B.C. Military Usage
From prehistoric times, the bow was a principal weapon of war and of the hunt throughout the world, except in Australia. Some authorities date the origin of archery as early as the Aurignacian period, about 25,000 years before the modern era. The earliest people known to have used the bow and arrow were the ancient Egyptians, who adopted the weapon at least 5000 years ago. In the time of the earliest pharaohs, the Egyptians practiced archery in hunting, as well as in warfare against the ancient Persians, who were then equipped only with spears and slingshots. Recreational archery was also practiced, among the ancient Egyptians and Greeks, one instance of the latter being the competition in which Odysseus won the hand of Penelope. Soon after, however, the bow and arrow was used extensively in the ancient world. The Assyrians and Babylonians depended on the weapon, and the Old Testament refers several times to archery as a characteristic skill of the ancient Hebrews.

32. History
When the Europeans colonized North America, they began to adopt someNative American bow styles, though archery remained recreational.
http://www3.chass.ncsu.edu/PA540/acdeyoun/history.html
When you pick up a bow and shoot your first arrow, keep in mind that you are participating in an activity that has been around for about twenty thousand years. Cave paintings in Europe depicting the bow and arrow have been dated, and found to be at least twenty thousand years old! Although in modern days archery is mostly a recreational sport, it used to be essential for the survival of humankind in many ancient cultures around the world. Different cultures made their bows and arrows in different ways, some ways being more successful than others. Ancient humans used their bows and arrows to take down prey from a distance, which gave them a measure of safety that didn't exist with the use of a spear or a knife. Bow and arrow designs reflected the materials available to the makers, and the way the bow was used. After being created as a hunting tool, the bow began to play a role in war. Bows were designed for use on horseback, and for shooting distant human targets. For example, short bows, though less powerful and accurate, were easier to manipulate from horseback, while the more accurate longbows were used to defend fortified areas from a distance. The Ancient Egyptians first established the bow an arrow as their weapon of choice at around 3500 B.C. Their bows were nearly as tall as they were, and they used flint and bronze to fashion their arrowheads. Even today, traditional archers practice the ancient art of flintknapping to fashion beautiful arrowheads of flint and other soft rocks and minerals.

Introducing Youth to Shooting Through Archery By Lloyd W. Brown Jr.,
National Coach, National Archery Association
Assistant Coach, U.S. Olympic Archery Team (This article is reprinted from the Third National Shooting Range Symposium, 1996 with permission from International Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies, Wildlife Management Institute and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.)
Archery is a great way to introduce kids to the shooting sports. Every kid wants to shoot a bow and arrow, and they really love doing it. Archery is widely accepted by parents and youth organizations. It's a great lifetime sport for men, women and kids. It's something the whole family can do together. It's easy to sell parents, teachers and youth organizations on the advantages and benefits for kids of shooting a bow and arrow. Those benefits include the challenges of an Olympic sport, building confidence, self-esteem and concentration skills. I like to tell parents that the skills that I teach their kids in archery can be used to prepare for a math test or job interview. It also helps them increase upper body strength.

Archery is Recognized in Minnesota
To say that archery had it's day at the Minnesota State capitol would be a lie. Behind the half hour shooting range presentation before the Legislative Commission on Minnesota Resources (LCMR), were hundreds of hours of preparation by folks from both the public and private sectors. That day at the capital was not just one day or even several weeks, but was a decade in the making.
The LCMR was created in 1963, to make funding recommendations for special natural resource projects. These projects help maintain and enhance Minnesota's natural resources. Since 1963, LCMR has appropriated over $493 million for approximately 1175 projects. Funds go toward things like fish, wildlife and native plant habitat projects, environmental education, water issues, and recreation and natural systems. The shooting range proposal fell under the area of recreation.
With Pittman Robertson (PR) monies largely being allocated to wildlife biology and habitats, the firearms and archery industries have seen a proportionately small return on the investment they pay into the PR program. Federal funding for Minnesota Firearm Safety Education ended in 1997, which sent the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources scurrying for substitute funding. About that time, Captain Jeff Thelen joined the DNR and in turn teamed with DNR Federal Aid Coordinator and grant writer, Chuck Niska, to obtain funding for firearms ranges. In 1998, they requested $960,000 from the LCMR for the improvement and maintenance of firearms ranges. They obtained $350,000 and through an advisory group, sifted through the more than 63 organizations who made application. In 2000, one million dollars was requested, and $910,000 was appropriated.
