COMPANION ANIMAL OVERPOPULATION:
THE SAD STATISTICS
One female cat and her offspring can produce 420,000 cats in 7 years. One female dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 dogs in 6 years. "No homes for littermates" is one of the top ten reasons people relinquish their cats and dogs to shelters. An estimated 4 to 6 million cats and dogs are killed in shelters each year. Millions more are abandoned, only to suffer from illness or injury before dying. In a study of relinquishment of cats and dogs in 12 U.S. animal shelters, 30% of the surrendered dogs were purebreds. The same study indicated that 55% of the surrendered dogs and 47% of the surrendered cats were unaltered. It costs U.S. taxpayers an estimated $2 billion each year to round up, house, kill, and dispose of homeless animals.

Also consider looking at shelters and my list of other places to look Submissions to this list will be greatly appreciated. See the submission information for instructions on adding to this list. Copying of this list is not only rude, but it shows disrespect for the animals for whom this list is maintained and whom may be killed as a result (of the use of out-of-date copies). References to this document, however, are welcomed. You do not need to ask my permission to link to these pages. Please consider referencing one level up, though, at http://www.ecn.purdue.edu/~laird/animal_rescue/ The list from which this page is built was last updated The following form will allow you to search all of the links I list. It was a request from a user. It's just in test mode right now and could go away. Please tell me what you think of it Note that I recently changed the way this works. When I index each site, I go through a proxy so that we don't run into UltraSeek license limitations. For most sites, this provides even better coverage because I can index deeper, but for some sites which use bad techniques, it will fail.

Many “happy tales” will be generated at Helen Woodward Animal Center this year as a result of an “Iams/ASPCA Lifelong Friends Grant”. Lifelong friendship is what a successful relationship between an animal and a human is all about. Each year, however, approximately 7.5 million adoptable pets throughout the United States remain behind bars in animal shelters waiting for homes. Helen Woodward Animal Center Development Director Renee Resko explains, “68% of these shelter pets were surrendered by their families because the animal wasn't a good match for the household. There are literally thousands of great potential pets waiting at these shelters every day because prospective pet parents aren't aware of them.” Resko says that Helen Woodward Animal Center is please to be a recipient of a Lifelong Friends grant. “The Iams Company, in partnership with the ASPCA, is taking action to reduce these numbers. We’re honored that they recognize our efforts and have ‘put their best paw forward’ to strengthen this relationship.”

We kicked off the Home 4 the Holidays campaign earlier this week here at Helen Woodward Animal Center. This year over 1,100 animal shelters and pet rescue groups in 19 countries around the world will join us for this pet adoption campaign. The first Home 4 the Holidays pet adoption drive began in 1999 when Helen Woodward Animal Center organized 14 San Diego area shelters to work together finding homes for orphaned pets during the holiday season. By the end of the 6-week drive, 2,563 orphaned dogs and cats were waking up each morning with their new families.

Dobermans are currently available in pounds, shelters, rescue facilities, and foster homes all over the United States and Canada. Please visit your local animal control facilities and contact your local rescue groups if you are interested in adding a doberperson to your life. On a personal note: I hope you will consider adopting a doberman that does not necessarilly meet all of your desired critera - such as cropped ears, or not the color you think you want. Maybe you might even consider an older dog or even a mix. They can all make great pets if you nurture them and love them. To those of you who have shared stories and pictures with me - I love them.

We have not verified whether or not this is actually true for any of the shelters listed in the directory. We warn people to not rely on this terminology unless they have personally verified it. Hugs for Homeless Animals' definition of the term "No-Kill Shelter" A true no-kill shelter must meet two criteria : (1) they must never kill an animal, except for a humane reason, such as to end pain and suffering, and (2) they must never allow the transfer of an animal from their shelter to another facility that does euthanize animals for reasons other than those mentioned in #1. Postal Service Unveils 'Neuter or Spay' Postage Stamps On The Price Is Right
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Kirby and Samantha, a photogenic puppy and kitten, will be featured on new First-Class Neuter or Spay commemorative postage stamps unveiled yesterday by the U.S. Postal Service.
The unveiling took place on the popular game show The Price Is Right with host and animal advocate Bob Barker. The segment of this show will air Tuesday, Dec. 11. The Neuter or Spay stamps will be issued in Sept. 2002.
"These stamps will serve as a reminder of the importance of neutering or spaying our pets," said Cathy Caggiano, executive director, Stamp Services for the Postal Service. "They will also serve as another way for the U.S. Postal Service to continue its tradition of raising the public's awareness of social issues."
"Millions of people from across the nation, who have been working to solve the tragic problem of animal overpopulation, will be delighted that the US Postal Service is issuing these all-important stamps," said Barker. "I am honored to have the opportunity to introduce these stamps to the nation on 'The Price Is Right.'"
The puppy, Kirby, and kitten, Samantha, featured on the stamp pane were adopted from animal shelters and, according to the shelters' policies, were respectively neutered and spayed. Both animals are enjoying life in Conn. with their adopting families.
