Dentistry and Treatment of
Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Dentists play an important role in the team approach to the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea. Physicians, dentists, psychologists, and respiratory therapists all pool their knowledge to treat each patient appropriately and effectively. Dentists who are specifically trained in aspects of sleep medicine and have a command of multiple appliance modalities are of great help to physicians in treating patients with sleep disordered breathing problems. Oral Appliance Therapy Oral appliance therapy is one of several non surgical treatments for snoring and obstructive sleep apnea. Oral appliances reposition the lower jaw and the tongue permitting the airway to remain open, and reducing or eliminating apneic events.

Apnea and Bradycardia of Prematurity
What is apnea?
Apnea is a pause in breathing that has one or more of the following characteristics:
  • lasts more than 15-20 seconds
  • is associated with the baby's color changing to pale, purplish or blue
  • is associated with bradycardia or a slowing of the heart rate
What is bradycardia? Bradycardia is a slowing of the heart rate, usually to less than 80 beats per minute for a premature baby. Bradycardia often follows apnea or periods of very shallow breathing. Sometimes it is due to a reflex, especially with the placing of a feeding tube or when the baby is trying to have a stool.
Is all apnea due to prematurity? No, apnea of prematurity is by far the most common cause of apnea in a premature infant. However, apnea can be caused or increased by many problems including infection, low blood sugar, patent ductus arteriosus, seizures, high or low body temperature, brain injury or insufficient oxygen.
Why do premature babies have apnea? Premature babies have immature respiratory centers in the brain. Preemies normally have bursts of big breaths followed by periods of shallow breathing or pauses. Apnea is most common when the baby is sleeping.
Will apnea of prematurity go away?

Snoring Sends a Serious Signal
Snoring can be a lot more than an irritant to bed partners and other listeners. It’s often a symptom of progressive sleep apnea syndrome, a disorder that not only stymies the snorer’s slumber but also can have serious effects on blood pressure, risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke and even mortality. Obstructive sleep apnea, the most common disorder diagnosed through sleep studies, is a condition that not only interrupts a good night’s rest but can have significant effects on blood pressure, risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, and even mortality. B. Tucker Woodson, MD , treats many snorers who suffer from sleep apnea. A Medical College of Wisconsin Associate Professor of Otolaryngology and Communication Sciences and Director of the Froedtert Center for Sleep, Dr. Woodson discussed sleep apnea and its consequences in a recent interview with HealthLink. “By far and away the most common sleep disorder that we see here (at the MCW sleep laboratory) is obstructive sleep apnea. It probably represents 80% or more of the sleep disorders that present to the physician for a sleep study,” Dr. Woodson said.

Will apnea of prematurity go away? As your baby gets older, his/her breathing will become more regular. The time course is variable. Usually apnea of prematurity markedly improves or goes away by the time the baby nears his/her due date.

Collin Anderson , an Australian Consulting Engineer and sleep apnea sufferer, believed in order to have a restful night’s sleep a mask would have to be custom made to the person’s face. After 7 years of research, development and testing, we believe we have produced the world’s best mask because of our patented design features. These features address all the problems such as leakage, pressure sores (caused by excessive strap pressure), noise, and visibility, cleaning problems, sore ear lobes, moisture and Co2 build up etc.etc. A Sleep Apnea Mask custom made to your exact facial shape. The Anderson Mask is the only one of its type available anywhere in the world.

As a comparison, conventional masks have a huge sealing area of approximately 4 square inches. This requires a heavy strap pressure and so the larger the sealing area the more strap pressure required. Your new Personally Moulded Sleep Apnea Mask is only 1/8 of the sealing area of a conventional mask therefore, a lot less strap pressure and a lot more comfort.

Sleep apnea is a serious, potentially life-threatening condition that is far more common than
Early recognition and treatment of sleep apnea is important because it may be associated with irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, heart attack, and stroke.

Who Gets Sleep Apnea?
Sleep apnea occurs in all age groups and both sexes but is more common in men (it may be underdiagnosed in women) and possibly young African Americans. It has been estimated that as many as 18 million Americans have sleep apnea. Four percent of middle-aged men and 2 percent of middle-aged women have sleep apnea along with excessive daytime sleepiness. People most likely to have or develop sleep apnea include those who snore loudly and also are overweight, or have high blood pressure, or have some physical abnormality in the nose, throat, or other parts of the upper airway. Sleep apnea seems to run in some families, suggesting a possible genetic basis..

