INTERDISCIPLINARY PROGRAMS AND CENTERS

Architecture and planning professionals have long been concerned with the connections between the built and natural environments. Recently, however, the need to integrate a sensitivity to the natural environment into decisions about the design and development of buildings, communities, and regions has taken on critical importance. The School of Architecture and Planning reflects this imperative with major formal offerings in several environmental areas. Environmental elements are included in many other subjects as well.
Department of Architecture The Architecture Department is concerned with the built environment in its cultural, social, and technical contexts. It is now focused as well on the built environment as it relates to sustainability. This means emphasizing the links between built forms and the natural environment in a manner respectful of the need to promote sustainable development. The Department's degree programs encourage study and research on sustainability issues across discipline groups and programs. Environmentally oriented issues are pursued in classes, seminars, workshops and research. They are also a focus in the Department's design studios.

Music Performing arts Film ... Links Architecture in Sweden 1995-99 "Sweden builds - 1995-99" is an exhibition showing the highlights of Swedish architecture and building over the last five years. Current architectural works are presented with the help of photographs, sketches, drawings and models. The Swedish Museum of Architecture in consultation with the architectural journal Arkitektur Förlag, are responsible for production.
The contents of the exhibition are based on the guide-book "Architecture in Sweden" written by Claes Caldenby and Olof Hultin. The book presents 115 edifices built during the period.
The exhibition shows high-quality Swedish architecture and contributes to the discussion on quality in building. The selection has been made with geographic distribution throughout the country and buildings for different purposes in mind. The emphasis is on large official buildings such as museums, cultural institutes and schools. Two buildings constructed outside Sweden are also depicted in the exhibition - the Ambassador's residence and new embassy in Berlin.
Other projects in the exhibition include AstraZeneca's industrial plant in Mölndal by Gert Wingårdh, Aula Magna at Stockholm University by Ralph Erskine, the Art gallery at Millesgården by Johan Celsing, the Modern Museum and Museum of Architecture by Rafael Moneo.
