Campus Menu : Profile Courses Offered Admissions Resources Insider's View During the 1930s, there were only five architects engaged in private practice in New Delhi. Most of the others worked for the government, and the profession was still in its infancy in northern India. That doesn't mean that architecture in India didn't exist ! It did, on a scale that can be seen throughout the country. But as a profession, architecture had not yet taken off. At this time, the only two existing schools of architecture in India were in Mumbai and Baroda. With World War II came a sudden demand for architects in the Allied forces, and a Britisher called Walter George established a training institute for architects. The Department of Architecture, as it was known, came into existence as a part of the Delhi Polytechnic at Kashmere Gate in 1942. The first batch of architects received their diplomas in 1950. Today, the

In large part they were natives of the region, often teen-aged girls away from home for the first time. Teaching under difficult circumstances, school women struggled to meet their students' needs and also used all the means at their disposal—summer institutes, normal schools, and even programs by mail—to upgrade their own educational credentials. The 53 reception attendees, including 37 patrons, celebrated having found patrons for 47 of the 96 inner city schools in the archdiocese. Archbishop Egan also challenged those present to help to raise that number in the next year.

We plan to offer sessions in the special track looking at international education in its wider social context: at ways in which it influences, and is in turn influenced by, broader currents in the surrounding community and in society at large. For example: How can the internationalisation of education both draw on, and contribute to, activities in the immediate environment of universities such as the work of schools, businesses, community organisations?