  • Who the heck are you? What is Sleep Apnoea? How do I know if I have it? Wouldn't I know it if I woke up so often? ... Where can I find doctors/sleep centers/CPAP in my own country?
  • Who the heck are you?
My name is Doug Linder. I'm just some guy with apnoea. It's easier to tell you what I am not:
    • Most importantly, I am NOT a doctor. I do not keep lists of doctors, specialists, equipment companys, or anything like that. I can't recommend doctors or brands of CPAP machines. Sorry. I don't have a folderful of secret "cures" for apnoea that I keep away from everyone else just out of spite. The minute I hear of a new potential treatment, I put it up here. I'm not highly connected to the field of sleep medicine. Yes, I have met a few nice folks in the industry, and some of them are indeed doctors. But they don't give free, anonymous, undiagnosed medical advice over the internet, either.

    Overview of Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Approximately 30 million Americans are victims of a sleep disorder called obstructive sleep apnea . Many millions more are predisposed and have a high risk of developing the illness. If you are an adult male, the odds are about 50/50 that your breathing is not normal when you are sleeping. It is imperative that anyone who might have this problem or is predisposed, or knows someone they care about who has the problem, should have the clearest possible understanding about it.
We have dedicated this section of the web site to a crystal clear and detailed description of all aspects of obstructive sleep apnea. The section begins with an overview which will introduce the reader to this important sleep disorder. During the next several weeks we will be providing you with a more in-depth understanding of obstructive sleep apnea. Please check back to this section to view upcoming segments.

Patients as well as health care professionals should be alert to the interaction of several factors when considering treatment strategies for snoring and obstructive sleep apnea. Careful diagnosis and effective treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA, Sleep Apnea Syndrome) and snoring require attention to lifestyle, medical factors, and anatomical problems, as well as to the age and sex of the person with snoring and/or apnea. Thanksgiving dinner, or perhaps it is Christmas dinner, or Passover. Uncle Charlie (or perhaps it is Aunt Charlene) has fallen asleep, as usual, on the overstuffed chair in the living room. and everyone chuckles fondly to see him (or her) snug in front of the fire, his(her) arms resting gently on his (her) belly. Snoring up a storm. Familiar picture? Probably. Endearing, sweet Norman Rockwell scene? No. The association of this picture to a potentially life threatening disorder called Obstructive Sleep Apnea has been known for about a decade. It is only over the past several years, however, that there has been enough media coverage for the disorder called sleep apnea to have reached public awareness. By this time, the message that loud snoring can be serious not humorous has been sent into the living room by network television shows such as 20/20, 60 Minutes, the Phil Donahue Show, and even the half-time show of the Super Bowl where the players wore band-aid like devices (designed to help control snoring) on their nose to help their breathing. The full picture of what to do when sleep apnea (or an incipient sleep apnea condition such as loud snoring) is diagnosed has been less well publicized.

Sleep Apnea What is sleep apnea?
People with sleep apnea stop breathing for 10 to 30 seconds at a time while they are sleeping. These short stops in breathing can happen up to 400 times every night! If you have sleep apnea, the periods of not breathing may make you wake up from deep sleep. If you are waking up all night long, you aren't getting enough rest from your sleep. There are two kinds of sleep apnea: obstructive apnea and central apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea is the most common type. Nine out of 10 people with sleep apnea have this type of apnea. If you have this type, something is blocking the passage or windpipe (called the trachea) that brings air into your body. You keep trying to breathe, but you can't get enough air because of the blockage. Your windpipe might be blocked by your tongue, tonsils or uvula (the little piece of flesh that hangs down in the back of your throat). It might also be blocked by a large amount of fatty tissue in the throat or even by relaxed throat muscles. Central sleep apnea is rare. This type is called central apnea because it is related to the function of the central nervous system. If you have this type of apnea, the muscles you use to breathe don't get the "go-ahead" signal from your brain. Either the brain doesn't send the signal, or the signal gets interrupted.
