Anthropology
Anthropology represents a broad field of study encompassing four subdivisions: cultural anthropology, linguistic anthropology, prehistoric archeology, and biological anthropology. Courses listed below offer comprehensive approaches to anthropology's diverse subject matter and provide an important component of a liberal arts education for both majors and non-majors. A major will gain excellent preparation for graduate study in anthropology or as part of a pre-professional education. Additionally, anthropology majors can gain preparation for a wide variety of careers. Students majoring in anthropology are strongly urged to pursue work beyond the introductory level (101, 102, 103) in each of the subfields.

  • WHAT IS ANTHROPOLOGY
"Anthropology"from the Greek anthropos ("human") and logia ("science") is the scientific study of humankind, from its beginnings millions of years ago to the present day. Its subject matter is both exotic (initiation rites of the Ganda of Uganda) and commonplace (anatomy of the human hand). Its focus is both sweeping and microscopic. Anthropologists may study the environmental impact of a new industry, the folklore of West Virginia, primate disease patterns, prehistoric cultures in North Carolina, or secret societies. A common thread links these vastly different projects. The common goal is to advance knowledge of who we are and how we came to be that way. Because the subject matter of anthropology is so broad, an undergraduate major in anthropology is part of a broad liberal arts background for men and women interested in any career, including law, environmental studies, government, business, international relations, medicine, and in just being a well-educated citizen. With the current intensity of global actions and interactions and the increasing cultural diversity of our own society, anthropology becomes even more relevant to our lives. In these times of narrow specialization, anthropological study is refreshingly broad. This focus on comprehensive breadth is especially valuable to students seeking to develop expertise in planning, decision-making, and management. Anthropology's scope and intellectual perspective prepares students to make objective, far-sighted decisions at the professional level in any career field, either at home or abroad.

    Statement of Purpose:
Preserve and display local history. The Pioneer Trails Regional Museum was founded in 1991 to preserve the unique history of southwest North Dakota. The region's history includes many fascinating aspects, including some of the world's best fossil and dinosaur dig sites; Native American artifacts, including rare petroglyphs preserved in the Cave Hills; and the entire history of the region's homesteaders, from the frist settlers and cowboys through the dust bowl and World War II.
The Pioneer Trails Regional Museum (PTRM) has a comprehensive paleontology department and is an active field museum. The museum is less than 30 miles (48km) from some of the world's best dinosaur and fossil bed. Throughout the summer, the PTRM's paleontologists lead field tours into the badlands where you can help them dig for dinosaurs and other fossils.
    • A complete paleontology department, including life-sized dinosaur skeletons found in the area.
