Agency Overview
The Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) was founded in 1893 with a mission to address the Texas fever tick problem. Today, TAHC works to protect the health of all Texas livestock, including:
  • cattle swine poultry sheep goats equine family animals exotic livestock
TAHC also works to keep pests from reoccurring as major livestock health hazards. Ultimately, the TAHC mission and role is the assurance of marketability and mobility of Texas livestock. TAHC works to sustain and continue to make a vital contribution to a wholesome and abundant supply of meat, eggs, and dairy products at affordable costs. The Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) has legislative authority to make and enforce regulations to prevent, control, and eradicate specific infectious animal diseases which endanger livestock. TAHC regulations are made and adopted by 12 governor-appointed commissioners who serve staggered six-year terms. The commissioners meet as needed to study the regulatory needs of the agency, review public comments on proposed regulation changes, and adopt new rules when necessary.

02:00 AM Apr. 01, 2002 PT AUCKLAND, New Zealand With about 45 million sheep and only 5 million people, New Zealanders hear their fair share of sheep jokes. When it comes to biotechnology and sheep, however, New Zealanders are laughing all the way to the bank. Because New Zealand doesn't have any major animal diseases, the country is a great petri dish for animal-related biotechnology experiments and, given this far-flung country, a competitive advantage in certain areas of research.

Avian immune system Published on the Web by the University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS), this factsheet was written in 1991 by 2 IFAS poultry specialists, Dr. Gary Butcher and Dr. Richard Miles, and was reviewed in 1995. This document provides an overview of the avian immune system covering both specific and non-specific immune mechanisms. The immune system is an important method of preventing disease and ensuring maximum production, and by outlining the mechanisms of the immune system, this document aims to help poultry farmers design suitable health programmes. The factsheet covers immunity, the immune response, and the role of antibodies in the avian immune system. This document is also available in PDF format and can be viewed using Adobe Acrobat Reader. antibodies immune response immune system immunity ... The book covers the importance of diseases, the role of surveillance in disease prevention and control, awareness creation among decision- makers, and FAO involvement in surveillance and information systems development. dietary fat By Susan Harrow Rago, RD, MS Dietary fat is the fat that is found in food. Fat is one of four substances in food that provide calories. The other three are carbohydrate protein, and alcohol. There are three types of natural fats found in foods. These are monounsaturated, polyunsaturated, and saturated fats . Most foods contain all three fats in different amounts. The body can use all three types of fat. Dietary fat has very important functions in the body. Only a moderate amount of fat is needed for good health. Too much fat or the wrong type of fat can be harmful. A healthy diet should have more unsaturated fat than saturated fat. Fat is the most concentrated source of calories. It provides 9 calories per gram. Carbohydrate and protein provide 4 calories per gram. Alcohol provides 7 calories per gram. So any type of fat should be used sparingly in the diet. In what food source is the nutrient found? Dietary fat is found in most animal foods such as meat and dairy products and in oils, salad dressings, and mayonnaise. Bakery products, fried foods, some gravies and sauces, and most highly processed foods also contain fat. Fat takes longer to leave the stomach than either carbohydrate or protein,

ANTHRAX
Anthrax is one of the oldest diseases known to humankind. It is caused by a bacterium, Bacillus anthracis . The disease in livestock is usually fatal in cattle, sheep, goats and horses. While swine and dogs are more resistant to the acute disease causing death, they are known to develop extensive swelling in the neck area. Disease outbreaks have occurred in specific wildlife groups such as bison in Wood Buffalo National Park. Anthrax bacteria grow in anaerobic conditions (lack of oxygen) and have the ability to form spores when exposed to air and warm temperatures. The opening of a carcass or discharges from infected animals can induce spore formation. The spores are very resistant to destruction and may survive for extremely long periods of time. Depending on local conditions, anthrax spores can survive for years in soil and water. They can also be transported by the wool, hides, or other products from infected animals. Once anthrax has occurred in an area, the possibility that it will recur under the right environmental conditions remains. While it is possible to transmit anthrax from animal to animal, most cases of anthrax are related to exposure to spores from previous outbreaks reverting to the bacterial phase through environmental changes, such as erosion or flooding.

Animal Health Hazards of Concern During Natural Disasters The objective of this paper is to describe some of the major natural disasters that have occurred in the U.S. during recent years and to review some infectious and non-infectious hazards that, at the very least, are perceived to be related directly to natural disasters. The number and types of natural disasters, the basic ecology and epidemiology of several infectious hazards that are thought to be affected by the climatic and environmental changes during natural disasters, and the impact of natural disasters on some non-infectious hazards of animals are presented.
