Wright worked for Silsbee for about a year before he left to take a better paying drafting job with Louis Sullivan and Dankmar Adler, who were working on the design of the Auditorium Theater in Chicago at the time. Wright referred to Sullivan as his Lieber Meister (beloved master) and was the only architect that Wright would acknowledge had an influence on him. The basis for Wright’s future work was born out of the idea and philosophy of Sullivan’s that "form follows function". He stayed with Adler and Sullivan until 1893 when a dispute over his acceptance of a growing number of independent commissions led Sullivan to fire him. In 1889, Wright met and married his first of three wives, Catherine Lee Clark Tobin. He also borrowed $5000 from his then employer, Louis Sullivan, to purchase a lot in Oak Park, Illinois and build his first house. Frank and Catherine raised six children together in the house that he used as an architectural laboratory, a building that saw many changes and additions as he developed his Prairie style of architecture. After leaving the employ of Adler and Sullivan, Wright opened his own office in the Schiller building in downtown Chicago, sharing space with Cecil Corwin. In 1894 he relocated his office to the 11

Frank Lloyd Wright: A Madison Success Story By Rob Nelson Architecture is the triumph of the Human Imagination over materials, methods, and men, to put man into possession of his own Earth. It is at least the geometric pattern of things, of life, of the human and social world. It is at best that magic framework of reality that we sometimes touch upon when we use the word 'order'. Frank Lloyd Wright, 1930, 1937 Frank Lloyd Wright was an extraordinary designer. Wright studied civil engineering at UW-Madison. Much later, the people of Madison wanted him to design a convention center and in 1938, he did. The building was to be named Monona Terrace, located on Lake Monona. Unfortunately, plans for the building lay unused until the early 1990's, when a group of citizens decided it was time to take action. The final project will be completed on July 1, 1997, just in time for the Fourth of July celebration. Wright led an intriguing life as an architect. Wright started his career in Chicago, in 1887, as a draftsman for the firm of Adler and Sullivan. Through hard work, he was eventually appointed head of residential designs. However, after working at the firm for about twelve years, it was discovered that he was designing houses of his own, and he was fired. Turning his failure into success, Wright opened his own firm in 1893. Forty-nine buildings were designed and built in a span of eight years.

First Prize - Walter Burley Griffin Walter Burley Griffin is chiefly remembered for his design for Australia's National Capital, even though it has scarcely been realized in the detail he envisaged. The essential elements - the great triangle of avenues, the Land Axis, the Lake and the use of the topography to dramatise the city's development - have endured in the heart of Canberra which has grown to more than four times the population of the city he had planned. Griffin worked as an architect in three continents - America, Australia, and India - but apart from a few distinctive houses, a university college, several incinerators and some office buildings, he has left little behind other than his design for Canberra to demonstrate his genius. Griffin was born on 24 November 1876 at Maywood, Chicago, the eldest son of four children born to George Griffin and Estelle Burley. His father was a young insurance broker and city councillor who was able to provide a comfortable upbringing for his son. In 1892, when Griffin was 16, the family moved to the rural suburb of Elmhurst and Griffin was able to frequently visit the Columbian Exposition in Chicago, being held to mark the 400th anniversary of the discovery of Americas. His mother Carol, taught while taking care of the household and three sons; his father Eugene studied architecture at the University of Pennsylvania. Eugene worked for several firms in Cleveland, finally as a partner in charge of hospital design at Dalton and Dalton (later Dalton, Little Newport). Frank Lloyd Wright was his model architect, and Wright's books were almost the only architecture texts in the house. Fisher drove from Cincinnati to Los Angeles in the summer of 1971 and entered the UCLA Graduate School of Architecture and Urban Planning. Frank Gehry's 1975 lecture at UCLA connected architecture to abstract art for Fisher in a profound and distinct way. Fisher worked in Gehry's office from 1978 through 1980 on such projects as Mid-Atlantic Toyota, the De Menil townhouse, Santa Monica Place, the Cabrillo Marine Museum, and Arts Park (a collaboration between Gehry and Lawrence Halprin).
