This year's winner of our Schools competition is Emma McGuiness who is in P7 at Mossneuk Primary School, East Kilbride. In the 1st caption Emma has shown Max thinking about the walk that his owner should have taken him on before he left for work. Unfortunately Max didn't get taken for a walk, which has left him bored and resulted in him chewing his owners trainers. Emma has shown that Max owner is very angry although the following day the owner is more thoughtful and feels guilty about leaving Max alone. This time he leaves the stereo and T.V on for Max as well as arranging for someone to come in and take Max for a walk while he is out. Crazy about cats? Dotty about dogs? Mad about mice? -

Protecting Man's Best Friends
Animals bless our lives in so many ways, yet far too often they are abused, neglected and even used for research. Laws passed to protect them are often ignored or simply not enforced. The organizations below strive to fill in the gaps where needed, investigating and reporting animal abuse, aiding animals in need, helping to place them in loving homes, and educating the public about how best to care for their own animal companions.

KZAR . Kczar is my name and I am about to become homeless. I am a nice guy and my family does love me but they are senior citizens and are moving into place that won't accept me. I am a happy guy, maybe a little overweight but with exercise and love I will definitely slim down. I am affectionate, very alert, housebroken and I understand several commands. I also like to take rides in the car.ÊIf you meet me you will see what a wonderful pet I can be!!
Precious . Hi! My name is Precious. I am an absolutely handsome beautiful little girl who was certainly not treated well by my first owner. They left me in the bathroom of their apartment and moved out. I was without food, water, or bathroom facilities for a week. I am so glad I was rescued and now I am just waiting for my forever home. I love people, children, other pets - even cats! I am 7 mos old and have a long time ahead of me that is full of love.
Please consider an older pet, they make wonderful companions.

As reflected through his works and his generosity to various animal welfare organizations, Edward Gorey was a great advocate of animals, large and small, all over the world.
The following are some of the organizations Edward expressed a fondness for in his lifetime. We are also working closely with Tufts Veterinary School in an effort to raise awareness about other animal welfare causes on the Cape and all over Massachusetts through collaborative exhibits and programs. The Edward Gorey House is proud to include these organizations in our mission to promote animal welfare: Tufts Veterinary School
Grafton, MA
www.tufts.edu/vet

Tufts offers an encompassing education in modern veterinary medicine with an innovative, flexible curriculum, enabling students to pursue careers in veterinary medicine and providing them with outstanding opportunities to model the best in themselves through their compassionate care of animals, including their health, welfare and conservation. Tufts has developed five signature programs that push the traditional boundaries of veterinary medicine: International Veterinary Medicine, Wildlife Medicine, Equine Sports Medicine, Veterinary Biotechnology and Ethics and Values in Veterinary Medicine. They also have a Center for Animals and Public Policy that leads the profession in the study of the role of animals in our society.

Designing Community Education Programs to Promote Animal Welfare : The RSPCA's Experiences Anne Hindle

Phone (07)848 0522
Fax (07)848 1178 At present I am employed as Queensland Education Officer for the RSPCA. Initially I graduated as a primary school teacher in Queensland although a combination of circumstances led to the unususal professional experience of may having taught all classes from Preschool to Year 12 in a variety of rural and urban schools. Of particular relevance to my current position were appointments to various primary and secondary schools in low socioeconomic areas (often with a large ethnic population) and two one-teacher schools in the Northern Territory. Teaching in these situations made me acutely aware of the widespread problems of illiteracy (inability to read and write effectively) and aliteracy (those who can read and write but choose not to because they lack time, energy or inclination) existing in these communities and the lack of appropriate resources to address these problems. Several years later I enrolled in the Veterinary Nursing Course at Ithaca TAFE Queensland where I learned of the important on-going role of the veterinarian and veterinary nurse in responsible pet ownership, the needs, habits and origins of particular pets and the importance of regular preventative health care programs and of zoonoses.

About Us Field Projects How You Can Help Publications ... Animals in Education Animals in Education
The Humane Society of the United States recognizes the importance of biology studies within all levels of education. As the "study of life," biology programs should be designed to instill in students an interest in, and respect for, all living things. The HSUS believes that these objectives are best met when biology education focuses on animals as living, sentient creatures, emphasizing their behavior, life history patterns, and relationships with their environment. The HSUS offers a wide variety of information for teachers and students pertaining to dissection and the use of animals in education. Our online dissection resources include but are not limited to:
  • A listing of and links to dissection laws/student choice policies from various states.
  • Frequently asked questions about dissection.
The HSUS has also developed an Animals and Society Courses project whose aim is to expand the presence of college courses concerned with animal ethics, animal rights, and/or animal welfare. As part of this effort, we maintain a list of those courses currently offered. While acting as a barometer of the current state of education in this arena, the list also notifies students interested in such studies, provides information to faculty who may be considering such courses, and serves as a resource to share with administrators at schools not yet offering such courses. Each year, The HSUS presents awards for academic excellence in the design and instruction of Animals and Society Courses. These awards are intended to help foster the availability of high-quality curricula and instruction in a variety of relevant academic fields.
