New Age Animal Training
Innovation Or Marketing Strategy?
by Diana Guerrero
Recently being promoted has been a different way of approaching our training animal friends both in the domestic and exotic animal realm. Unfortunately, it is not a new approach at all and although what is being taught is a useful tool, it does not treat our animal friends with a holistic attitude nor does it use some of the vital skills and information about those animals as individuals or as a species or breed that have been gathered over the last hundred or so years. The "Click and Reward" method or the "Operant Conditioning" methods currently being promoted are useful. Probably their best use is that they can teach even the most unskilled owner or client how to begin to work with an animal successfully. Unfortunately, the nuances or trust bond of that training still remains elusive to most people. "Operant Conditioning", is a form of training that relies on food reward. Behavior is shaped slowly and systematically. Ideally food reward is immediately reduced resulting in higher response and criteria of behavior. So, an animal originally rewarded for a "Sit" is given different parameters surrounding the "Sit". For instance, now it will be the fastest, or the straightest, and perhaps a longer "Sit" with more distance from the trainer. The general public is probably familiar with this method as used with marine mammals in oceanariums. In the 1950's Marineland of the Pacific did shows and other work with those types of animals using operant training. Reading Lads before the Wind, or Don't Shoot the Dog by Karen Pryor has given many people the idea to use "Operant Conditioning" as a tool. In domestic animal work this has been called the "Click and Reward" method of dog training. However with the various breed specific traits and personalities of different dogs it should not be used exclusively. If an owner has a dog who is non-responsive in a high stress situation or who has no food drive they will need assistance in other avenues of approaching their problems.

Animal Training
With this skill, a character gains the ability to train animals to response to verbal commands and nonverbal gestures. The extent of trainability depends on the nature of the animal and the skill of the trainer. The character must choose which type of animal he or she will learn how to train. Animals that are useful to train include horses, dogs, wolves, falcons, homing pigeons, snakes, and beasts of burden. Constructs may take this skill, but suffer a –6 penalty, due to their lack of vocal range and intonation, and their inability to make eye contact with the animals (Constructs don’t have faces.) Critical Success : The animal has been trained exceptionally well, and functions at +1 to Intelligence. This animal can be sold at three times the normal value due to its trainability, response time, versatility, and loyalty. Critical Failure : The animal can never be trained to do anything. Improper conditioning has effectively ruined it.
  • The training process takes six months. The training process takes four months.

Dan Hosford , Director of Training and his dog, Mercy From the day I brought Mercy home there was a bonding between her and I; something I had never before experienced with a dog. Little did I know that she would become my inspiration; my driving force in life. So many times we take for granted all the things that seem to make a difference. I have learned that the butterflies in my stomach are there for a reason if they were gone, so would be the drive and motivation. Mercy always manages to stir them and keep them flying. The rapport that Mercy and I share is seen when during that tense moment at the line, we look into each others eyes and we sense what the other is thinking. It's as if we're saying: yes, I understand, this is what we need to do to finish the day. We have succeeded together in accomplishing our goals as a high quality working team. Mercy is a remarkable asset to my profession, not only has she taught me the skills necessary to become confident and proficient but many other dog owners as well. Introducing those individuals to the skills and confidence necessary to maintain their own dog's performance is something Mercy does with ease. She manages to give them motivation and a positive outlook showing them how easily it can be done. And in the end, her pupils relax with pride and a smile.

This site is not for children. It does not contain pornography or any images that would be harmful for a child to view, but it does contain writing about adult roleplaying that is not intended for children. It is also not intended for adults that are offended by talk involving adult sexual themes.

I have registered with all the filtering systems to keep children from this site. I've done my part, now you do your part and get the software that you need to keep your kids from places they don't belong on the net. Please go here to get the software! Thank you for doing your part to protect children. I believe that the sexuality expressed here is very healthy and in fact quite educational, but I also believe in age appropriate materials and creating a world that does not burden children with things of an adult sexual nature. I would be mortified if any child's young life was ever tinged with confusion over the complex sexuality they would find here. Be good Mommy and Daddy types and get the software above. What is Animal Facilitated Therapy?
Animals have been used in institutional settings for years to comfort lonely and depressed patients, alleviate boredom, and help make facilities more "homelike." The use of animals, especially dogs, by hospitals in actual treatment sessions to assist patients work toward achievement of goals related to speech, movement and socialization is a more recent development. Northeast Rehab Hospital has developed and maintained a very active Animal Facilitated Therapy Program, organized and run by Ms. Linda Hume within the Therapeutic Recreation Department. Ms. Hume is a certified service and hearing dog trainer, who co-treats in 1:1 treatment sessions with patients. The program uses a substantial core of volunteers and well-screened, highly-trained animals. Animals are used within the context of traditional treatment sessions with physical, occupational and speech therapists. Additionally, the animals also make social visits to patients, delivering mail, going on rounds and participating in many community educational presentations.
