"In addition to the immediacy of its unique formal and functional qualities, the house is rich in references to historic architecture. The monumental street facade alludes to Michaelangelo's Porta Pia in Rome and the back wall of the Nymphaeum at Palladio and Alessandro Vittoria's Villa Barbaro at Maser. On the other hand, the broken pediment recalls the 'duality' of the facade of Luigi Moretti's apartment house on the Via Parioli in Rome." The Creator's Words "The architect stresses that 'The house is big as well as little, by which I mean that it this a little house with big scale. ...Outside, the manifestations of big scale are the main elements, which are big and few in number and central or symmetrical in position, as well as the simplicity and consistency of the form and silhouette of the whole....The main reason for the large scale is to counterbalance the complexity. Complexity in combination with scale in small buildings means busyness. Like the other organized complexities here, the big scale in the small building achieves tension rather than nervousness....' "

2 architecture professors design projects to transform existing buildings
Russell Fortmeyer
Kansas State Collegian For architects Robert Condia and Wendy Ornelas, architecture is about transformation. The two architects, who are married and are both associate professors of architecture, have designed two recent projects that have sought to transform existing buildings. One, the yet-to-be-opened Mexican-Carribean restaurant Coco Bolos, is in Aggieville on Bluemont Avenue. The other, a new Dara's Fast Lane outpost with an adjoining Taco Casa Mexican fast-food restaurant, is on the prominent corner of Fort Riley Boulevard and 17th Street. The Dara's project also included collaboration with fellow architect Torgeir Norheim, assistant professor of architecture. "Architecture, to some degree, has to transform you," Condia said. "That's why people go to restaurants - the sounds, flavors, smells, color and texture take you to somewhere else." Julie Haynes, who, with a partner, owns the building for Coco Bolos, told Condia and Ornelas her concept of the restaurant. The two architects made her ideas reality.

Concept:
The trailers are removed, and the Wellman Courtyard is transformed into a social place and sculpture garden, framed by a double arc of trees and the magnificent buildings of the Agriculture Complex.
While each new work of architecture should respond to its own time and place, it should also embody the grace, presence, and civic character of our historic structures. Campus buildings endure far longer than their initial contents, and should be designed to embody the spirit of the university, not merely the needs of current programs, nor ephemeral stylistic trends. They should have the quality, durability, and flexibility to serve the university well for generations.
Strategic Goals
Capital investment shall both preserve the campus' architectural legacy and improve the visual quality of the campus, by:
  • ensuring the design of each new and renovated building improves the image and experience of the campus as a whole.
  • ensuring each new and renovated building has the quality, durability and flexibility to serve the university for generations.
  • ensuring new buildings enhance the spatial and architectural integrity of the classical core.

The year 1998 will mark the centennial of the birth of Alvar Aalto, the renowned Finnsh architect and designer who died twenty years ago and is immortalized by the fifty-Finnmark bank note which bears his portrait and a picture of Finlandia Hall in Helsinki. Already, plans are underway for national and international events in observance of the centennial including exhibitions, conferences, publications (electronic and printed), a design competition and even building restorations. The considerable interest in Finland and abroad is indicative of Aalto's important historical position. In his lifetime he achieved international recognition, and his place in the pantheon of 20th-century modernists remains secure. If praise from members of one's profession is a measure of success, then Aalto scores high: Frank Lloyd Wright called him a genius after visiting the Finnish Pavilion at the 1939 New York World's Fair, and
