Common Names:
American eel. Identification: Becker (1983); Page and Burr (1991); Etnier and Starnes (1993); McCosker (1989) presented a key to several Anguilla , including this species. Native Range: Marine, estuarine, and fresh water. Spawns in the Atlantic Ocean in the Sargasso Sea and ascends streams in North and South America. Atlantic, Great Lakes, Mississippi, and Gulf basins from Newfoundland to South Dakota and south to South America (Page and Burr 1991). Size: 152 cm. Nonindigenous Occurrences: This species has been recorded from Lake Mead on the Colorado River, on the Arizona border (Minckley 1973). It was stocked on several occasions in Sacramento and San Francisco bays, California , in the late 1800s, apparently with no evidence of survival (Smith 1896; Shebley 1917; Shapovalov et al. 1981; McCosker 1989). A total of 13 specimens were collected in the San Francisco area during the period 1978 to 1984 (McCosker 1989; Williamson and Tabeta 1991). Specimens have been reported from the San Luis Valley, Conejos County, Colorado , where they escaped from an aquaculture facility (Zuckerman and Behnke 1986). Eels were stocked in the Calumet River south of Chicago

The Arawak Indians
Centuries before the colonizers of the New World during the fifteenth century, the Lokono (Arawak) people lived along the of the vast continent of South America as well as some of the larger islands of the Caribbean area. Today, although the Lokono number but a few thousand, glimpses of their rich and diverse culture are revealed to our world through artifacts unearthed such as pottery basketry and even petroglyph drawings left behind as the signature of these master artists and craftsmen. Artist Adam Azaire contributes to the preservation of this heritage.
Adam Azaire (Anakhuda Hororo)
Azaire: My work comprises hand built and wheel thrown forms as well as castware. I am Amerindian, native "Lokono" of Guyana, South America. On my pieces I use the traditional pottery and basket motifs of the Amerindians of my native Guyana and, in addition, I also use the Amerindian petroglyph motifs of the Caribbean area, in particular those found in St. Lucia and St. Vincent. In my work I endeavour to combine traditional designs and forms and contemporary techniques and practices as my way of celebrating the timeless uniqueness and rich diversity of Amerindian culture. I like to think that I am "a Lokono potter" in the traditional sense. The difference for me is this: I use the motifs and forms which my people have used for centuries but I have been formally trained in an Art School environment and, as such, my work, in some ways reflects my exposure to non-traditional techniques and ideas. I was also trained as an industrial ceramist and this also influences my work. I think that I am fortunate to have these "trappings". I also have at my disposal a pool of techniques and inventions which are, in many instances, unique to our time and era. I have the best of two worlds.

interesting adventure, nice snapshots of island life and culture
Cons
somewhat annoying attitude The Bottom Line Life on a tropical paradise is hindered by authors' weird attitudes toward their new culture. Full Review To be honest, tropical island vacations aren't really at the top of my list. I love the ocean, but don't usually care to appear in public wearing a bathing suit, nor do I usually like going above my waist into the water. There's only so much sitting around and relaxing I can do on vacation, and I hate sunbathing. Chances are, I'd never in a million years opt to live in such a place, but this is exactly what Melinda and Robert Blanchard decided to do, and they decided to write a travelogue about it. We're going to Anguilla!

INTRODUCTION CHILD FOCUS/TVET MODEL (Jamaica) IMPLEMENTING THE NCTVET MODEL - ... IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTITIONERS
INTRODUCTION One of the goals of outlined in the Caribbean Plan of Action was to “ integrate training based on vocational routes to qualifications and on paths that can achieve teacher status This goal was deemed necessary because of the low level of human resource skills available to the sector. This situation was the result of three (3) factors: “Child care has been slow to be recognized as an occupation per se as a professional choice requiring a body of knowledge and a set of skills that are (or should be) seamless with the clearly recognised role of the educator of children within the formal school system. Childcare was generally regarded as an "instinctive" and cultural response to the realities of biological and social reproduction, extending to other caregivers the assumed attributes of "natural" mothering, learned informally from older and wiser heads within the community. Clearly thus a female activity, caregiving was accorded the lower status given to most female employment in the labour force

Part I : Descriptive Section INTRODUCTION The Government of Anguilla perceives education as one of the most important vehicles through which a nation achieves economic and social development. It perceives education as an essential ingredient for enhancing the quality of life for the people of Anguilla, for developing and sustaining their personal growth and self-realization, and for achieving economic and social well being. This perception of the importance of education is based on the belief that all human beings have a right to education, an education that will help them to be productive members of society as well as to be enlightened enough to enjoy the benefits of society. i Provide all citizens of Anguilla with opportunities for acquiring knowledge, skills, attitudes and values for meaningful participation in nation development and a satisfying adult life; ii Develop a sense of self respect, self worth, self esteem, and a spirit of self reliance; iii Acquire the capacity for critical thinking, problem solving and decision-making;

Web Workers www.anguillaguide.com
If there is one statistic that defines the power of the Internet, it’s this: every day over 1 billion users hit on a web site somewhere in cyberspace. The Internet has infiltrated everyday life with users relying on the vast amount of research and information content available, and many turn to the Internet as a basic reference tool.
With that in mind, to stay on top, each web site needs a stream of new ideas and content, which is what makes viewers come back for more. It also needs the technology that guides the major search engines to register that site prominently for web surfers. What all this techno-jargon really means is, if you got it, they’ll find you.
The Anguilla Guide (www.anguillaguide.com) has it, and that is what brings viewers back for more. With a visitor rate of over 800 per day and an average of 5000 pageviews per day, the Anguilla Guide has become a tremendous resource for reliable information on Anguilla, for both potential visitors and on-island residents.

Isle of Wight Trip, 2002
Primary School students who participated in the exchange trip to Isle of Wight, UK, wrote the following diary of their trip:
Friday, 21st June, was a day we will always remember. It was the day we left our homeland, Anguilla, to visit the Isle of Wight, a land we have never seen before. Along with fourteen other specially selected pupils, we were very excited to begin our journey. We met at Blowing Point, took the ferry to Princess Juliana Airport to wait for our flight to Paris. We checked our baggage and waited for several hours playing games, cards, and some children went to look at the shops and to eat. We all spoke to each other a lot because we were very excited. We finally boarded the plane to France. This was a very long journey and most of us had never travelled for such a long time on a plane. We had a meal, played video games. Some of the children went to sleep, but not us. The flight attendants were friendly and nice. I was glad that we landed safely in France but I enjoyed seeing the airport, which had a lot of shops. I was tired by then but I did not sleep because I wanted to see everything. From France, we took a plane to London and met Teacher John Hilsum who took us to a huge bus. We were all very tired but we had not finished our journey as yet. The coach took us to the ferry crossing. We missed the ferry so we went to get a snack to eat. We also visited an amusement park where we took some thrilling rides. Eventually we got on the ferry, which took us to the Isle of Wight. When we got off the ferry we took another coach, which took us to the East Dene Center, our residence for the week.
