Antarctic Exploration A History of the Turn-of-the-Century Pursuit of the South Pole
On New Year's Day, after eight weeks of grueling travel by dog and man-hauling, Scott Shackleton and Wilson turned northwards away from the South Pole "reluctantly forced to confess that all [their] trouble had been in vain." These three men of the Discovery Expedition, though, had, in Scott's words, "made a greater advance towards a pole of the earth than has ever yet been achieved by a sledge party." Their ordeal, however, was far from over. On the other side of the world, on 16 June, Amundsen set sail with a crew of six aboard the Gjoa on a double quest, to cross the Northwest Passage by sea and to relocate the Magnetic North Pole. By 1905, he would succeed in both his goals. What the Eskimos taught him would serve him well later in the Antarctic. That same year, after having heroically saved his men while suffering a wounded leg in the Boer War, Oates was recovering in the luxury his class afforded him, enjoying his greatest passions, hunting and horses. Yet, he seemed to long for a sense of purpose. Meanwhile, in June, as Midshipman R.N.R. and 2nd Mate on the Loch Torridon

Voyage was an unforgettable experience - thanks. Excellent crew and outstanding catering on board - highly recommendable. DL ANTARCTIC EXPLORATION - CHRONOLOGY Christopher Columbus discovered the New World when trying to reach the Spice Islands of the East Indies. Dutchman, Dirk Gerritsz reported seeing snow-covered mountains some 500 kilometers from South America after being blown off course while rounding Cape Horn. These were undoubtedly the South Shetland Islands. Unbeknown to Cook, he circumnavigated the Antarctic continent. During this voyage he discovered the South Sandwich Islands and South Georgia Island, but it was his reports of huge populations of fur seals which led directly to the next era of exploration in the Antarctic. From bases in New Zealand, American, European and Russian sealers discovered and started exploiting the fur seals of the Antipodes Islands. Sealers discovered the Auckland Islands, where fur seal colonies were wiped out within a few years.

Expedition Summary
You never know what we're going to discover when we set course for the Weddell Sea, a wild and exciting area alive with wildlife and full of exploration opportunities. The day to day itinerary of this voyage is dependent on weather and ice conditions prevailing in the vicinity of the mighty Riser Larsen Iceshelf. Nestled among ice floes of the northern Weddell Sea is the little known Seymour Island. Locked away in its fossil-rich rocks is the story of the disappearance of the dinosaurs and the collapse of the mythical Gondwanaland. The aim of this voyage is to explore these fossil beds under the watchful eye of Dr. Paul Willis and our other scientific experts, as well as to enjoy the wildlife treasure chest of the northern Weddell Sea. Having traveled through the iceberg canyons of Antarctic Sound, we enter the Weddell Sea, where we hope to follow the incredible, compelling story of Swedish explorer Otto Nordenskjold and his men (1901-1904). We will travel in Zodiacs around the icebergs and wildlife havens of this lesser explored part of the Peninsula. We also plan to spend a few days on the better known west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula.

Overview Trip Itinerary Registration Printable Brochure Gallery ... Questions Wildlife Photography Trip (with Scuba Diving Option) The Antarctica trip had always intrigued me. In fact, I was consumed with the dream of going to Antarctica for many years. In 1976, I decided to make the dream a reality and joined three friends as we set sail on a 72-foot Catch delivering this vessel from Australia to Argentina. However, a three-week gale storm with 100 mph winds, 50-foot towering waves and temperatures below zero foiled our attempt to visit this alluring and prized destination. We didn't reach our destination as we were more concerned with survival and delivering the vessel. This experience, still so vividly ingrained in my memory, fueled my desire to visit Antarctica. Through the years I became consumed by the dream till.... on January 14, 2002 I will attempt the trip again! This time, better prepared, I will be on board an ice strengthened vessel which is fully equipped for diving and of course, with a few cameras at hand..."

Introduction
What's the truth and who says so? In the old days (say just before you were born), people could read books, study, and feel pretty sure they knew what was going on. Then things started changing. We realized everyone had an opinion and if we listened, we could learn something. We also found that a lot of topics weren't separate, but connected to each other. So thinking in little boxes didn't work so well. Then along came the Web. Ah-oh... Because anyone can publish a Web page and passionate people tend to want to get their ideas out there, almost any interest, concern or issue has its online community.
Guess what: you're going to use the Web for learning. And grabbing someone else's ideas without giving them a close look is worse than silly. Think of it as intellectual slavery. So let's break the chains. You need to explore this Hotlist of web sites to develop an basic understanding of our topic.
As a group you're going to explore the topic of Antarctica. Each member of your team will become an expert in one part of the topic. Then you'll have to come back together to answer a question that gets to the heart of 'what's the truth and who says so?'
