Archery is one of the oldest arts of ancient times which is still practiced today. From its first development until the 1500s, the bow was man's constant companion and has been the most widely used of all weapons in recorded history. The bow allowed the prehistoric human to become the most efficient hunter on earth, providing him safety, food and raw materials such as bone, sinew and hide. From that time on, archery has played an important role in many of the world's civilizations. Starting with the reign of William the Conqueror, the bow was England's principal weapon of national defense for several centuries. Around the year 1200, Genghis Khan and his Mongol hordes conquered much of the known world employing short, powerful bows. For Native Americans, archery was the means of subsistence and existence during the days of English and later American colonization. Finally, after the bow's replacement by firearms as a weapon of war, archery became a favored sport, thus securing its continuous practice throughout history. According to Encyclopedia Britannica, archery's importance as a cultural advance ranks with the development of speed and the art of making fire. The use of the bow appears in folklore from over 3000 years ago, although its invention probably predates that era.

In those four Games, it was possible for an archer to compete in numerous events and win several medals. Hubert van Innis (BEL) is the most decorated archer in Olympic history, winning six gold medals and three silvers in 1900 and 1920. Archery was re-introduced to the Olympic program in 1972 with an individual event for men and for women and John Williams and Doreen Wilber of the USA captured the gold medals. The discovery of the first stone arrowheads in Africa tends to indicate that the bow and arrow were invented there, maybe as early as 50,000 BC. It was probably developed in conjunction with the invention of the spear thrower. A short bow would be a better hunting weapon when used to stalk animals in wooded areas, rather than carry around long spears. The shape of the earliest bows can only be guessed at, as broken or worn out bows would probably end up on the cooking fire , reshaped into different tools or just thrown away. Back to Top

    History
    The Organisation
The Grand National Archery Society is the governing body for the sport of archery in Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The Society serves nine Regional Societies which are represented on the National Council along with the President and Vice presidents. The National Council is the overall controlling body for The Grand National Archery Society, which in turn delegates work in various areas of the sport to a structured base of committees. The Society's motto reads "Union, Trueheart and Courtesy" The distinction of a sport can be traced back to its lineage. Archery is a most ancient sport, a sport of both Kings and Queens and is today the only sport providing the official royal bodyguard to the monarch. The skilful use of the medieval longbow at Crecy (1346) and at Agincourt (1415) laid down its mark in the annals of history and today we retain that history and balance it alongside a modern Olympic sport.
    Its History
The Grand National Archery Society was originally founded in 1861, at meeting held at the Adelphi Hotel in Liverpool, following events initiated in 1843, when the first Grand National Archery Meeting was held on the Knavesmire at York. Click here for an article on - The Origins Of The Grand National Archery Meeting The oldest recorded archery event in the British Isles occurred in Scotland. This is the "Papingo" shoot at Kilwinning in Ayrshire for which records go back to 1483. The Royal Toxophilites (f. 1781), Woodmen of Arden (f. 1785) and the Royal Company of Archers (f. 1676) in Scotland survive to this day to illustrate some of the ceremonial and historical activities of the earliest sporting societies.

Fire. Speech. The bow and arrow.
They have been compared as three of the great cultural advances by early man, giant leaps for mankind in another era.
The earliest artwork showing the bow and arrow has turned up in Egypt, drawn about 5000 years ago, although historians date it's invention back at least 25,000 years. The Egyptians used bows to hunt, but also as a weapon of war. Before long the bow and arrow was added to the armoury of civilisations throughout the Ancient world, from Mediterranean to the Far East, Africa and the Americas.
Around 1500BC the Assyrians developed the recurve bow, whose ability to bend back provided greater power and easier handling. The recurve bow has been refined somewhat since then, with fibreglass, carbon graphite and aluminium now the materials of choice, but the basic design principle is the same as that used in today's Olympic archery competitions.
Later, as gunpowder displaced the bow and arrow as the world's primary weapon, archery became more and more a purely sporting pastime.

Contact Us INTRODUCTION TO ARCHERY AUSTRALIA TARGET ARCHERY This the most commonly practiced form of archery worldwide and is practiced at most Archery Australia clubs. Target tournaments are conducted regularly and held both indoors and outdoors. Shooting distances vary from 18 metres (indoor) to 90 metres (outdoor), with target sizes being 40 centimeters for indoors and either 80 or 122 centimeters for outdoors. Targets are five colours with each colour being divided into 2 to provide 10 scoring zones. The innermost ring is given a point value of 10, down to the outermost ring with a value of 1. Target rounds involve shooting a set number of arrows over several distances and target face sizes. Indoor events involve shooting a total of either 30 or 60 arrows, with outdoor events shooting either 72, 90, 120 or 144 arrows FIELD ARCHERY Field archery is a challenging outdoor discipline in which the archer takes on the terrain as well as the target. Field archery is a combination of archery, golf, and bush walking. A course is set up in a bush land setting taking advantage of hills, slopes, angles and light and shade.

