Adapting Your Dog's Training for Therapy Work - The "Recall"
  • Get your dog used to responding to both verbal commands and gestures "to come";
    • Use lots of encouragement Make gestures very obvious and enthusiastic in the beginning Practice having your dog come to you while you are seated insisting that they come close enough so that you can easily reach out to touch use 'treats' as needed; Do not allow the dog to jump on you. Have the animal sit when they approach you; Work at different distances. Many dogs are not used to doing a recall with a person seated close to them; Recruit someone to help with that person acting as "patient" so that the dog (and you) can get used to working with another person;

    SCAT MATS What the Experts Say. AMERICAN VETERINARY SOCIETY FOR ANIMALBEHAVIOR. DVM Immediate Past President. ANIMAL BEHAVIOR CONSULTANTS, INC.
    http://www.hdw-inc.com/scatmatexperts.htm
    HDW SCAT MATS - What the Experts Say AMERICAN VETERINARY SOCIETY FOR ANIMAL BEHAVIOR "The only time that punishment is either appropriate or effective is while the pet is 'in the act' of misbehaving… Although shock is not necessary for most pets, it must be remembered that in order for punishment to be effective it must be noxious enough to deter misbehavior…Scat Mat is an effective alternative when all else fails."
    Gary Landsberg, B.Sc. DVM
    Immediate Past President ANIMAL BEHAVIOR CONSULTANTS, INC. "I have used the Scat Mat for many cases in which the goal was to keep the pet dog or cat away from an area. These cases involved a variety of behaviors including: * Urinating or defecating on particular spots,
    * Scratching certain pieces of furniture,
    * Jumping onto counters, tables, sofas, etc.
    * Spraying or urine marking on particular spots,
    * Resting or sleeping in certain areas,
    * Barking, whining or meowing/howling - by keeping pet away from doors or windows.
    The Scat Mat is effective because it is based on well researched principles of avoidance learning. The electrical stimulation can be adjusted to be startling enough to make the animal reflexively jump off of the Mat, and thus very quickly learn to avoid that spot in the future. The 'spot', rather than the Mat itself, usually becomes the salient cue for avoidance. Since the level of electrical stimulation never becomes very high, and the animal learns within a few trials, there is no issue of 'cruelty'.

    A training school is only as good as its teacher! May we make a suggestion? Selection of the wrong place to have your dog trained can at the least “break his spirit”. All to often you don't get what you pay for. Professional trainers are not licensed or regulated. Anyone can advertise as a “professional” dog trainer. Would you believe that very well known St. Louis based training school hires trainers without any experience, then assigns them to teach classes to the public. They learn on-the-job, at your expense. A talented, experienced, knowledgeable trainer can transform you puppy into a wonderful dog for a lifetime. A training school is only as good as the trainer. Make a list of your choices of dog training schools and schedule a consultation with the trainer. During your interview ask questions such as: How long have you been training dogs? What have you accomplished in AKC competition?
