McGraw-Hill Education - Europe ISBN: 0070368317 Udo Kultermann's Contemporary Architecture in the Arab States couples case studies with over 100 never-before-seen illustrations to chronicle modern architectural developments in each Arab nation. From government offices and public spaces, to houses of education and religion, the featured examples include designs for both commercial and private clients. The book also explores the unlikely collaboration between large foreign architectural firms and their smaller, yet essential, Arab counterparts and highlights the cultural self-examination that occurs while redesigning ancient citiesto coincide with modern needs. In 1960 the Middle East was catapulted into energy leadership, resulting in unlimited resources and an added scope to their architecture. This text documents Middle Eastern architecture in this period, along with the challenges of extreme climate, and merging the modern with Islamic tradition. The Astrological Houses

Dividing the Mundane Circle First House Ascendant Second House ... Twelfth House
The houses show where an energy will manifest. A planet in the 10th house will be very different from one in the eighth. The houses anchor your chart, zeroing in on the place and moment of the chart, they make it individual to you. Houses are particularly important in traditional and horary astrology. William Lilly in his book "Christian Astrology" likens the astrologer who does not grasp the meaning of the houses as someone who has nowhere to put his various possessions. You need a time of birth to calculate the houses. Changing your location by more than a few thousand miles will give different houses for your new position. This is part of Relocation Astrology The houses are described by the movement due to the spinning of the earth i.e. the sun rises in the morning and sets in the evening. This motion is not due to the sun moving at all. It is called Diurnal Motion. There are two astronomical constants here - the point where the sun would rise i.e. where the ecliptic and the horizon cross and the point the Sun would reach at Noon, the highest point in the sky i.e. where the ecliptic and the observers meridian cross. The houses describe the arena of life where a planets energy will become manifest.

Arne Jacobsen, Elisabeth Buchwald Polfoto [top] As a young architect, Henning Larsen, b.1925, was an associate of Arne Jacobsen, but in the 1960s - after establishing his own firm - he gained a reputation through his successful participation in international architecture competitions. He won for instance the competition for a new university in the Norwegian city of Trondheim, the first stage of which was completed 1976-78. Henning Larsen's main work, however, is the Saudi Arabian Foreign Ministry in Riyadh (1982-84), a monumental, fortress-like building in which Islamic and European building traditions are elegantly combined. The varies spaces in the building and the exciting use of light are characteristic of Henning Larsen's architecture, as are the covered "bazaar streets" and "squares" on several floors, themes found again in several of his other works, including the School of Economics and Business Administration in Frederiksberg (1988-89) and the central library in Gentofte (1984-85) to the north of Copenhagen. Less than three hours from Prague, the capital of the province of Moravia offers much of interest and everything costs less than in Prague. The old town center has many classic Renaissance and Baroque houses and palaces. Brno is also a convenient center for exploring the many lovely towns and castles of Moravia and the rolling mountains to the north and east. The old center is best explored on foot. Start your walk at the Old Town Hall, which houses the Tourist Information Center. Its tower dominates the square. The carved doorway contains many strange looking figures, but its most famous feature is the crooked central pinnacle. The story has it that the carver deliberately made it crooked out of spite for not being paid the agreed sum for his work. Inside the hall there are several other strange objects, including a stuffed dragon. Cross Zelny trh (Cabbage Market) square, passing the vegetable and fruit stands, and go up Petrov Hill to the

Department of Architecture Pritzker Prize Rem Koolhaas, a 56 year old architect from the Netherlands, has been named the Pritzker Architecture Prize Laureate for the year 2000. In Europe, he has a number of completed projects that have won high praise from critics, including a residence in Bordeaux, France; the Educatorium , a multifunction building for Utrecht University in the Netherlands; the master plan and Grand Palais for Lille, France which is his largest realized urban planning project; and the Kunsthal, providing exhibition space, a restaurant and auditoriums in Rotterdam. His Nexus Housing in Fukuoka, Japan, is a project consisting of 24 individual houses, each three stories high. Koolhaas also has projects in Portugal, Korea and Germany, the latter being a new embassy for the Netherlands in Berlin, which is currently under construction. He has a number of major commissions in the United States that will come to fruition within the next two years: a student center for the predominantly Mies van der Rohe campus of the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, and a new central public library for Seattle, as well as buildings in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Koolhaas has also been working for Universal Studios, owned by the Seagram Company, on a master plan and headquarters buildings.

By the mid-nineteenth century, the distinctions between specific Victorian revivals dissolved as visual appeal assumed even greater importance than it had in the preceding decades. The architectural tendency of this period was characterized by an indiscriminate mixing of various ornamental motifs and styles. The attraction of picturesque architecture was that no one group was privileged in understanding the whole of its composite parts. Victorian buildings often consisted of whichever components the architect happened to include in his design. While this practice may be seen as egalitarian, it must not be forgotten that the gap between the wealthy and the poor was growing steadily larger during this time period.
