Introduction to Animal Training
When did people first start training animals?
People have been training animals for thousands of years. Historically, falconers have trained hawks, and hunters have trained dogs. Dogs have also been trained for herding livestock and for pulling sleds. Elephants have been trained for carrying logs. Horses and camels have been trained for riding and hauling. Today, people still train these animals.
Marine mammal training, however, is a relatively new field. For example, people have been training killer whales for only about the past 25 years. It is only recently that we have begun to explore the learning aptitude of marine mammals.
Something to remember about animal training.
Today's leaders in the field of animal training do not have all the answers to the questions that intrigue us. The field of mammal training continues to change as we learn more and more about the behavior of these unique animals.

Animal Training Whip and "Subdue, " or Reward and Respect?
Contributing Editor
Sharon Rendell-Smock" April 2001 Thirty or forty years ago people wanted a different kind of animal show in America. Similar to a bullfight of years ago, the audience wanted to trainer to go in the ring and look like he wasn't going to come out. The Conquerors Thank goodness these methods are nearly extinguished. Trainer David Tetzlaff, who's worked at Caribbean Gardens and Jungle Larry's in Naples, Florida, with tigers, leopards, lions, elephants, monkeys, and more animals than I can name, is only in his early 30s. He deeply appreciates that the public has pivoted 180 degrees in what we want to see in an animal act. Lions have been trained for thousands of years. Wild tigers were trained a few hundred years ago, although no animals were born in captivity and hand raised at that time. The animals were caught in their habitat. Then the trainer would break the animal's wild spirit by force. This was no considered cruel, because people generally felt that wild animals were not like usanimals were thought to be unintelligent, unfeeling, and lacking the ability to communicate. In the nineteenth century, tigers, lions, leopards, elephants, and other animals were put on display in traveling zoos called menageries. An American, Isaac Van Amburgh, created one of the first circus wild animal acts by getting into the cage with his animals. Some "animal tamers" in the late 1800s and early 1900s trained their animals to roar and strike out, as to simulate an attack. As Joanne Joys explained in Wild Animal Trainer in America, the trainer and animals became actors.

Job Skills and Abilities for Animal Trainers
Important Information When Aspiring to Work with Exotic Animals:
  • Knowledge of animals, skill in operant conditioning training, and public speaking
  • Physical Conditioning
  • Animal Husbacndry
  • Apprenticeship Programs/Trainer Certification
The three most important aspects of work with exotic animals are: knowledge of the animals, skill in operant conditioning training, especially bridge and target training, and public speaking and presentation expertise. However, there are some other very important job skills that can give you the edge when trying to land that job. Physical condiitioning is an important aspect of work with animals. The jobs are physically demanding, require athleticism and endurance, and are high profile. While most employers would not state physique as a job requirement, the fact is that with thousands of applicants for each position, employers can afford to be picky. If you want to be in the running, be fit and in condition, have very good swimming skills, be comfortable in the water, and consider being certified as a scuba diver. Other valuable assets are good knowledge of animal nutrition and supplementation, food processing, water quality control and filtration, handling of hazardous chemicals, and proficiency in driving large trucks.

Introduction
Here is an introduction to some great things people do with their dogs. Most activities welcome all dogs, whether purebred or of mixed breed heritage. Some of these activities are classed as "working dog" activities, but are also done on a recreational basis, or as a public service. Some are purely recreational in nature. Many of these activities may be new to you. I have chosen my links based upon how welcoming they are to the merely curious. You can make a selection from the list of activities below , try my frames version , or check out the rest of this site . Have fun with your dog!

Why Train Your Dog?
CLASSES -see below One of the most important things you can do for a companion dog is to train. Training, management and relationship are the foundation for solving and preventing many behavior problems. Effective training improves communication between human and dog; effective communication is necessary to teach a dog. Once learning begins, for the human and for the animal, you're on your way to having a much more acceptable family member and canine citizen, and a dog that is much more likely to make you smile every day. Training helps to improve the quality of human and animal lives. Training may be the most effective way to establish a relationship with a dog. Training should be fun for dog and human in order to succeed. Because every waking moment you spend with a dog, assuming that the dog is also awake, is a learning opportunity for the dog and for you there's not much difference between training and playing.
