Golf Course Design Driving the Green: The Making of a Golf Course
Written by John Strawn
A slow-driving account of the development and building of Ironhorse, a "country club community" in West Palm Beach. ``Designing a golf course,'' Strawn, a devoted golfer and former construction entrepreneur, is told, ``is five percent common sense and ninety-five percent drainage.'' The Ironhorse property, a flat 350 acres in the Florida wetlands, presented an array of challenges to golf-course architect Arthur Hills. Golf Course Design
Written by Robert Muir Graves (Editor), Geoffrey S. Cornish
Golf course construction is burgeoning in the US and worldwide. Since 1990, an average of more than 350 new or expanded courses have opened annually in the US, and 1,600 course are planned or under construction. This book covers all aspects of golf course design and construction. Golf Course Development and Real Estate

43. Survey Results From Practicing Information Architecture SIG At CHI 2001
What resources (books, magazines, web sites, etc.) have the most impact on how youpractice information architecture? books, Journals, magazines, Proceedings.
Keith Instone
Practicing IA SIG
Survey Results
The purpose of the survey was to learn about the type of person who would come to a session about information architecture at a CHI conference. We received 57 semi-completed surveys. We asked the SIG attendees a series of 7 questions that were related to the background, education, resources, and tools that support their IA work. See ACIA's IAsk for other IA surverys. This is a short summary of the results of the survey, with a lot of links.
What is your organization, city/state, and type of organization?
Most SIG attendees were from the US, with some nice representation from the Netherlands, Canada, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and Switzerland. We all come from a variety of work environments: business and technology consulting firms, academic researchers, academic employees, and Fortune 100 firms.
Who are some of the most influential people who have helped shape the way you practice IA?
Listed here are the most influential people who were listed more than once in the survey results. The full list had an interesting variety of people that included academics, mentors, consultants, colleagues and gurus/experts.
What is your educational/training in IA? What were you doing before you became/knew you were an IA?

Book Reviews Beginning MFC COM Programming
    Julian Templeman
    Wrox Press 1997
And Save up to 40% A well-written book which, as the title suggests, assumes no prior knowledge of COM-based programming technologies. Given that COM is a very complex subject, readers will definitely benefit from the book's well-organized structure. Templeman gives a fairly detailed introduction to the COM. Along the way, he ties many concepts together, such as OLE, ActiveX, Automation, etc. to explain the COM theory and methodology. The book covers the various built-in COM supports in MS Visual C++. Readers who have access to MS Visual C++, can follow its instructions and implement the examples in the book with ease. Templeman also puts together a MFC server that implements a COM to show how COM is interwoven into MFC. The book uses three chapters in explaining i) the various aspects of the OLE document servers and OLE containers, ii) how these COM components can be constructed using MFC and iii) how these components interact with each other.

49. Van Gogh Museum: Library
and all the books and magazines that he knew This collection also includes books on(classical) archaeology, topography, architecture, costume history
The Van Gogh Museum has a specialised library containing more than 23,000 documents. As well as literature about Van Gogh, there is a collection of books and magazines about the art of the period 1830–1920. Every year, the library acquires approximately 600–1,000 mainly new publications, including a large number of exhibition catalogues and artists' monographs.
Acquisition policy
The library's acquisition policy follows the policy of the Van Gogh Museum itself. The emphasis is on Western European art, and in particular on Dutch and French painting of the mid-19th to the early 20th century, the period from which most of the works in the Van Gogh Museum collection and the Museum Mesdag in The Hague – also run by the Van Gogh Museum – originate.
The museum library was actually founded before the opening of the Van Gogh Museum. The book collection of Engineer Dr. V.W. Van Gogh (1890–1978), the son of Vincent's brother Theo, and the collection of the Belgian Van Gogh expert Dr. M.E. Tralbaut (1902–1976) provided the basis of the library in 1969. At the outset, the collection centred mainly on Van Gogh, but in line with the new direction of the museum, from 1986 onwards, the library began to focus less exclusively on the artist after whom the institution is named. In professional terms, this is is a specialist library. By collecting and making accessible relevant literature, the library supports scholarly research into the life and work of Vincent van Gogh and his contemporaries.

The fund includes heterogeneous materials: books, photographs, mail, drawings and other design documents, manuscripts to be published. The books, listed and marked with the writ Mollino Archive, are integrated into the Library. Their final classification and the classification of most important sections can be made only during the exhibition on Carlo Mollino's work dated 1989, within a research convention with the Province of Turin.
In addition to the Mollino fund, some year later is added a fund gifted by Bertone office, that, among other matters, includes the structural designs of several important Turinese buildings. In 1995 the professional archive by Domenico Morelli was purchased by gift, in 1987 the archive by Franco Berlanda, whereas the Gino Salvestrini archive is about to be purchased. All these three free-lancers, architects the first two, engineer the third, are active mainly in Turin.

    • Intro
      • Patterns are a recent software engineering problem-solving discipline that emerged from the object-oriented community. Patterns have roots in many disciplines, including literate programming , and most notably in Alexander's work on urban planning and building architecture ( Alexander, 1977 ). The goal of the pattern community is to build a body of literature to support design and development in general. There is less focus on technology than on a culture to document and support sound design. Software patterns first became popular with the object-oriented Design Patterns book ( Gamma et al., 1995 ). But patterns have been used for domains as diverse as development organization and process , exposition and teaching , and software architecture . At this writing, the software community is using patterns largely for software architecture and design (A Pattern Definition by James O. Coplien , Bell Laboratories, Naperville, Illinois:) Today, the pattern discipline is supported by several small conferences, by a broad spectrum of activities at established software engineering conferences, and by a rapidly growing body of literature (ibid). Have fun with patterns and thank you for visiting this page!
