http://www.capoeirasj.com/whatis/
@import "/stylesheets/general.css"; THE BASICS Capoeira was created by African slaves, in Brazil, approximately 400 yrs. ago as a martial art. Capoeira possesses a very unique style that brings together beauty and power, developing mental balance, physical conditioning, self-defense, music and a profound sense of art, all at once. Capoeira can be done by anyone of any age or size. More than a martial art, Capoeira is also a social event filled with tradition and history. The one thing that stands out for someone witnessing a Capoeira game for the first time is the music. The music and lyrics play a big part in the way the game or jogo (jo-go) will be conducted. Different rythms call for a different speed and type of game. The lyrics which are traditionally in Brazilian Portuguese, also dictate game characteristics. The next thing that strikes observers about Capoeira is that the movements of the players are very different from any other type of martial art. A circle or roda (ho-da) is formed with the muscicians at the foot of it known as the pe da roda. This is where the players usually enter the roda with a cartwheel or some other type of move. Once in the roda the players (Capoeiristas) move and interact/react in various combinations of acrobatic and poetic moves. Capoeira has two forms, Angola (an-goal-la) and Regional (hey-zion-nal). Angola is the original form. Regional was developed much later. Angola is a much slower, lower and calculated game then Regional. It is important to note that the following information provided here is only to give a general overview of some of the differences between Angola and Regional. Many teachings and groups vary in their practices so styles, protocol and group dynamics may mix or vary completely!

Outbreak of Poliomyelitis Angola, 1999
On March 23, 1999, the Pediatric Hospital in Luanda, Angola, reported 21 cases (three deaths) of acute flaccid paralysis (AFP). By April 3, 102 AFP cases had been reported in Luanda and neighboring areas of Bengo province. A preliminary investigation by the Ministry of Health (MOH) indicated that these cases primarily occurred among children aged less than 5 years; 90% had received two or fewer doses of oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV), 4% had received three doses, and 6% had received four doses. Many case-patients resided in overcrowded municipalities where families displaced by civil war had settled. On the basis of preliminary data, MOH suspected the outbreak was poliomyelitis and began planning a vaccination campaign to control the epidemic. Surveillance was strengthened to identify and rapidly investigate reports of AFP cases to determine the extent of the outbreak. On April 8, the National Institute of Virology in South Africa isolated wild poliovirus type 3 from 11 (50%) of 22 stool specimens from AFP cases submitted by MOH. By April 11, the number of AFP cases increased to 276 (19 deaths). By April 25, 634 AFP cases (39 deaths) were reported. Field investigations confirmed two cases of AFP in children aged less than 5 years in Benguela, a city approximately 300 miles (480 km) south of Luanda. On April 17 and 18, a mass vaccination campaign was carried out targeting 526,036 children. OPV was administered to 634,368 children aged less than 5 years in Luanda and the rest of the province. A World Health Organization (WHO) team is assisting with the investigation of the outbreak. Three rounds of National Immunization Days (NIDs) * at monthly intervals are planned to begin in July.

Argentina: 5 Presidents in two weeks, a history of mismanagement
Eduardo Duhalde, curiously, is chosen to terminate the Presidency of Fernando de la Rua, who beat him in the Presidential elections of 1999. However, whether or not he finishes the mandate until 2003 is a question which will be solved by how the country’s economy reacts and how adept he is at convincing the population to let him try.
With a debt to foreign banks of 150 billion USD, more than half the country’s GDP, President Duhalde has a monumental task on his hands. Unemployment is soaring at 20%, salaries of civil servants have been slashed and pensions reduced by 13.5%. This was the legacy of Fernando de la Rua, who escaped from the Presidential Palace by helicopter on 20th December, after announcing his resignation. This at least was a change from the motorcades of luxurious limousines in which he was habituated to dashing through the streets of Buenos Aires before coming home to his adored collection of bonsai trees. De la Rua, however, had inherited a deplorable economic situation from Menem.
A desperate measure introduced by Duhalde’s predecessor to control an economy spinning out of control was to confiscate part of the savings of the citizens, who were impeded from withdrawing their money from the banks. These austere measures were translated into a miserable Christmas for a large part of the population, who call for direct elections to choose the next President.

