Key Points:
  • Bovine somatotropin has no effect on the efficiency of nutrient utilization. Managers who encourage maximum dry matter intake are expected to profit maximally from use of POSILAC and will experience higher overall milk production. Dry matter intake of cows supplemented with POSILAC will increase sufficiently to support increased milk production. Responses to POSILAC are greatest when quality feed is available for consumption at least 20 hours a day.
Nutrition requirements of cows supplemented with POSILAC are the same as that of nonsupplemented cows producing at similar levels. Controlled studies have demonstrated that supplementation with bovine somatotropin does not change nutrient requirements per unit of milk produced nor does it change the digestion characteristics of the diet. Therefore, the ration balance required for cows supplemented with POSILAC bovine somatotropin will depend on body weight and milk production just as it does in nonsupplemented cows. Controlled studies demonstrate that bovine somatotropin has no effect on the efficiency of nutrient utilization. Nutrients are directed away from other body tissues toward the mammary gland.

MINERAL NUTRITION AND ANIMAL HEALTH I t is our observation after 40 years of extensive work in the cattle industry that minerals and their role for the health, welfare and performance of the cow, calf and bull are the least known, least talked about and the most misunderstood management practice in the cattle industry today and are the most important health and performance tool that cattlemen today can use. The major part of the health problems that continually rob the American beef and dairy cattleman can be easily solved at the mineral trough. R eproduction is one of the major problems that we have experienced most that is directly tied to mineral intake. What cattleman has not experienced problems with open cows; cystic ovaries; retained placentas; misshapen ovaries; poor fertilization of eggs; erratic, weak, silent or no heat cycles; delayed conceptions and abortions; poor quality semen in bulls. Most American cattlemen experiences one or many of the above problems and should be asking the question...WHY? The answer is in the mineral trough. No medication will replace mineral nutrition. T he second problem that takes profit from the American cattleman is the poor health of calves. What cattleman has not experienced problems with ecoli scouring in baby calves; calves born dead because of the silent killer white muscle disease; calves that are born weak, lethargic and often unable to stand and suckle; navel ill where the navel cord severs smooth with no string hanging; front feet turned back at risk; reduced growth rate; reduced immune response which is apparent with the appearance of pneumonia and other respiratory problems. Most American cattleman experiences one or many of the above problems and should be asking the question... WHY? The answer is in the mineral trough.

Search Health experts for years have been telling us to eat more plant foods and less fat, especially saturated fat, which is found in larger amounts in animal foods than plant foods. To be healthful, vegetarian diets require very careful, proper planning.
Vegetarians who abstain from dairy products or animal flesh face the greatest nutritional risks because some nutrients naturally occur mainly or almost exclusively in animal foods. Vegetarian Varieties
The Institute of Food Technologists, in the July 1991 issue of its journal, Food Technology, describes six types of vegetarians. They are listed here by degree of exclusion of animal foods and by the foods included in the diet:
  • semi-vegetarian—dairy foods, eggs, chicken, and fish, but no other animal flesh pesco-vegetarian—dairy foods, eggs, and fish, but no other animal flesh lacto-ovo-vegetarian—dairy foods and eggs, but no animal flesh lacto-vegetarian—dairy foods, but no animal flesh or eggs ovo-vegetarian—eggs, but no dairy foods or animal flesh

A newly revised comprehensive book on cat and dog nutrition contains more than just a cosmetic makeover. It looks at current nutritional fads and fallacies, and provides a road map for choosing food. It also considers the nutrient needs of neonatal puppies and kittens and such issues as diet and dental health and nutritional needs of pets with cancer. "Living with companion animals has become a national pastime, and taking care of dogs and cats is of great interest and concern to the many pet owners and professionals who work with these animals," said co-author Linda P. Case. "Along with proper health and medical attention, nutrition is an important component in the care of all dogs and pets." The second edition of "Canine and Feline Nutrition: A Resource for Companion Animal Professionals" was published in August by Mosby, a Harcourt Health Sciences company. The 592-page book was co-written with Daniel P. Carey and Leighann Daristotle, who are veterinarians for the Iams Co., and Diane A. Hirakawa, vice president for Iams research and development.
