More than 35 sports events will be showcased at this year's Sydney Olympic Games. Some events, like the triathlon, are barely 30 years old while others, like archery, have have a much longer history. In ancient times, the practice of archery was important to the survival of humankind. In modern times, it has become a challenging sport practiced by people all over the world.
    This Week:
    The History of Archery
The bow and arrow is the most widely used weapon in all of recorded history. It allowed prehistoric (from a time before history was recorded) humans to be good hunters and gave them the means to protect themselves. Many historians believe that the invention of the bow and arrow is as important to the development of humankind as the ability to create fire. The bow and arrow has undergone many transformations. In 3500 B.C., Egyptians used bows that were as tall as they were. Almost 2,000 years later, bows had become shorter and more curved. In 1200 B.C., archers developed the skill of shooting from moving chariots, and in A.D. 500, the Romans began to draw the arrow to their faces instead of their chests, which gave them better aim.

Olympic Archery Events Archery is one of the oldest arts, and the earliest drawings of a bow and arrow date back about 5000 years ago in Egypt. The bow and arrow are considered one of the most important cultural advances made by man, and were originally used for hunting and as weapons of war. The Egyptians innovated arrowheads, originally constructed of flint but then were later made of bronze. Around 1500 BC, the Assyrians developed the shorter recurve bow, which provided more power and easier handling. The same basic design principle is used in today's Olympic archery competitions, but the recurve has been refined, with fiberglass, carbon graphite and aluminum now being the materials of choice. As gunpowder replaced the bow and arrow as the world's primary weapon, archery became more of a sporting pastime. In 1900, the sport first appeared in the Olympics Games in Paris. It was also contested at the Games of 1904, 1908 and 1920. Archery events in these early Olympic Games varied widely.

    Early History
Archery is one of the most ancient of sports. During the paleolithic era (35,000 to 8,000 B.C.), the use of bow and arrow for hunting probably developed independently in many places throughout the world. By definition, there's no documentary evidence of archery competitions during the prehistoric era. But certainly, during that long expanse of time, now and then some ancient hunter who boasted about his skill with the bow must have been challenged to a contest by someone equally proud of his skill. There probably wasn't much to brag about. While an arrow can be launched by a bow with greater speed than any missile can be thrown, primitive bows are not very accurate. Western movies greatly exaggerated the skill of Native American bowmen; their hunting ability was based much more on skill and stealth in tracking than on marksmanship. The bow first entered military history in 2,340 B.C., when Sargon of Akkad in northern Babylonia conquered the Sumerians of southern Babylonia with an infantry made up mostly of archers. From that time on, many ancient peoples used archery in warfare in varying ways and with varying degrees of success.

Welcome to ARCHERY South Australia Inc.
Home of all things South Australian, in archery. ARCHERY SA (or as it was known until 1993, the Archery Society of South Australia) was formed in 1947. However, archery is recorded as having begun in South Australia with Adelaide's founding father, Colonel William Light in the early 1800s. His bow and arrows are still held in a collection by the City of Adelaide.
Today it is one of the strongest State archery bodies in Australia. Its tournaments' base is the beautiful Victoria Park Racecourse, in the Adelaide Parklands, which has been the venue for countless Junior and Open National Championships, was the venue for the International Archery Federation's (FITA's) World Target Archery Championships in 1987 and hosted the Australian Masters' Games in 1989 and 1999. ARCHERY SA also is involved with the SA Sports Institute at Kidman Park using the oval area there for State Squad Training, other developmental work and some tournaments.
As South Australia's principle archery organisation, we welcome all and any new Clubs and enquiries.

The ARCO Training Center is the first USOC training facility to be master-planned from the ground up and is dedicated to the development of America's future Olympic athletes. The year-round, warm-weather facility in Chula Vista, California, was a gift to the United States Olympic Committee from the San Diego National Sports Training Foundation, a group of dedicated business and community leaders, and volunteers who raised the funds to build the Center.
Through programs developed by the national governing bodies of each sport, and estimated 4,000 athletes each year will receive the coaching, support and facilities necessary to be their best. These numbers are increasing each year.
The Center, which officially opened in June 1995, not only benefits thousands of Olympic hopefuls, but serves local youth and citizens nationwide. The ARCO Training Center has been designed to accommodate thousands of daily visitors with escorted tours of our nation's state-of-the-art national Training Center at no charge.
Thousands of student athletes and coaches also gain access to the Center for clinics and competitions when venues are not being utilized by Olympic athletes-in-training.
