Web site and ideas are great! I can't wait to use the plans this fall. Just wondering if you have any suggestions for a good place to find resources for the mapping exercises...I was under the impression you had the students physically identify and label each location. I have had a difficult time finding good blank maps for the students to do their work on. Also the mapping exercise of Rome. Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks again " a new and eager" world history/geography teacher 7/29/02 studentsfriend.com reply

Beyond Geography: Mapping Unknowns of Cyberspace
Mapmakers Stretch the Definition of Cartography to Help Visualize the Web By PAMELA LICALZI O'CONNELL he mapping of that vast territory known as cyberspace has begun in earnest.
University of Arizona A multilayered map of the space represented by 100,000 entertainment-related Web addresses. Cyberspace maps are being produced by geographers, cartographers, artists and computer scientists. They range from glorious depictions of globe-spanning communications networks to maps of Web information. Many have no geographic references, instead turning to nature, the cosmos or neuroscience for spatial models. They stretch the definition of a map in their effort to capture, sometimes fancifully, what is sometimes referred to as the "common mental geography" that lies beyond computer screens. The maps hold the potential to change, subtly or perhaps more directly, the relationship of the average person to cyberspace, the world of electronic communication that includes but is not limited to the Internet. How people envision the online landscape influences their behavior there, experts say. "We need maps not just to navigate but to define and control new territory," said Martin Dodge, a researcher in the Center for Advanced Spatial Analysis at University College London. "Simply having a map allows a new perspective, a new way to orient yourself.

Setting Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument extends from the town of Boulder in south-central Utah, along the foothills of the Boulder Mountains, 60 miles to the Arizona border and the town of Big Water on U.S. 89. At its widest point, it is nearly 90 miles from Capitol Reef on the northeast boundary to Johnson Canyon near Kanab on the southwest edge. The Monument encompasses the Grand Staircase in its western portion, the Kaiparowits Plateau in the eastern ,with the Canyons of the Escalante sandwiched between. Much of the Escalante River and many of its side canyons are already within the Glen Canyon NRA, so virtually the entire stream is now set aside. There are about 2,656 square miles in the Monument, equivalent to a square 52 miles long by 52 miles wide. The monument is 900,000 acres larger than the total acreage of Utah's five existing national parks. It contains more land than all of the national parks in Utah, Colorado, Nevada and Wyoming (except Yellowstone) combined. The monument abuts the Glen Canyon National Recreation area (1,236,880 acres) on the east and south, and Capitol Reef National Park (241,904 acres) on the northeast and Bryce Canyon National Park (35,835 acres) along the western edge.
