SOCIAL ANXIETY DISORDER
First Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor Approved for Long-Term Treatment of Social Anxiety Disorder NEW YORK, February 10 Zoloft is the first and only selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) approved in the United States for long-term treatment in patients with this condition. Two double-blind, placebo-controlled trials including more than 600 patients demonstrated that Zoloft was significantly more effective than placebo in reducing the anxiety, fear and avoidance behaviors experienced by people with social anxiety disorder, also known as social phobia. In one of these studies 53 percent of patients receiving Zoloft responded to treatment compared to 29 percent of placebo patients. Patients enrolled in the study had a mean duration of social anxiety disorder for nearly 21 years. "Social anxiety disorder is the most common anxiety disorder in the United States. It affects work functioning, social relationships and also impairs quality of life," said Cathryn Clary, MD, Senior Medical Director, Pfizer Inc. "Zoloft's demonstrated efficacy in both acute and long-term treatment provides an important new option for people suffering from this disorder."

    History Of The Foundation
The Anxiety Disorders Foundation was formed in South Australia in January 1992 by a group of consumers and mental health professionals. The NSW Branch was formed in December 1995. The Anxiety Disorders Foundation of Australia is a non-profit, voluntary organisation concerned with the widespread and largely neglected hardship and distress of those suffering from Anxiety Disorders. Individual sufferers and the separate treatment services on their own have been unable to promote and co-ordinate effectively the broad spectrum of treatments and research that is needed to appropriately care for these people.

Charlie, now 11 years old , is entering 6th grade in a middle school. Each September since kindergarten the start of school has always been a struggle for him. This year his distress escalated with the added demand of starting in a new school, and by November he missed twenty-six days of school. His academic work has suffered, and his teachers have sent his assignments home. Charlie insists that he can't complete them without his mother's presence. He worries that something bad may happen to his mom while he is in school. Corinne 's mother tried everything she could think of to get her 14-year-old daughter to join an after-school club or accept invitations to parties at classmates' homes. Corinne insisted that she would rather stay home and read; she didn't think she fit in with her friends any more and didn't know what to say to them. When she did venture out with a cousin, it took her hours to do her makeup because she didn't think she looked quite right.

Depression and anxiety disorders are not the same, although at first glance they seem very similar. Depression generates emotions such as hopelessness, despair and anger. Energy levels are usually very low, and depressed people often feel overwhelmed by the day-to-day tasks and personal relationships so essential to life.
A person with anxiety disorder, however, experiences fear, panic or anxiety in situations where most people would not feel anxious or threatened. The sufferer may experience sudden panic or anxiety attacks without any recognized trigger, and often lives with a constant nagging worry or anxiousness. Without treatment, such disorders can restrict a person’s ability to work, maintain relationships, or even leave the house. Both anxiety and depression are frequently treated in much the same manner, which may explain why the two disorders are so often confused. Antidepressant medication is often used for anxiety, while behavioral therapy frequently helps people overcome both conditions.

    Social Anxiety Disorder
What is social anxiety disorder? Symptoms Is it different from being shy? Treatment What is social anxiety disorder?
Social anxiety disorder is characterized by fear and anxiety in social situations, extreme shyness, timidity, and concerns about being embarrassed in front of others. Social anxiety disorder affects up to 5% of children, and is the third most common psychiatric disorder in childhood. Situations that trigger anxiety and are often difficult for children with social anxiety disorder are speaking in front of the class, talking with unfamiliar children, performing in front of others, taking tests, and interacting with strangers. Children with social anxiety are often lonely, have fewer friends than other children their age, and report symptoms of depression. Children who develop social anxiety before the age of 12 are not likely to outgrow the disorder. Left untreated, many children with social anxiety disorder grow up to be socially anxious adults and continue to have problems in interpersonal situations.

    Generalized Anxiety Disorder
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is characterized by 6 months or more of chronic, exaggerated worry and tension that is unfounded or much more severe than the normal anxiety most people experience. People with this disorder usually expect the worst; they worry excessively about money, health, family, or work, even when there are no signs of trouble. They are unable to relax and often suffer from insomnia. Many people with GAD also have physical symptoms, such as fatigue, trembling, muscle tension, headaches, irritability, or hot flashes. Fortunately, through research supported by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), effective treatments have been developed to help people with GAD.

Anxiety Disorder Research Gail Bernstein, M.D. The last few years have brought exciting breakthroughs in the area of anxiety disorders in youth. Anxiety disorders in children and adolescents has been recognized as one of the most common areas of pediatric psychopathology. These advances are of great importance because anxiety disorders in children are associated with negative outcomes including peer relationship difficulties, academic failure, and later onset of comorbid disorders including major depression and alcohol abuse. Normative data about anxiety symptoms in the general population are now available. These findings are helpful to the clinician in differentiating "normal" childhood worries from clinical worries. Subclinical anxiety symptoms are very common in the general pediatric population. About 70% of grade school children report they worry "every now and then". The most common worries are related to school performance, illness of self or others, getting teased, making mistakes, or concern about physical appearance. Children with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) compared to normal children describe a greater number of more severe, impairing worries. Children with GAD have trouble controlling their worry and do not participate in activities to distract them from their worried thoughts. Interestingly, some normal children, unlike those with GAD, recognize their main worry as serving a positive purpose.
