Eating Disorder Referral and Information Center International Eating Disorder Referral Organization Defining characteristics of Anorexia Nervosa: Individuals with anorexia nervosa are unwilling or unable to maintain a body weight that is normal or expectable for their age and height (most clinicians use 85% of normal weight as a guide). Individuals with anorexia nervosa typically display a pronounced fear of weight gain and a dread of becoming fat although they are dramatically underweight. Concerns and perceptions about their weight have a extremely powerful influence and impact on their self-evaluation. The seriousness of the weight loss and its physical effects is minimized or denied (women with the diagnosis of anorexia nervosa have missed at least three consecutive menstrual cycles). Diagnostic criteria of anorexia nervosa include two subtypes of the disorder that describe two distinct behavioral patterns. Individuals with the Restricting Type maintain their low body weight purely by restricting food intake and increased activity (i.e. compulsive exercise). Those with the Binge-Eating/Purging Type usually restrict their food intake but also regularly engage in binge eating and/or purging behaviors (i.e. self-induced vomiting or the misuse of laxatives, diuretics or enemas). Binge-Eating/Purging Type of Anorexia Nervosa is also frequently associated with other impulse control problems and mood disorders. People who suffer from anorexia often have low self-esteem and a tremendous need to control their surroundings and emotions. The eating disorder is often a reaction to external and internal conflicts (i.e. anxiety, stress, and unhappiness can be leading factors).

I'm binging like a bitch, and I need to stop. I fucked up so bad this weekend. I HATE it. It always happens when I'm with my mom. She eats like a fucking horse and is smaller than me and is always telling me that I need to lose more weight. Well you know what? If you wouldn't shove food down my throat and make me sick all the time I'm with you, then I wouldn't be fat then, now would I? I just feel so helpless. God, girls, please help me out of this. Maybe some words or encouragement or something....I need people to help me, get out of this eating thing. I can't eat anymore. It's killing my self-esteem. Thanks all. 3 Comments Comment on this Thursday, March 27th, 2003 3:17 pm
Hi, I'm new. My name is Ellen, and I've been anorexia/sort of bulimic, and a cutter for the past 6 years. Way too long. Anyway, I don't have too many friends that understand about those things and it gets very lonely with no one to talk about it, so I thought I'd join this community since everyone here would understand. I'd love to have more friends who understand these disorders (as I said, it's hard when no one understands) so I'd really really appreciate it if some of you could add me to your friends list. Thanks. :) My e-mail is Victoriacat14@aol.com if anyone ever wants to talk.

    Welcome to SexHelp.com!
Special Book Offers Order Sexual Anorexia
Sexual anorexia is an obsessive state in which the physical, mental, and emotional task of avoiding sex dominates one's life. Like self-starvation with food or compulsive dieting or hoarding with money, deprivation with sex can make one feel powerful and defended against all hurts. As with any other altered state of consciousness, such as those brought on by chemical use, compulsive gambling or eating, or any other addiction process, the preoccupation with the avoidance of sex can seem to obliterate one's life problems. The obsession can then become a way to cope with all stress and all life difficulties. Yet, as with other addictions and compulsions, the costs are great. In this case, sex becomes a furtive enemy to be continually kept at bay, even at the price of annihilating a part of oneself. The word anorexia comes from the Greek word orexis, meaning appetite. An-orexis, then, means the denial of appetite. When referring to food appetite, anorexia means the obsessive s tate of food avoidance that translates into self-starvation. Weight concerns and fear of fat transform into a hatred of food and a hatred of the body because the body demands the nurturance of food. food anorexics perceive bodily cravings for sustenance as a failure of self-discipline. The refusal to eat also becomes a way for food anorexics to reassert power against others, particularly those who may be perceived as trying to control the anorexic, trying in some manner to prevent the anorexic from being his or her "true" self. Ironically, many food anorexics are driven by a powerful need to meet unreal cultural standards about the attractiveness of being thin. A terror of sexual rejection rules their thoughts and behaviors and is a primary force behind this striving for thinness. The irony here is that sexual anorexics share precisely the same terror.

Print Version Disordered Beauty: Anorexia by Michael Sones In the mid-nineteenth century successful Western businessmen and politicians "tummy bulged." Their relative obesity in societies in which the scourge of potential famine had only relatively recently been overcome was a sign of their high status and social success. Eating disorders were relatively rare then. They have now become much more common and are quite possibly increasing in the developed countries where there is relatively ample food. Only in countries where there is ample food can there be a cultural fashion for thinness.

Do images of superthin supermodels play a role in eating disorders?
Eating disorders are responsible for the highest number of deaths from psychiatric illness. The Eating Disorders Association estimates that about 165,000 people in the UK have eating disorders with 10% dying as a result, but experts believe it could be higher. Most sufferers are women, but one in 10 are now men. The most common eating disorders are anorexia, bulimia and compulsive over-eating. But other disorders exist. For example, some people severely restrict the range of food they eat or several children have a psychological fear of food. Anorexia, which involves depriving the body of food, is more common in young people. Children as young as three have been treated for it. Bulimia, characterised by a cycle of starving and bingeing, is more likely in adults. The emphasis on super-thin models has been blamed for the increase in eating disorders. Experts say that these can have an effect on how people perceive themselves, but the causes of eating disorders are usually more complex and are linked to general feelings of self-worth.

Proof that anorexia may be due to physical deficiencies opens a door for future treatment with medication
Dr Annemarie van Elburg The finding could pave the way for the development of drugs to treat the eating disorder. People with anorexia starve themselves because they believe that they are fat. In 20% of cases the condition is fatal. It is more common among girls, and usually develops during early adolescence. Only 30% of anorexia sufferers completely recover from the disease. Many experts believe the condition is caused by social and psychological pressures on young girls to stay thin.
