Tammy Hilaris The Daily Illini Miguel Manero, 9, plays with a drum during Argentina Night at La Casa Cultural Latina on Monday night. He came to the U.S from Peru three months ago with his family. It takes two to tango.
La Casa Cultural Latina coupled with Comunidad Argentina to host Argentina Night, an evening devoted to the culture and life in Argentina. The event was organized by Comunidad Argentina, a student organization devoted to providing support to Argentinian students new to the University or to America.
"The object of Argentina Night is to show the culture of Argentina to the University community," said Pedro Elosegui, president of Comunidad Argentina. "This is the second time we've held this event with support from La Casa. They provide the location and financial support."
Comunidad Argentina was founded in 1999. In addition to being a support system for assimilating Argentinian students, the group organizes academic, athletic, cultural and social activities in the area, which allow a cross-cultural exchange between Argentinians and members of the community. The organization consists of about 70 students.

Flag of Argentina Background:
Following independence from Spain in 1816, Argentina experienced periods of internal political conflict between conservatives and liberals and between civilian and military factions.
After World War II, a long period of Peronist authoritarian rule and interference in subsequent governments was followed by a military junta that took power in 1976.
Democracy returned in 1983, and numerous elections since then have underscored Argentina's progress in democratic consolidation.

Travel Center Country Guide: ARGENTINA Business Culture Greetings and Courtesies Decision Making Women Meetings ... Business Attire GREETINGS AND COURTESIES Argentine values emphasize the importance of personal relationships, and Argentines take time and effort to establish a personal relationship as a prerequisite to a business relationship. Individuality and candor are considered important, as are tact and diplomacy. Argentines are generally reserved and avoid calling attention to themselves. Conservative family and religious values are important guides to personal and professional behavior. Argentines also consider it a matter of pride to know the correct response, which can lead to misunderstandings when they do not in fact have a firm answer. They have a stronger work ethic than what is found in many other Latin American societies and are highly competitive. Nevertheless, they view work as a single component of life rather than the central focus. DECISION MAKING Although middle level managers may be responsible for implementing decisions, actual decisions are almost always made at a high level of authority. Argentines will want to know your standing within the hierarchy and will wish to match you with someone of similar rank, although only their senior people will actually be able to approve agreements. Nevertheless, it is important to cultivate personal relationships with employees at all levels, because the quality of these relationships may strongly influence the actual decision maker even when your immediate counterpart is not the one making the decision.
