As reflected through his works and his generosity to various animal welfare organizations, Edward Gorey was a great advocate of animals, large and small, all over the world.
The following are some of the organizations Edward expressed a fondness for in his lifetime. We are also working closely with Tufts Veterinary School in an effort to raise awareness about other animal welfare causes on the Cape and all over Massachusetts through collaborative exhibits and programs. The Edward Gorey House is proud to include these organizations in our mission to promote animal welfare: Tufts Veterinary School
Grafton, MA
www.tufts.edu/vet

Tufts offers an encompassing education in modern veterinary medicine with an innovative, flexible curriculum, enabling students to pursue careers in veterinary medicine and providing them with outstanding opportunities to model the best in themselves through their compassionate care of animals, including their health, welfare and conservation. Tufts has developed five signature programs that push the traditional boundaries of veterinary medicine: International Veterinary Medicine, Wildlife Medicine, Equine Sports Medicine, Veterinary Biotechnology and Ethics and Values in Veterinary Medicine. They also have a Center for Animals and Public Policy that leads the profession in the study of the role of animals in our society.

In a bold new initiative with a view to the future of our sport, the MFHA has created a new category of membership Subscribing Member. All who love and respect the wholesome heritage of country life and field sports are invit ed to become Subscribing Members of the MFHA. The new membership is not limited to foxhunters. Those who hunt with Beagles, Bassets, pointers, or retrievers may join. Subscribing Membership in the MFHA is open to anyone who cares about the future of country lifestyles and wants their voice and vote to make a difference.
The threat from animal rights groups becomes greater every day. The MFHA has been a leader in fighting for the right to hunt with hounds. Indeed we are the only hound organization that receives regular media attention when issues with hunting with hounds occur. We did not seek this responsibility, nor do we have the funds that would allow us to properly address these issues. This mission has been thrust upon us because we are well organized and have been willing to stand in the front line fighting for the country lifestyles that are the fabric of our history and heritage. We accept this responsibility. We promote and support many country issues essential to hunting with hounds including equestrian sports, conservation issues, and the preservation of wildlife and habitat.

What is the RSPCA?
The work of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) can often go unnoticed until we read horrific stories about starving dogs, cats being drowned tied up in plastic bags, reptiles dying of starvation and other cruel acts committed on animals - whether pets, wildlife, farm animals or exotics. As the world's oldest and best-known animal welfare organisation, the RSPCA has been protecting the welfare of animals in the UK and overseas for many years. Whether caring for abandoned or neglected animals, prosecuting animal abusers, educating or lobbying for animal welfare, the RSPCA is one of the largest welfare enforcement agencies in UK. The Society has 187 local branches that work for animal welfare at a local level and offer support by providing, where resources allow, re-homing services and subsidised veterinary treatment for those in need. Each branch is an independently registered charity and together they are responsible for 40 branch-run clinics, 37 animal centres and 10 animal welfare centres.

http://www.aps.uoguelph.ca/~gking/Ag_2350/welfare.htm
Proponents of animal rights are organizing and intensifying attacks on livestock production. Groups such as PETA contend that humans have no business using other species of animals for any purpose at all. They present a very negative image of livestock farming and use a multitude of issues such as food quality, residues and poisonings, as well as pollution and cruelty to convey their message about the evils of meat consumption and fur wearing. Conferring rights indicates animal-human equality, inferring that all forms of animal restriction or exploitation is wrong. If accepted in total, this would means no animal foods, no animal fibers, no draft animals, no recreational animals, no companion animals and no animals for medical research, unless the animals volunteer. Animal welfare organizations usually concede that superior intelligence enables humans to domesticate and exploit animals. Whenever exercised, this control carries a moral and often a legal responsibility to provide suitable care, ensuring a reasonably pleasant life and pain-free death. Most livestock producers are in complete agreement with this view.

Coordinated Effort Brings Education, Services to Africa September 2002 WSPA is working with children all over Africa to foster positive new attitudes towards animals. Mauritius, Africa - It's been a few weeks now since WSPA and the Marchig Trust donated the mobile veterinary clinic van, and the "new car" smell is starting to wear off. PAWS, an animal welfare group on the island nation of Mauritius, has already put the specially equipped van to use and is providing companion animals with vaccination programs and spay/neuter services. "PAWS is a wonderful organization and I'm glad that WSPA and the Marchig Trust could put their funds together and donate this new mobile clinic to them," said Regional Director Garry Richardson. "Like so many other animal welfare organizations in Africa, PAWS has great potential but limited resources. This van gives them the mobility they need in order to reach the animals that wouldn't otherwise have access to veterinary care." The donation of the new van in September was just one piece of a series of WSPA projects across the African continent designed to empower animal welfare organizations and the communities they serve.
