Early History
A rchery is one of the most ancient of sports. During the paleolithic era (35,000 to 8,000 B.C.), the use of bow and arrow for hunting probably developed independently in many places throughout the world. By definition, there's no documentary evidence of archery competitions during the prehistoric era. But certainly, during that long expanse of time, now and then some ancient hunter who boasted about his skill with the bow must have been challenged to a contest by someone equally proud of his skill. There probably wasn't much to brag about. While an arrow can be launched by a bow with greater speed than any missile can be thrown, primitive bows are not very accurate. Western movies greatly exaggerated the skill of Native American bowmen; their hunting ability was based much more on skill and stealth in tracking than on marksmanship. The bow first entered military history in 2,340 B.C., when Sargon of Akkad in northern Babylonia conquered the Sumerians of southern Babylonia with an infantry made up mostly of archers. From that time on, many ancient peoples used archery in warfare in varying ways and with varying degrees of success.

Despite the Archery event already appearing in the 1900 Olympic Games, it was thrown out of the competition in 1920 due to the disparity between different countries' regulations. As from 1972, various countries came together to form the International Archery Federation (FITA) which allows 128 men and women archers to participate over 6 days of competition both singly and in teams. Combining precision, a steady hand and strength, archers shoot at a 1.22 m target 70 m away.
Facilities Main: The requirements of this competition, as established by the FITA, are as follows: a grass field facing North and measuring 170 metres wide x 150 m long. This field must have adequate protection and enough space behind the targets for the arrows to come to a stop as well as a protected area for judges and the media. A minimum seating capacity of 5000 is recommended. Warm-up facilities:
The warm-up facility must be a south-facing grass field measuring 90 m wide x 150 m long, containing 20 evenly spread targets in accordance with FITA regulations. The competition area must be easily accessible from this point for the athletes and their delegations.

Did You Know?

As legend has it, Robin Hood once won an archery contest by splitting the arrow of a competitor with his own arrow. That act is still known as a "Robin Hood."
Archery was regularly featured as an Olympic sport from 1900 to 1920, but was removed from competition until the 1972 Olympics in Munich.
It takes a keen eye steady hands and nerves of steel to succeed at archery. Competitors pull back on their bows and fire arrows up to 240 kilometers per hour (about 150 miles per hour) at their targets, which are 70 meters away. The round targets each contain additional concentric circles, which separate the target into ten scoring zones . At ten points, the center zone, or "bullseye" is worth the most points. Archers shoot 12 "ends" (rounds) of six arrows each.

Greeting Cards Sports (Hometown Sports Story) Devin Weiser, 11, of the Solano Aquatics Sea Otters swim team, captured one fourth-, one fifth- and two six-place finishes at the Junior Olympic meet. (Photo by Christine Baker) Sea Otters make splash at meet By Bob Greene The Sea Otters played host to the Sierra-Nevada Junior Olympic swim competition last weekend, and led by a second-place showing from Justin Lomas, it walked away with seventh place in the 28-team meet at Solano Community College. Bradley Louie of the Fairfield Aquatic Club tied Lomas for second at that age group. "It went really well, that was awesome," SASO president Dennis Hooten said. "We are a pretty small team in the grand scheme of things and to be that small and finish that high is a testament to our coaches and what they teach our kids." A total of 308 swimmers from 28 teams as far away as Redding and Grass Valley made their way to Solano County for the three-day meet that saw the host team post a top-10 finish for the second consecutive year.
