Our Mission AnimaLovers saves lives. Since the summer of 1995 Animalovers volunteers have been rescuing and finding new homes for stray and unwanted dogs and cats all over the Capital Region. Our not-for-profit group provides foster homes, veterinary care, nutritious food and a lot of love to the animals in its care. Each cat and dog is carefully matched with it's new adoptive family. Because AnimaLovers promotes sterilization rather than euthanasia as the best means of population control, the group pays to spay and neuter all animals in its custody. To help guarantee a bright future for the cats and dogs in our community, AnimaLovers also educates the public about the responsibility of pet ownership and supports laws that prevent cruelty to animals.

88. Cat Welfare And The Indoor/outdoor Cats Debate
Explores the arguments for and against confining cats from an Australian perspective.
http://www.angelfire.com/sc2/petswelfare/cats/indoor.html
The indoor/outdoor cats debate
Indoor cats Outdoor cats Happy indoor cats Forum discussion This website does not condone the total confinement of cats. However, it does try to present both sides of the debate in an unbiased fashion.
The argument for indoor cats
Cars Dogs Diseases Other cats ... Longer life Always the first argument raised for confining cats is to prevent their predation on birds and other wildlife. However, there is a great deal of propaganda and misinformation about the threat cats actually pose to wildlife, and this is thoroughly discussed under The truth about cats and wildlife . It is important to reiterate here that the natural cat is nocturnal and much prefers to prey on rodents, also mainly nocturnal, than on any other species. Rabbits or hares are also a favourite prey if available. A problem with confining cats at night is that often they will become daytime hunters and thus potentially pose a greater threat particularly to birds. But irrespective of whether cats are a real or imagined threat to the local wildlife, it can make sense in certain environments to confine them, at least partially, for their own safety. Threats to free-roaming cats include
  • Cars . Cars are the number one killer and maimer of people, wildlife and cats. Cats and many wildlife species are particularly vulnerable at night, when they are easily dazzled by headlights. For cats out and about during daylight hours, an added problem is that they have a bad habit of running blindly across the road in front of oncoming traffic. Some cats in urban and suburban areas do become streetwise and learn to avoid traffic, but many thousands more do not and are killed.

AVMA Policy on animal welfare and Animal Rights. animal welfare isa and people. About the AVMA animal welfare Committee. The major
http://www.avma.org/care4pets/morewelf.htm

AVMA Policy on Animal Welfare and Animal Rights
Animal welfare is a human responsibility that encompasses all aspects of animal well-being, from proper housing and nutrition to preventive care, treatment of disease, and when necessary, humane euthanasia. The AVMA's commitment to animal welfare is unsurpassed. However, animal welfare and animal rights are not the same. AVMA cannot endorse the philosophical views and personal values of animal rights advocates when they are incompatible with the responsible use of animals for human purposes, such as food and fiber, and for research conducted to benefit both humans and animals.
Guiding Principles
The AVMA encourages all veterinarians to offer their time and special expertise to aid in developing a better understanding of all aspects of the welfare of animals. Veterinarians are also encouraged to aid in developing guidelines and standards that may be necessary to assure proper stewardship of animals.
