About Sleep Apnea
WHAT IS SLEEP APNEA? Sleep apnea is a serious, potentially life-threatening condition that is far more common than generally understood. Early recognition and treatment of sleep apnea is important because it may be associated with irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, heart attack, and stroke. Sleep apnea may be characterized by choking sensations. The frequent interruptions of deep, restorative sleep often lead to early morning headaches and excessive daytime sleepiness. Sleep apnea occurs in all age groups and both sexes, but is more common in men. People most likely to have or develop sleep apnea include those who snore loudly, are overweight, have high blood pressure, or have some physical abnormality in the nose, throat, or other parts of the upper airway. For more detailed information, go to LINKS WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS OF SLEEP APNEA? Because of the serious disturbances in their normal sleep patterns, people with sleep apnea often feel very sleepy during the day and their concentration and daytime performance suffer. The consequences of sleep apnea range from annoying to life-threatening. They could include depression, irritability, sexual dysfunction, learning and memory difficulties, and falling asleep during the day. Although it is not known with certainty if there is a cause and effect relationship, it appears that sleep apnea contributes to high blood pressure. Risk for heart attack and stroke may also increase in those with sleep apnea.

S leep Disorders: Snoring and Sleep Apnea: Snoring Snoring is an age-old problem with social consequences, including marital discord. Snoring occurs due to vibration of the tissue in the throat, usually while the patient is breathing through the mouth. Although in itself snoring is not necessarily dangerous, it may be a symptom of sleep apnea a condition which can be very dangerous. Until now, the treatment for snoring has included such techniques as behavioral modification, weight loss, dental devices, nasal strips, drugs, and major surgery. But now, the cure for snoring and many cases of sleep apnea is a simple office procedure. Sleep Apnea Sleep apnea is usually obstructive; that is, the breathing passage is blocked between the nose and the voice box. If sleep apnea is severe enough, the oxygen in the bloodstream which is reaching the brain and other vital organs may fall to dangerous levels. The site(s) or point(s) of obstruction must be diagnosed before treatment can begin. Once this is determined, treatment is targeted on relieving the obstruction. Possible Sites of Obstruction Treatment options for snoring and sleep apnea include: Weight reduction Avoidance of alcoholic beverages before retiring Nasal CPAP, in which an appliance forces oxygen at positive pressure into the patient's airway during sleep

    Sleep Apnea: Introduction and Diagnosis
    Introduction:
Sleep apnea is a disorder in which there is a break or pause (apnea) in breathing during sleep. There are two basic types of apnea: Obstructive : An obstructive apnea occurs when the body (especially the chest walls and abdomen) attempts to breathe in, but the air flow is blocked by some obstruction in the upper portion of the airway. Central : A central apnea is also marked by the absence of air flow into the lungs. However, unlike an obstructive apnea, there is no attempt of movement at the chest wall. These apneas are felt to originate in the part of the brain responsible for controlling respiration. The discussions here deal predominately with obstructive sleep apnea (abbreviated OSA). This site also contains information on snoring and on treatment of obstructive sleep apnea
Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), A Brief Description:
OSA is a disorder in which there is partial or complete obstruction of the upper airway during sleep. While sleeping the muscles of the upper airway relax, and in some individuals this relaxation is so pronounced it produces partial collapse of the throat. Typical symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea are daytime sleepiness, awakening at night with a choking sensation, morning headaches, restlessness during sleep, and snoring. During sleep, the individual with OSA may block off his or her airway 30 to 100 times an hour. Each blockage causes them to leave the deep stages of sleep and partially awaken until the airway is reopened. As a result, the sleep is severely disrupted and the patient will feel sleepy throughout the day. The daytime sleepiness can be so severe that individuals will fall asleep while driving or while sitting in a chair.

    General Definitions
    of Sleep Apnea
Sleep apnea, which is spelled apnoea or apnœa in the United Kingdom, is a disorder that affects many people while they sleep, making it a silent stalker. When a person has an "apnea," they actually stop breathing. The word apnea, which comes from the Greek language, means "without breath." An apnea's duration, otherwise known as an apneic event, is measured during a sleep study. Doctors have this habit of calling it by its technical name, a Polysomnogram, or a PSG, for short. During the sleep study, for an "event" to be classified as an apnea, it must last at least ten seconds. Some apneics are known to have apneas that last longer than 90 seconds. There are three types of apnea: Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Central Sleep Apnea, and Mixed Sleep Apnea. Obstructive Sleep Apnea is most prevalent. Most people with sleep apnea have no idea they actually suffer from the disorder. It is generally characterized by loud snoring, but the chief warning sign is the person stops breathing during their sleep, usually followed by a gasp, snort, or gurgling sound, which ends the event. Some severe apneics actually have more than 100 events each hour, translating into a night of very little, yet very disturbed sleep.