    History
    Overview
At one time or another, archery has been identified as one of mankind's three great advances. The other two advances are said to be the development of fire and speech. As an archer, I would strongly support this opinion, but I'm sure there are many other developments which would also rank alongside archery. In any case, the history of archery is indeed great and stretches back well over 5,000 years. Although the invention of archery has been dated to as long ago as 23,000 years BC, the earliest known artwork depicting bow and arrow is located in Egypt, and has been dated to around 3,000 BC. From these and other resources, it seems clear that the Egyptians used archery for both hunting and making war. There are also clear indications of the use of bows and arrows throughout the ancient world including Africa, America and the Far East. One of the major historical developments of archery was the invention of the recurve bow by the Assyrians around 1,500 BC. This new design provided greater power and significantly improved the handling and efficiency of the bow. This basic recurve design has been enhanced and refined many times throughout history, culminating in the modern Olympic recurve bow. In Europe during the Middle Ages, the longbow was supreme. This formidable weapon is said to have played a major role in the conflicts that beset Europe throughout the Middle Ages, and in particular has been identified as a major contributor in the battles of Crecy (1346), Poitiers (1356) and

Archery is the earliest recorded sport : flint arrowheads dating from 50,000 BC have been found in Africa, and prehistoric cave paintings show bows and arrows in use, although the archers were more concerned with hunting for food and defence than seeing who could hit the target in the centre!
Later civilisations such as the Egyptians, Hittites and the Assyrians, with more leisure time on their hands, created wonderful murals depicting hunting scenes with chariots and archers in pursuit of big game - lions, antelopes etc. - and target archery is mentioned in the Greek myths when Odysseus had to prove who he was when he returned from his travels by shooting an arrow through a line of axe heads.
The bow and arrow evolved into a formidable weapon of war, and the Hundred Years' War in Europe was dominated by the excellence of the English longbowmen (who were actually mostly Welsh...) who, although vastly outnumbered by armoured cavalry, were instrumental in routing the French armies in the battles of Poitiers, Crecy and Agincourt.
From 1330 to 1414, all other sports were banned because they diverted time from archery and a royal decree of 1363 required all Englishmen to practice archery on Sundays and holidays. Golf and football were banned in 1457 and the new game of cricket was made illegal in 1477, because they were interfering with compulsory archery practice, and to counteract an increasing shortage of bowstaves, yew trees were planted in every English churchyard to provide wood for the bows. The development of gunpowder and firearms led to a steady decline in the bow and arrow as a weapon of war and the last battle to use archers was in 1644, but recreational use continued to advance and by about 1600, three kinds of shooting were practised in England, and they still survive today.

Also, archery became the favorite sport in the ancient world, historians have reported, when it was introduced in the Greek Olympic games in 776 B.C., as portrayed by effigies of Hercules. Much later, it was immortalized by the anecdotes of Robin Hood and William Tell. Only in recent history and after the advent of firearms did archery become known as a major sporting event and that thru its introduction in the Olympics of 1900. Modern-day archery competition was first introduced in 1972, and later in Seoul in 1988, and included tournaments for men and women. The international governing body for archery, FITA, was founded in 1931. It now counts over 100 members worldwide. The current president is Mr. James Easton. Local Events:

Olympics History Origin Of Modern Olympic Games Inflaming the inspiration and enthusiasm from the Ancient Olympic Games , which were conducted every four years between 776 BC and 393 AD in Olympia, Greece until forbidden by Emperor of Greece in 393 AD, the Modern Olympic Games were started in 1896 at Athens, Greece under the initiation and leadership of a French educationalist Baron Pierre de Coubertin. DISCIPLINES Archery: Like so many other sports Archery is a game of Egyption origin. It originated probably in the pre-historic period through primitive men, who used it either for self - defence or for food by killing animals. In the later centuries men used bows. Ancient Hindu Epics, tell of the heroic wars where Lord Rama and Arjuna, to quote a few, played important roles in the field of Archer which gradually turned into a discipline in the Modern Olympics. Although Archery featured in the Modern Olympics in 1900 at Paris, 1904 at St. Luis, 1908 at London and 1920 Antwerp Olympic Games, it was discontinued till the 1972 Munich Olympic Games.
