noted. It consisted of escaped slaves, as well as individuals of other non-white races of Brazil. Palmares had its own governmental establishment, with a king at the head. The most celebrated of quilombo kings is King Zumbi. Zumbi is a capoeira legend and a strong symbol of freedom. Zumbi fought on the battlefield for freedom against his oppressors and died at their hands in 1665, a year after Quilombo dos Palmares was destroyed. Thus, his name lives on in our songs and in the spirit of capoeira.

Form and Function in Historical Context: Capoeira Angola The game, much like the music, may be soft or hard, friendly or aggressive, fast of slow, or a combination of all of the above. Played with a smile on the face which hides the tricks of the mind, Capoeira is a flourish of cartwheels, handstands, flips and other movements which belie description. Jorge Amado, noted Brazilian artisan, called Capoeira the 'Dance of the Warrior' or 'War Dance', a beautiful and rhythmic display of the African Aesthetic principle that wit and flexibility are more beautiful than brute force and aggression. There are currently two major forms of Capoeira in vogue. There si the original, designated as Capoeira Angola, of which Grandmestre Pastinha is recognized as the major figure; then there is Capoeira Regional and its offshoots, of which Grandmestre Bimba (who was originallytaughtt the Angola), is generally recognized as the creator. The top practitioners of Capoeira Angola now are recognized to be Grandmestre Joao Pequeno,Grandmestre Joao Grande, Mestre Pedro Trindade Moraes, Mestre Cobra Mansa; Grandmestre Pequeno and Grandmestre Grande are famed as top students of Grandmestre Pastinha; Master Moraes the top student of Mestre, and Mestre Cobra Mansa the top student of Mestre Moraes. Mestre Cobra has formed his own organization the ICAF. Contra Mestre Valmir is Vice President of this organization. A Short History of Prof. Cooper and Capoeira

The size and scope of 'Back to School' "underlines the fact that education is being unswervingly endorsed as the engine to drive Angola's long-term recovery" after three decades of civil war, UNICEF said in a statement. In partnership with the Ministry of Education and Culture, a UNICEF campaign is this month helping to train 4,000 new teachers, restore 1,300 classrooms, and prepare thousands of education kits to be supplied to children and teachers in the central Angolan provinces of Bie and Malanje - the launch sites of the programme.

History Capoeira During the 1500's, when slavery was still very much alive, hundreds, of what later became thousands and ultimately millions, of men and women were kidnapped from their homes in Africa. Shackled and starved, they were shipped to colonial Brasil, where upon arrival, they would be sold as slaves. Having become mere property, the Africans were forced to leave behind their former ways and adapt to this new, imposed way of life. Inspite of this, they did succeed in holding onto certain elements of their cultures; some of which, came to form the art of Capoeira.
Abuse, the most prominent characteristic of slavery, was not at all lacking in the plantations of early Brasil. Through abusing and raping their slaves, the slavemasters pushed the Africans to the point of revolution. Many escaped from their " Senzalas " (slave quarters), into the heavily forested areas, to form their own communities. These solely African communities came to be known as, " Quilombos ". It was inside the Quilombos that the Africans began to develop a way to defend themselves from their, " Capitaes do Mato " (men who were paid to hunt down escaped slaves). A form of guerrilla warfare was used by the escaped slaves. They would utilize the forests ample greenery, taking cover until they met with the most opportune time to jump out and ambush their hunters. This is how many of their battles were won. Of all the Quilombos, the most renowned was the, "

    History of Angola
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. This is the History of Angola . See also the History of Africa and History of present-day nations and states As early as 1,000 years ago, Angola was inhabited by peoples speaking Bantu languages, engaged in agriculture with iron tools and trade over long distances. States in the area included the Kongo kingdom and Mbundu kingdoms inland from Luanda In 1482, when the Portuguese first landed in what is now northern Angola, they encountered the Kingdom of the Congo, which stretched from modern Gabon in the north to the Kwanza River in the south.

Notes on the history of Capoeira Angola Where does Capoeira Angola come from? Ladainha a capoeirista answers the question about his master: "Meu mestre foi Salomao..." And after he has finished telling of his prowess he says at the end of the song:
    Eu nasci foi na Bahia
    Na Bahia eu me criei
    Vou lutar por essa Terra
    Nessa Terra eu morrerei
(Source: Academia Jangada) So, wherever a capoeirista is born is where he grows up. He must have learned the art of capoeira in whichever country for which he is prepared to fight and where he would like to die. So does capoeira, as in the song, come from Bahia, in northwest Brazil? Another ladainha seems to confirm this, singing of Bahia, capital city Salvador, and capoeira in the opening lines. Bahia, nossa Bahia
    Capital é Salvador
    Quem nao conhece a Capoeira
Nao sabe dar o seu valor...
(Source: Academia Jangada Then, in the next lines, the ladainha seems to answer the question about capoeira's origin once and for all: Capoeira veio da Africa
    Africano que nos trouxe
(Source: Academia Jangada) Africans brought capoeira to Brazil, so capoeira comes from Africa. It is clear that these Africans were slaves, as heard in the texts of many other songs, telling, for example, of an unknown black man who could be a slave, in another song of a mistress' nego who costed hard-earned money and who taught mandinga. So this far we know from the songs that the art of capoeira comes from African slaves. Another song leads us to speculate that capoeira, if not originating from Angola, definitely existed there. It was practiced by Angolan slaves, since this song speaks not merely of capoeira, rather specifically of "Capoeira Angola". In this song a woman is mourning her husband, who went to the harbor to "play Capoeira Angola":
