FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Animal Shelters on International Sled Dog Race Receive Pedigree Food for Dogs
Jackson, Wyoming-December 19, 2001 Pedigree ® Food for Dogs, title sponsor of the International Pedigree Stage Stop Sled Dog Race (IPSSSDR), is contributing one year’s worth of dog food to each of the communities on the race route announced Frank Teasley, Race Director. The communities on the 2002 route are Jackson Hole, Dubois, Pinedale, Lander, Evanston/Mountain View, Kemmerer and Alpine. The food is used by the communities as prizes during the festivities surrounding the IPSSSDR, and distributed to local animal shelters.
"We are thrilled to receive the Pedigree pet food contribution," said Corey Rybeck, Jackson Hole Animal Shelter. "We use it at the shelter and the doggies here love it"
The Pedigree brand actively supports a wide range of programs that promote responsible pet ownership and highlight the contributions dogs make to society. Such programs include Homeward Bound, a national pet adoption support program to encourage adoption of the nation’s 12 million homeless animals; the National Association for Search and Rescue; police canine units; and non-profit organizations that train and place service dogs for hearing and visually impaired people.

Spurred by a call from the Marshall County Animal Rescue League in northern West Virginia, the GLRO set out to address this problem with a workshop series designed to bring the latest information to the rural areas of our region. From November 2001 through September 2002, GLRO presented seven day-long workshops in some of the neediest rural areas of the four states: southern Indiana, northern Michigan, southern Ohio, and northern and central West Virginia. A total of 183 participants representing 60 organizations in 54 counties took part in the low-cost series. Many of those attending had not been to a workshop in their field before. Without access to professional development and the networking that goes along with it, it is difficult for rural shelters to expand and improve their services for animals in their communities. They miss out on the latest tools and techniques in the animal care field, and can feel as if they are operating in isolation. So the workshops have provided a much-needed benefit to them.

Mission: The mission of MetroPets Online (MetroPets) is to promote the adoption of homeless animals and the well being of companion animals in the Washington DC metropolitan area. The Washington area has a relatively high euthanasia rate for companion animals yet contains a large number of shelters and rescue organizations. Understanding that the euthanasia rate may be lessened by both making adoption alternatives more easily accessible through a centralized resource and by educating the public, MetroPets coordinates these efforts by working with shelters and rescue organizations. MetroPets provides a single resource through which the general public can learn about animals available for adoption and how best to care for those animals.
Background: MetroPets was founded through a cooperative effort of animal shelter volunteers and professional web developers, who hold the belief that the high rate of internet usage (over 60% of the population) in the Washington, DC metropolitan area indicates a web-based approach to the high euthanasia rate of companion animals.

      Shelters and Cat Welfare
An unfortunate truth is that every day, many kitties are killed, abused and neglected. Hundreds of cats roam the streets, hungry, cold and alone, menaced by dogs and wild animals, hit by cars, and unable to take care of themselves. And other animals need our help too. Spay or Neuter Your Pets. So much of this tragedy could be averted if humans would have their pets "fixed". There aren't enough homes for them all. Unwanted cats and kittens end up as strays or are put into shelters, which can't care for them all, and can't find homes for every homeless feline. As a result, many kitties die. A simple operation would prevent this. It does NOT make cats fat and lazy. It DOES prevent them from roaming as much, spraying, and other unwanted behaviors. Adopt a Shelter Pet. Save a kitty's life by adopting your next pet from a shelter. Every day, so many cats are put down because shelters can't find enough homes for them. And often, you'll find the companion of a life time if you adopt through a humane society or shelter. Only about 5% of animals in shelters are adopted. Adopt a Mature Cat.

All of the dogs selected for this special training come from local animal shelters. The dogs are generally mixed breeds, six months to a year in age, in good health, with aim-to-please, energetic personalities. Each dog receives a thorough medical examination before training begins, including blood work, vaccinations and spay or neuter if necessary, to ensure a long healthy life. The dogs learn to respond to many sounds in the home, such as the door bell or knock, telephone, alarm clock, smoke alarm, or a baby's cries, during daily training sessions. General obedience and socialization rounds out their 4-8 months of custom training. IHDI also trains dogs to assist deaf/blind individuals (in the home only) by guiding slowly to the source of the sound. Each dog is selected with the needs and lifestyle of its new master in mind.

  • The SPARE Animal Shelter in Egypt is basically two shelters in one. The dog shelter can house up to 50 dogs. To complement the dog shelter is a new cat shelter (soon to be completed) able to care for approximately 30 cats. Both the dog shelter and the cat shelter are strictly "no kill". Most of the dogs we nurse back to health and put up for adoption are found in the streets of Cairo, some barely alive. Meet our mascot HOPSY one such animal. He is now a wonderful, happy yet severely handicapped dog. The Animal Shelters Pet Adoption success in Egypt has been good and climbing due to the hard work of our volunteers and the response to this Web Site. In the drawing board stage, to the cat and dog Animal Shelter is an expansion for donkeys, mules and horses to be built as funds become available.

  • THE ANIMAL CLINIC
  • The Clinic treats many sick animals free of charge belonging to the many animal owners that are economically disadvantaged. Such owners are meticulously instructed on how to care for their animals humanely on a regular daily basis. The SPARE Animal Clinic in Egypt has it's own modest operating room, used mainly for in-house neutering. Spaying (for the time being), are performed in local vet clinics. The clinic is staffed by professional paid vets and volunteers.
  • Seriously sick equines are sent to the renown BROOKE HOSPITAL who specialize predominantly in working equines worldwide. Less serious cases are treated in the clinic.
