Current Archaeological Projects at ASM ASM pix 1468-x-7 Homol'ovi Research Program This program has been active since 1984-85, under the direction of Dr. E. Charles (Chuck) Adams. Research is focused on several ancestral Hopi pueblos (villages) near Winslow in northeastern Arizona. The research studies the processes of aggregation in the late prehistory (that is, the formation of large communities) and contributes to the interpretive programs at the Homolovi Ruins State Park. see Map 1 Preliminary work done in the summer of 2002 discovered an unusual layout of the village (a semi-circular roomblock arrangement of the highest part of the site see Map 2 ), established the basic framework of the grid system, and noted a large number of areas throughout the pueblo with intense burning. Intensive excavations will begin in various structures in the semi-circular roomblock. The project usually conducts field work during June and July each year; relying on the participation of volunteers. The remainder of the year is spent in analyzing and summarizing the materials recovered. Graduate and undergraduate students participate in the field and laboratory aspects of the project; some paid student-positions are available each year. What Can State Cut? by Barrett Marson December 8, 2002 Ideas are Pouring In School funding no longer taboo PHOENIX - Several groups and key individuals have lined up with suggestions about how to whack a few bucks here and a few bucks there from the state budget. State leaders face a real budget shortfall of about $1 billion as the Legislature and Gov.-elect Janet Napolitano get ready to tackle the budget in January. And much of the shortfall is likely to be made up from cuts to an already slim-downed budget. Suggestions range from the politically popular, the Governor's Office for Excellence in Government, to the near impossible, such as a substantial cut to the state's three universities. "This thing is going to be solved $1 at a time," said Kevin McCarthy, director of the Arizona Tax Research Association. "We've got to get down into the details of the budget." Napolitano will undertake a review of departments as she plans a budget for the next fiscal year. In an interview Friday, she had few details but will need to propose a budget come January after she takes office.

Through the NSF grants, scientists may soon have answers to such questions as: Is an urban existence good for wildlife? What is "natural"? And do ecological relationships operate in as complex a manner in urban landscapes as in so-called pristine settings? The awards will involve research on urban environments in the cities of Phoenix, Arizona, and Baltimore, Maryland, through NSF's Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) program.