Home About Programmes Affiliates ... Facilitating Bilateral Support Promoting land reform through rural development across the region and beyond THE NLC’S REGIONAL PROGRAMME
The Regional Programme of the NLC consists of its participation in the Southern African Network on Land (SANL ), an exciting new regional umbrella network of civil society organisations working for land reform and rural development in their countries. The NLC’s regional work — like its growing engagement with land sector organisations across the world — is rooted in the belief that international solidarity among poor and landless people and their organisations is necessary in the struggle against the effects of globalisation on the rural poor in Africa and other developing regions. Rural people in the entire Southern African region are still struggling against the brutal effects of colonialism and apartheid, which deprived people in many countries of both land and development resources. The NLC, as a leading land reform civil society role-player in the region, is the Secretariat of SANL, and regards this as an essential initiative in this era of intensifying land struggles. BRIEF HISTORY
SANL has its roots in the Regional Conference on Land, Labour and Food Security in Southern Africa

Brazil's Black Guerrillas
After the abolition of slavery in Brazil, well up into the 1930's, there
were protests against capoeira by politicians and intellectuals. For some

those days can be compared to a guerrilla movement.
Jihan Abdalla Vanquished somewhere within the eye of the storm, and the salt of the ocean so carelessly smeared in with the sweat of slave labor, dissolved into the desperate pounding waves that never reached the shore of freedom lies the origins of capoeira . The facts will remain between the sealed lips of lost souls, who share the same secret of the mysterious force responsible for the wind, for all of eternity. How could something so brutal, inhumane, and poignant be so easily dismissed in the wake of the fire? Capoeira among so many other cultural entities did not burn to death! Capoeira is a resistance to slavery that survived just like its people did, and its vibrancy is an endowment to today's Afro-Brazilian Culture. There are many theories concerning the origins of capoeira . The most controversial issue being whether capoeira already existed in Africa, or was it invented by the African slaves after their arrival in Brazil. Due to the burning of the slave records and other factors, unfortunately there is little written history of

February 2002 The following provides a brief summary of the original detailed proposal distributed to interested parties in July 2000, prior to the commencement of Geotrack's West African study. With sufficient support, the study commenced in October 2000, and the final of three volumes was completed in September 2001. The success of the study is a testament to the unique and valuable information available from AFTA on this margin. The final study differs somewhat from the original proposal. Notably, more than 250 AFTA analyses were performed, significantly greater than originally proposed. Two successful field excursions were undertaken exclusively for this study. The study is heavily data intensive allowing a firm platform from which new concepts and new models for the tectonics, uplift, maturation and sediment-supply histories can be evaluated and developed. Furthermore, the study contains an organic petrography report, with valuable discussion about widespread problems in this region when using conventional techniques to evaluate maturity. The study fundamentally relies on Thermal History Reconstruction (THR) which is an approach developed by Geotrack International to better understand basin development and sediment supply. The following summary of the original proposal outlines the main objectives of the study. For the original detailed proposal, or more detail on the final results and scope of the current study, we suggest you contact us for this information (Kerry Hegarty at

COSAFA CASTLE CUP HISTORY
This year marks the seventh year of the Cosafa Castle Cup and again brings with it the excitement and anticipation of yet another round of the regional challenge. Since 1997, the tournament has kept the southern African region on the edge of their seats as the members of the Council for Southern African Football Association have battled it out to prove their supremacy. Four countries have already been able to win the trophy and add a major international title to their list of accomplishments. The Cosafa Castle Cup certainly now enjoys a wide profile, well beyond the borders of its member countries. Live television coverage, unprecedented for a competition of this nature, takes the event into the homes of people right throughout Africa and also into Europe and South America. The tournament is one of a kind on the international calendar, given that no other regional event can boast a longevity or as wide a reach as the Cosafa Castle Cup.

http://members.aol.com/stingluva/History.html
History and Traditions Home Special Events and News Our Class Help for Beginners ... Links Mail me at: @yahoo.com A Brief History of Capoeira regional, and partially because of a very cool nationalistic Brazilian guy named Getulio Vargas who made efforts to make capoeira a national sport, Bimba opened the first capoeira school in 1932 in Salvador. Capoeira is now a very big part of Brazilian culture and a source of great pride for Brazilians. Man, couldn't anyone have figured out how cool capoeira is about 400 years ago? (sigh) Since this site focuses on capoeira regional, let's learn a bit about this type of capoeira. The main differences between capoeira regional and angola are that regional is played more upright, and is played to a faster rhythm. Angola is played more slowly and closer to the ground. Both are a lot of fun and worth learning, so if you can only find a group that practices one type of capoeira, don't be disappointed! Anyway, as I said, regional was created by a very cool guy named Manuel dos Reis Machado a.k.a. Mestre Bimba. He was born in 1900 and unfortunately for us he died in 1974, but it wouldn't be fair to keep him alive forever just so we could all ooh and aah. Besides, he left us his capoeira style and we capoeiristas are all his mythical descendants! (We got connectiooooons!) Now, we learn capoeira from a guy like this:
