DESCRIPTION
Currently, there are 26 personnel, including 11 Ph.D.-level scientists, in the center. Facilities include a 92-earthen pond research station, a 40-pool experimental unit, and a hatchery building for spawning and tank studies. Additional laboratory facilities include an aquarium-wet laboratory, water quality and fish nutrition laboratories, in addition to a teaching laboratory. The center also operates a 200-acre demonstration farm of commercial-scale ponds in Lonoke, Arkansas. The Arkansas aquaculture industry provides several scholarships for UAPB fisheries students and in-kind support for research and extension programs. In-kind support includes donations of fish, feed, and equipment for particular studies, as well as farm inputs for on-farm demonstrations and trials. The partnership provides for a comprehensive support structure for the growing aquaculture industry and ready access to research-based solutions to challenges faced by the industry. UAPB and USDA benefit from the rapid adoption and high impact of their research programs, and students benefit from experience with and exposure to the aquaculture industry.

Faculty Experience
Professional staff of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) Aquaculture/Fisheries Center of Excellence have long-term and short-term experience in many countries on Peace Corps in-country assignments, teaching/training, project development, extension, and research. Aquaculture is a major focus of the Office of International Programs (OIP) within the School of Agriculture, Fisheries and Home Human Sciences at UAPB. The United States Department of Agriculture-Agriculture Research Service (USDA-ARS) established its first co-location at an 1890 university at UAPB in July, 1994, and designated it the Agriculture Systems Research Unit. Personnel consists of 11 Ph.D. faculty, and 6 M.S. and 3 B.S. staff, and two support personnel. Specific areas of expertise include pond and hatchery production of aquatic species, water quality, fish and crustacean nutrition, health of aquatic species, economics and marketing, aquatic ecology, environmental toxicology, oceanography, and marine fish ecology. Professional staff of the aquaculture unit have more than 20 years of long-term experience and more than 24 months of short-term experience in 22 countries. The UAPB offers undergraduate degrees in Fisheries Biology and will soon begin the first master's degree program in Aquaculture/Fisheries in Arkansas. Faculty currently serve on graduate committees of Auburn University, the University of Missouri-Columbia, and the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville. Besides offering opportunities for graduate student research to domestic and international students, the Center offers group or individual training on campus in aquaculture, with the highest level of focus in (1) warm-water aquaculture; (2) hatchery management; (3) fish nutrition; (4) water quality; (5) aquatic animal health; (6) pond and facility construction; and (7) aquaculture extension.

The center, and its divisions, are maintained by the Department of Animal Sciences at Purdue University and provide a gateway to worldwide resources in aquaculture. Users will find an alphabetical listing of the fifty states, and listings of aquaculture contacts are found by selecting the state of choice. Entries within the records provide: name of individual (first, last); e-mail address; and area of interest. Listings within states are alphabetized for easy evaluation and use. A select group of entries will feature a biographical data sheet, providing a business address, educational information, as well as research and/or teaching specialities. The e-mail directory is maintained by Mark Einstein, Department of Animal Sciences; Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana.
