The Pacific Ocean lies to the west. There are three natural zones, running roughly north to south: Costa (Coast), Sierra (the Highlands) and Selva (Amazonian Jungle). The Costa region, which contains Lima (the capital) is a narrow coastal plain consisting of large tracts of desert broken by fertile valleys. The cotton, sugar and rice plantations and most of the so far exploited oil fields lie in this area. The Sierra contains the Andes, with peaks over 6000m (20,000ft), most of the country's mineral resources (silver, zinc, lead, copper and gold) and the greater part of its livestock. The

The National Museum began early to be the depository of collections, now become the largest in the country, of objects illustrating North American archaeology-that is the state of aboriginal culture before it became modified by European influence. These prehistoric relics, derived from mounds and other ancient burial-places, on or below the surface of the ground, in caves, shellheaps, etc., are made of chipped and ground stone, copper, bone, horn, shell, clay, and to a small extent of wood and vegetable fibres. "Similarity of shape afforded the principal guidance in arranging these specimens, many of which leave a wide scope for conjecture as to the uses to which they were applied by the makers." Three separate series have been laid out for exhibition in the great upper hall of the old Smithsonian building by Dr. Charles Rau, who is curator. First a synoptical collection illustrating European archaeology, by means of typical specimens arranged serially in the circle of table-cases occupying the center of the room; this should be examined first, as it condenses into brief space the whole range of prehistoric workmanship. The general collection illustrating the archaeology of all North America forms the second, and most important part of the exhibit; the third part being independent special collections relating to limited localities. The general collection occupies the table-cases on the floor and proceeds in classification as the cases are numbered, from 1 upwards; the wall cases being devoted to the special local exhibits.

TITLE: The National Park Service Archeology and Ethnography Program ACCESS: http://www.cr.nps.gov/aad/index.htm The Archeology and Ethnography Program is an important component of our National Park Service. The anthropologists in this program provide guidance to decision-makers regarding the preservation of the diverse cultures and cultural heritage found within our parks. The program originates from federal and agency mandates and has two primary objectives. The first is to preserve and protect the 6-7 million archaeological sites located on public land both within and outside of National Park borders. The second is to identify and represent contemporary people with cultural or historical attachments to National Park land or who rely on it for subsistence. The program's Web site is informative and speaks to several audiences: National Park Service administrators, anthropologists, students and the general public. It is clearly intended to educate and involve as many interested parties as possible. It offers online professional training through self-paced tutorials. These courses cover archaeological interpretation and technical site management, as well as ethnographic assessment. The training is geared to the National Park Service staff and management. But, it is equally instructive for amateurs and the general public. The site has a special area dedicated to the public. There, visitors are encouraged to explore, learn and participate. Pathfinders point to anthropological sites and projects, museums, exhibits and other interesting links. Educational opportunities are presented and volunteerism is encouraged. Teachers will find curriculum-building materials and instructional tools. To further inform its broad audience, extensive bibliographies linking to the full-text of articles, laws, standards, reports and technical briefs related to the programs mission are scattered through the site.

Animals In The Kelsey
The animals in this particular Kelsey Museum exhibit range from representations of familiar fish to mythical beasts. Students at the University of Michigan's Department of Classical Studies used all these artifacts to explore and present different aspects of animals in antiquity: animals as food, laborers, entertainment, pets, sacrificial victims, and symbols of power and terror. Community Outreach Some sixth-grade students in Ann Arbor used the Animals exhibit to learn problem-solving and information-seeking skills, how to research the role of animals in the ancient world, something about how exhibitions are created and to create an artifact of their own.
